I have to say, since the Underwood rebuild got off the ground in the 2019-20 season, there have been a few different "turning point moments" where I either began to really think that team had the potential for a deep NCAAT run or sort of lost hope and/or adjusted my expectations down to reality, realizing our ceiling was lower than I thought. I truly try not to overreact TOO much over one single game, but some examples include...

1. Kofi blocking Garza at the buzzer to beat Iowa to end 2020, earning a double bye for the BTT that was not to be. We had an up-and-down season with some big wins, but we had gone through so many years of sucking that it was going to take a while to truly buy into us being "back." For so many reasons, this was a true statement win that we were a serious, nationally relevant program that was here to stay. I would have loved to see that team get a shot in the NCAA Tournament.

2. Winning the 2021 regular season finale at #7 Ohio State (the Ayo mask game) to cap off a streak of winning 11 out of 12 and leaving zero doubt whatsoever that we would get a #1 seed. Some folks might choose the beatdown of #2 Michigan without Ayo, but given all of the animosity between us and Michigan, it was clear we were geared up for that game and had something to prove. To then go get another top 10 road victory four days later combined with the WAY we grinded out that game left no doubt in my mind that we had the tools to win it all ... sigh.

3. The 2022 BTT loss to Indiana sort of made me at peace with the fact that this team might not be built for a deep run. I LOVED this team, and I guess I always held on to this belief that if we could hit our threes and our opponent couldn't triple team Kofi ... how exactly could you beat us?? However, something about this loss just sort of solidified my belief that this was indeed a good team but one that might be unlikely to go too far in March Madness ... which is fine, because they gave us our first regular season banner in 17 years!

4. This one is a two-fer, lol. After the 2023 team beat #2 Texas at MSG, I genuinely thought we had all of the pieces for a deep Tourney run ... it seems crazy to remember now given how this team performed down the stretch, but we showed SUCH grit in refusing to lose that game, and it just seemed like we had so many weapons. As the season went on, even dud losses to PSU at home or at Northwestern didn't truly dilute my hope ... it was the February 26 loss to OSU that solidified to me that this team just didn't have "it." We looked so lethargic. By the time we were losing to PSU for a third time in the BTT or Arkansas in the NCAAT, I had nothing but a passive hope we'd get lucky in some postseason games.

5. Shocking to many, I'm sure, but I'm skipping 2024 ... I loved that team, but there was never a moment where I was like "Oh crap, we might be legit!" or "Well, maybe we aren't as good as I thought." They were just steadily good all year, even through ups and downs, and I always thought we had Sweet Sixteen-ish potential. Getting that ISU victory to go to the Elite Eight felt like the epitome of "icing on the cake" for that season.

6. Another two-fer! Even though we already had THREE ranked wins by this point (including the UTTER beatdown of #9 Oregon on the road), it was actually the 91-52 annihilation of Penn State at home in 2025 that got me thinking we were an actual Final Four threat. We had just come back from a 2-0 West Coast road trip, and for us to just take care of business so methodically vs. an inferior opponent without any unnecessary drama felt like such a breath of fresh air that was all too rare even in some of our previous successful seasons. I retained MOST of this optimism even through the USC dud home loss (crazy stuff happens!) and the humiliation vs. Maryland at home (they have dark magic over us, after all), but it was the OT loss at Nebraska where I sort of gave up on the idea that this team could ever be consistent (or tough) enough to put together a Second Weekend NCAAT run ... we looked like we didn't want to be there, and no win after that TRULY 100% ever restored my confidence.

TL;DR

If you read through all of that, you will see that there have been a few "light bulb moments" for me over the last couple of years where I either (A) seemed to suddenly realize how high our ceiling was or (B) come crashing back down to Earth and accept that this was simply not "the year." I can honestly say, through all of the highs and lows, last night's gutsy win vs. #11 Texas Tech without key pieces and making ZERO threes in the second half might have me feeling the most "high" on a team since the 2021 team was tearing it up down the stretch. It was a statement that this team wasn't just good or talented or "high potential" or whatever ... we showed that we were complete and, more importantly, TOUGH.

Knock on wood, but I think this could be a special year.

Going into the year, I thought Tomi and maybe Kylan would battle it out for best player on the team.

Then we had Mirk Mania.

Now Andrej.

Four dudes who, at different times, have looked like the best player on the court.

And that doesn't even include Wagler who is averaging a quiet 17 and 7 right now.

I don't expect or even want Andrej scoring 20 a night. But the one thing that had kept me from fully indulging in Natty dreams, is that I didn't see a player on our team who I trusted to just go get us one when we really needed it. Now with Andrej, we have that.

Maybe defense is still a question mark? We did enough to beat a top 10 to 20 offense on Tuesday but I'm still a bit skeptical that our defense will finish in the top 15.

Either way, I think this is the most complete team (or at least most balanced) we've had since 2005. Maybe 2021. But that team was very reliant on the two man game with Trent being the only other player who averaged double figures. 2024 had a super suspect defense.

I look at the field and I don't see a 2024 UConn or even a 2024 Purdue.

I think we have a real chance to do something with this team and I don't even think it's the Kool Aid talking.

There has been so many seasons where I thought we had the goods to make a deep tourney run that evaporated up in smoke , notably the Loyola loss that tempered my excitement going forward in subsequent seasons , but...................................................last nights victory has stirred that excitement back in my feeble mind.......it really really has........

to actually understand how many players we have had unavailable this season boggles my mind and so many past seasons we would have folded up like a wadded up piece of paper in file 13.......but NOT this season......NOT this team.......are we playing with fool's gold ??..............my answer is a resounding NO.................I believe we will see 24 carat gold with our collection of high skill level players on this years roster.............we have depth at every position on the court................we have a bonified defensive coach who so far seems like A MAJOR UPGRADE.........

I know it's only 3 games into the season but the vibes I am already feeling seem to run deeper than previous seasons in comparison...........last night was remarkable in the fact that the beloved were being challenged by a higher ranked opponent in a stretch of 12 consecutive FG's made erasing our 13 point lead.........

how did we react ?.............there was no head hanging , no looks of defeatism , nothing but a firm resolve to continue to compete at our " every day guys " motto and do whatever it was going to take to finish out the game on a winning note......

this is , IMHO , the most mature collection of players we have had under BU............Quirky yes for sure , but dedicated to the task at hand and that is to do whatever is needed to claim the victory........

some here may think it's too early for me to make such bold presumptions of this roster , but something is different in my mind about this years squad.......I have lived through so many disappointing seasons but it just feels different to me this year........

time for another woke & toke to settle my excitement from going nuclear............it really really is.............

BTW , if you have the time , listen to as many podcast's as you can and get what I've been hearing about the Illini's ceiling...hope it brings as big of a smile to you as it did to me................

I forgot to point out our second half of no 3 pt FG's made..............that just seems unreal especially considering how BU wants his teams shooting 3's........it was a second half of lunch pail players doing the right things to get the win...........

major adjustments , especially putting Bam on Toppin that made a big difference in the outcome of this game..............

Can I be honest here? And I hate to even admit this...

Maybe I'm wrong - somebody help me out if so...

Maybe some will actually agree...

BUT, I have yet to see the "loose cannon" personality and mean-streak from Mirkovic that we all heard about this summer that a majority of us were hoping for just to add some humor to this team.

I just haven't seen it yet (sadly?). I was hoping for some more outlandish (yet controllable) wildcard behavior. Love his tenacity and versatility! If Fletch can add some shiftiness to his game... the NBA will definitely come calling!

Have to say that the Texas win was great, but you could see the writing on the wall if you looked at Skyy on the bench at the end of the game. Obvious that there was trouble in paradise. It also took Mayer being unconscious shooting threes to claw that one out. Same for the UCLA game. Took TSJ unconscious shooting from three to win that one. We won those but it was through a punchers chance - we got lucky with some great play at the right time to do so. Last night was not our best game where we got on a streak from three (like Oregon last year as well). Last night was won by taking what we were given. Totally a different thing. But I agree that this team has to show it can continue playing together and continue to make shots, but I think we are, to quote Mirk, "built for big games."
Our previous teams would struggle when tough opponents would take away our main actions and/or we got cold from deep. First half we were getting and burying open shots off our initial pick n roll/dribble hand off actions which then led to easy dribble drive/drive kick counters that led to easy buckets/open shots. TT turned that off coming out of half and we got cold shooting from more contested looks then they punched us in the mouth not missing a shot. Being able to shift to gut out free throw attempts to keep lead with Kylen,Keaton, Andre until we figured out best way to match up hunt/iso attack to score is not something we were very capable of in the past. If this is something we can continue to do and be able to pivot between offensive strategies until things open up the sky is the limit.

Well when the buzzer sounded he ran straight into the crowd 🤣

Ben & Kylan had to go grab him

Through a handful of games I have seen Mirkovic toss the ball 30 feet into the air multiple times and run into the crowd. He's crazy in the best way

How have I missed this..lmaooo I love it. At the end of the day, sports are a spectacle and athletes are performers for our entertainment. Some guys absolutely get it (CoHawk), some don't, and some are too much of a competitor to care (TSJ & Ayo). And, then there are some who are just wired a lil different (Mirk & Giorgi) and just let their emotions take control. There is definitely room for all arcs!

But for my personal preference and taste, you cant beat a good Heel like Coleman Hawkins... unless they aren't on your team......

The tickets are wildly overpriced for a Weds night game with an 8pm tipoff during a non holiday week.
These tickets are priced considerably lower than the tickets for the mid-week Texas Tech game in Champaign. Many balcony tickets priced under $40 (nosebleeds at SFC for TT were $85😳). With all the alums in Chicago, it ought to be selling better. IMO.

We finally got one of those true diamond in the rough prospects.
And if you look at his skill sets, it is relatively complete. Now we hope to find out how high his ceiling is.

YES I keep thinking this. I listen to the sleepers guys a lot and they’re always saying this and I have no clue what they’re talking about even though I’d love it to be true.

(32) Boswell
(28) Wagler
(20) Petro

3&4:

(30) Andrej
(24) Mirk
(18) Ben
(8) Davis

5:

(24) T
(16) Z

Is there a video of this somewhere? I missed it.

I don't think so other than you could pull up the full game on youtube and fast forward to the end?

Edit: I actually just watched it again myself and it wasn't as wild as I remember for some reason... he does run straight to the crowd and start giving high fives, but Ben & Kylan just yell at him from center court (unsure why I misremembered them physically going over to get him... bourbon had been consumed lol)
