Looking at non conference and Conference. Good vibes 22-9 and mediocre or no defense vibes 19-12. Not enough was done in addressing defense with new hire and Hamer still on bench. Still wish Little Underwood would seek to cut his coaching chops elsewhere. Need older, experienced, recruiting stud coaching. Money is there in buckets.
Let's go men, shock me on defense!

Really looking forward to this year. Can’t say I love how banged up we are before the season has started. Love the roster and personality/playing types of this team. Seems like a lot of guys who just refuse to lose.

This reinforces for me that Maryland has been our kryptonite. I hate them SO MUCH.

Isn't Iowa State the obvious pick for 23-24? That game cemented us as a legit good program rather than chokers who drew Duquesne and Morehead State.

Also, yes, I would choose the collapse at PSU as worst that year, but then I go absolutely feral when we lose to Penn State. (I got suspended from this board following the Big Ten Tournament loss.) I still haven't forgiven them for ruining the Flyin' Illini reunion in 2019.
RE: Iowa State win, I purposely limited myself to regular season games. 😎

Looks like other than Ty we should be heeled soon!
Also looks like we have added depth from Lee and Wags! Kind of a nice bonus🙂

To any of the insiders or guys who have seen these guys up and close….

Are we going to be able to defend a lick? I think statistically this team can be like an Alabama type. Top 5 offense nationally, 50-70ish on defense. Probably win a ton of games and be fun to watch but when we need stops, will we get them?
I think our defense will be in the 30s, it should be improved from last year.

I fully expect a top 5 offense.

This will be the question of the season and will determine how far we can go.

It will also clear Hamer as the scapegoat of past year if we struggle. Players gotta play.

Can someone explain why these are considered sell outs when there are still public tickets available through the Illinois ticket office website that are not resale? Is it that there are only single seats left and no pairs, so they just call it a sell out?
It says only Michigan and Indiana are sellouts. They sold all the season tickets and student tickets. But they still hold back single game tickets.

Our 2023 season was I believe #2 offensively & hovering around 100 on the defensive end and that team got to an elite 8 and was a top 10 team when everyone was on the floor.

Do you see an offense that is truly as elite as that team? A legitimate top 5 offense and a top 40 defense would have us in contention for a Final 4.

Thinking of Duke last year and, in football, Indiana and Washington this year. No defense means NO room for turnovers… haven’t seen him play, but is Wagler really solid with the ball? The way Mahalo plays (fast and loose) reminds me of K last year- easy to knock the ball away from. Kylan has been OK but not great- we ended up having Riley bring the ball up end of last year- maybe Mirk is that guy this year. If Florida put up 96 without Boogie then I’m thinking limiting turnovers will be so key.

Me too. I see Petro as the final piece of an elite puzzle. Get him completely healthy, along with Tomi and AS as well and you could have a fully balanced, lethal starting five. I hope Petro has a great season and loves the Illini experience; nowadays I find the need to temper my exuberance due to the $$ factor. The NBA and the transfer portal are always lurking around the edges.

I couldn't imagine why this team is not top 5 good. With Petrovic (healthy) we've got all the boxes checked.

Re: defense. Frontcourt / post defense is probably going to be bad. Let’s just accept that — when you roll out a lineup of 7 footers who can pass, dribble, and shoot, there’s going to be some puts and takes. We should fully expect Interior defense and physicality to be a weakness, offset by what TI, ZI, BH, and DM can do on the offensive end.

Now, guard / wing defense is really where I think our season is defined. KJ and WR were respectfully not Big Ten ready defenders. I expect Andrej to be solid guarding the wing, and Keaton Wagler’s size and length alone makes me believe he can be at least average for a freshman. No Ty hurts, but IMO, the difference in whether this defense ranks in the 30’s or 80’s come March really depends on how well we can defend positions 1-3.

I haven't followed the off-season improvements of any of the players. But for the Illini to be top 5, or even top 10, Tomi is going to have to be a lot more physical than he was last year.
