People were all upset when Ty’s redshirt was announced. I remember posting after the EIU game that it was clear that we needed shooters for this year to be successful in the system we were going to run.

White’s shot looked great early. We were told Ben and Jake were pure shooters etc. we were told Booth would be a good player.

Made sense that Ty didn’t fit the style we’d play.

And now here we are.

Ben’s issues are obvious and have been discussed ad nauseam. Jake has made some shots and hustle plays, but his defense and athleticism is not going to cause a B1G team too many issues, Tre has been benched and Booth has been a complete zero.

We definitely needed guys like Ty, Buck, and Dainja last night.
Hansberry as well.

A big shortfall right now i believe are leaders for a young team...and coaching/ game mgmt. I really believed Boswell was going to be our Alpha leader....not yet.

I listened to the MSU postgame and was frustrated that it appears that KJ was taking most of the heat for not trying to break score drought by penetrating more in last 8 min of MSU.

As KJ was apologizing... I was thinking to myself "where were the coaches to call a timeout and reset tactics and break momentum"?

I'm afraid unless we are red hot we will have another L in Madison the way they are playing and our downtrend.

Do you really think that this wasn't happening during the timeouts? You think that Brad was saying, yeah guys.....just keep firing up threes? Of course not. That's venom coming from the fans. KJ is supposed to be a lottery pick. You don't think that he should have been in complete control of this? He should have had 30 points, 15 coming from the stripe. When do the players carry ANY responsibility?

This isn't junior high ball. This is just common sense. You have to shoot the open threes. You have to. That said, Tomi and KJ should have been living at the line.

If morez transfers that’s all we need to know about the state of this program
I'm not sure that Morez tells us that. Remember this board and others not wanting Illinois to give in to the demands of TA. And so Illinois did not give in. Now we have on the open market a coach and two of our players. It's a whole new world of free agency and NIL. $$$ rule

He committed as a high school sophomore to play at his dream school not about $$ if he leaves

This! From my very amateurish view, it looked like MSU was committed to not having KJ beat them and having their big guys deny anything in the paint by Morez or Tomi. Tomi wasn't himself after the tripping foul and couldn't make them pay for that. Will going out really hurt. There needed to be some adjustment at the coaching level to relieve some of the pressure on a freshmen guard. It never really came.

IFund and NIL donors should be allowed to vote on coaching staffs at the end of the year. With the possibility of a zero confidence vote mid season. The results of the vote still defer to Josh, but at least he knows for sure what his money available is wanting. This should be scaled based on contributions. Votes should include something to the effect of: retention, bonus, contract restructure, termination.

In retrospect I wonder if the same type of thing happened to Podz after the northwestern game. He thinks a solid game with a clutch shot earns him minutes. Brad sets him straight.

Mrs 2qtslow states:

The modern game is all about the mental health of the players. Brad is not good at this. They are children, albeit large ones.

Looking back, the way we played against Oregon was fools gold. It was early enough in the season to totally push expectations well above where they probably should go with a performance that just can’t be repeated in a reliable way.

We had disappointing losses this season but let’s take a look

2 loses against MSU who is a top 20 team.
Lost to Nebraska on the road who is a bubble team tough to beat on the road
Lost to MD who has been playing very well and is a top 25 team

Lost to USC which was a game they took advantage of mismatch

Only two loses that were bad was RU and NW

Our execution was bad in our loses but we still have a good resume

Jfc...it's not about you as a person Ben.

It's about a coach/staff that continues to try and break down a brick wall with their heads.

Three point shooting being the brick wall, and you as their head.

This just in:
It. Isn't. Working.

Haven’t posted in a while but this season has been maddening. Just a huge miss from Brad and Co this season with the roster construction. And to rehash what has been said before, some overall questionable decisions in the program. Letting Frazier and TA go seems a lot more worrisome than it did at the time. If TA wanted money and we didn’t have it fine, but Chester was an all time Illini that gave his heart and sole to the program. We recruited over most of his guys because they were limited offensively. Kind of funny when you think about how bad we’ve been shooting the ball this year. At least they had that dawg in them. I’ll admit the offensive talent is there but the execution and coaching is lacking. We’re a young team so bumps are somewhat expected but if we get 3 guys returning next year that young talent doesn’t mean much. Have to hope we can get hot shooting the ball down the stretch because that seems like our only hope of making a run.
I agree. Losing Chet and TA was problematic...and it was telling. Brad is interested in Tyler. There, I said it.

At least Ben has tried to change his game some and been somewhat effective in limited work in booty ball and going to the rim. His rebounding and overall energy and effort are up. His bad shooting is a symptom of the overall problem.

He's at least trying to evolve. Can't say that about his coach. Also, I made this video into gif for all to use when we shoot our 30th three of the game.

Today's (Feb.17} NET rankings. Wisconsin no. 12, Purdue 13, Maryland 14, Illinois 18, Michigan 19, Mich. State 21. Not a single B1G team in the top 10.

I don't know where I should post this, but Illini women's team is 21-5 and on an 8-game win streak. Let's hope they finally get ranked. I watched their highlights from the recent win over Nebraska. The crowd looked decent sized, but I was hoping for a little bigger. Keep winning like this, and crowds will grow.

I don't know where to post this either, but the Illinois Wesleyan women's team is 22-1, 13-1 in conference, and after blowing out Millikin on Saturday, they clinched a share of the conference title. They are really fun to watch. Mallory Powers, a sr. guard, was 6 of 9 from deep. The team plays North Central on Wed. nite and can clinch the conference title outright with a win. I encourage anybody to watch them play by going to the official website and click on the "watch" option for live streaming.

There's been a definite upturn in Illini basketball since BU took over but he just seems to have huge blind spots. MSU was just begging to have zone played against them but he can't seem to bring himself to be that flexible. Great coaches always seem to come up with wonderful out-of-bounds plays but he never does. And his "we're going to keep doing what we do no matter how many shots he blocks" has got to be among the most foolish words that a coach has ever spoken.
He seems to be a great motivator and knows how to attract talent but he just doesn't have much coaching talent himself.
