Morez on this team immediately elevates us to a final four contender. I mean basically a guy who averages a double double per 25 minutes.

What's tough about the Ty injury is that I talked myself into the "if Morez was here, Ty wouldn't be" idea (which is probably true). But turns out we won't get Ty anyways.
Crazy part is this isn't even a hyperbole. He played 17.7 minutes last year averaging 7.0 points and 6.7 rebounds. Per 25 minutes (so basically if he played the exact same amount as Ben) that rounds out to 9.9 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Factor in the year to year development... almost a certainty he would've averaged a double-double this coming season (if he played 25).

I think he could've gotten much closer to that mark this year tbh. I know everyone will point to the fouls....there were quite a few games of his playing where he played under 20, sometimes under 15 with only or less than 3 fouls (especially early on).

Look at Northwestern for instance: 12 minutes, 2 fouls, 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3-4 FG.

Compare that with Humrichous: 39 minutes (most of any Illini), 3 fouls, 3 points, 5 rebounds, 1-9 from three, and some pretty brutal moments defensively.

Panagiotis Pagonic, 6'9", 205-pound PF from Greece: a SHOOTER! But is another PF a real "need" for the Illini? Could he play right away and guard quick, athletic 4s? We seem to be short on wings/guards, especially if Petrovic has eligibility problems and/or visa issues.
Our depth chart up front is fine. Mirko, Toni, Z, and then a bulked up Ben H slotting in as well. We have no depth at all in our backcourt. We need a guard/sf. We don't need a power forward.

Thanks for mentioning Ali Dibba. I just mentioned him a couple of days ago on this site... but no one responded. Dibba had good numbers at SIU this past season. I think he could fill a need on the Illini roster for 2025-2026.
Indy? Are we at least glancing in Ali Dibba's direction? It seems he would fill in our most pressing need perfectly.

Geophilos Alexandros

I feel like his name needs to be in italics:

“On the far side of the court, Geophilos Alexandros, better known as The Eastern European Bucket Getter, cautiously waits for his defender to approach, instinctively knowing that he can snake his way past the slow-footed biped for an easy basket.”

That game was malpractice.

Starters should have been: KJ, Boswell, Will, Morez, Tomi. Tre as the first man off the bench and then Ben. That's a really talented team.

What it was: KJ, Boswell, Tre, Ben, Tomi with Will as the first off the bench and then Morez.

I think towards the end it was better, but overall, especially to start, the minutes/starting lineup were handled very strangely (at least in terms of weighing production/PT).

Close games last year were not our thing. We either blew the crap out of teams, or got shellacked ourselves.

Illinois only had three "close" losses last season: @MSU, @NW, @NEB.

By no means was MSU a great game for him, but the two really brutal outings for Ben was NW and NEB: in those two games he shot a combined 0-16 from 3, and played 39 and 24 minutes respectively.

Had those two games not happened I do not think we're talking about Ben the way we are, but they did, and were very detremental losses in our resume.

And before there was a 3 point line. Probably best pure shooter I ever saw in college.
Rick Mount still holds the Big Ten single game scoring record of 61 points against Iowa (the Big Ten Champions) in 1970 on 27 for 47 from the field and that was without a 3 point line. An analysis of the game film shows that it would have been 74 points IF there was a 3 point line. He was the first high school basketball player ever to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He led Purdue to the National Championship game which they lost to UCLA, led by Lew Alcindor a/k/a Kareem Abdul-Jabar at a time when no one could beat UCLA. If Rick Mount was not the greatest pure shooter in the history of the Big Ten, then he at least has to be on the short list of who was. If you didn't guard him once he was past half court, he'd let it fly and you'd regret it. Simply amazing.

Rick Mount was a peer of mine and vividly remembered. We Illinois hoopsters always described our Indiana counterparts as great shooters....while we were great makers...but it was said with a deeply hidden nod of respect. Mount was maybe the best maker I ever saw play and simply seldom, if ever, had a bad night. You could say he never took a bad shot, but he could make any shot he took at a high percentage. He always shot a jumper but had a variety of shots inside 12 ft.

Pistol Pete was only a step behind, but on occasion Maravich would take a shot he could not make and everyone knew it...except him. Sometimes, he even made those. But no one has ever had and maybe never will have an offensive game comparable to "The Pistol". But I learned a long time ago to never say never. (Note the maybe).

Keaton Wagler and Bradon Lee might just be good guards - offensively and defensively.

Let's give them a chance to prove it.
Agree 100%. All that is needed is for them to take care of the ball, defend, and use whatever offensive skills they have to score when the opportunity arises. No one needs them to be Allen Iverson or SAG. Awaiting the chance to observe their play, I hold hope that they can both surprise all the doubting Thomases. Time will tell, but we have to remember that wherever and whenever players play the game, the hoops are 10 ft., the ball is the same size, and the rules are pretty much the same. A lot of what they can contribute will be from between their ears and in their heart.

Does he have any eligibility? He would need to get a waiver.

He played a year at Chicago State, two years at Abilene Christian, and a year at SIU.

He only played 5 games for Chicago State(in December and January) before missing the rest of the season with a hand injury. He also missed the early season due to travel restrictions in Sweden.

To me it seems like he should be eligible for an injury redshirt but I'd assume he would've already signed somewhere if that was the case. He was an all WAC and all MVC selection in back to back years so you think he would have plenty of offers.

I’ll confirm once again …

The expectation is that Ty will miss the entire season …

The media will continue to ask Brad about this … Brad will continue to dodge the question about injury specifics and timeline until all parties agree it’s time to share …

Those were your two highest paid players on the roster last year … We don’t have “big splash” money left in the bank and there isn’t a “big splash” guy left out there either honestly … But the staff is very active … We didn’t just send Geoff to Greece to look at future prospects …
Well, well, well . . . I just happen to be in Greece this coming week. Let Geoff know I'm available to help out any way I can.

BTW, I'm in Scotland this week. Did you know that have whisky distilleries here? Hundreds of them! I'm visiting two a day for the rest of this week, I might need help drinking some of this stuff when I get home . . .

I hear there might be a golf course or two also...

Yes, and I hear some are quite nice. But because of the follow on trip to Greece (including taking ferries to/from the islands) I elected not to bring the sticks this time, and will do only golf and whisky next trip 😉

that's very true , but Mount would hang a 40 + pt or more game regularly........
Rick Mount is probably the greatest college shooter in history. The only player I have seen in his league is Steph Curry.

Rick Mount was not athletic, slow, and small (listed as 6’1” - I met him several times more like 5’ 10”. We had a player named Rick Howett who was a very good shooter and would get us like 18-20 per game, problem was Mount would score 40+ against us. Remember he did that WITHOUT a three point line.

Or, if we have the chance, let's bring in another solid veteran guard/sf so that if Keaton and Brandon aren't ready to contribute right away, our team is still set up for success. If Brandon and Keaton are good enough, they will still have plenty of opportunities to play.
