I’ve throughout been skeptical of the Ty talk for a couple of reason. Firstly, it would be extremely irresponsible to burn a year of eligibility. Just think for ourselves — would we rather have him for the entirety of the 2028 season, or one month in 2026, barely in playable condition? That decision is especially important for his financial gains.

Also, where are the minutes coming from? He’s a non factor shooting the ball, which would immediately bog down our offense. He’s also had little to no time accommodating to everyone’s else’s games as far as the on-court. Do we really see him playing over a guy like Jake Davis, who’s been undoubtedly awesome in his role?

Whether he comes back or not, really don’t see it being a “plug Ty in the rotation, we go from a 3seed to a 1seed” situation (as some may claim it to be).

I'm really curious to see just how much we miss Boz as we continue down the schedule without him. I wonder if our offense might be better without him from a spacing perspective. It may just put more pressure on the defense to cover more shooters. He obviously is important on defense though.

Same deal with Ty. How does he fit in this offense? If they can dork him on the offensive side, then is his defense and rebounding worth it?

I'm way more curious about how Ty would fit into the offense. I just envision his guy sagging into the lane and messing up the spacing.
I don't think you plug Ty into the starting line up ....but what I think he could bring to this team down the stretch is another defensive stopper....and very capable rebounder off the bench to spell any of the viches....don't think he helps the offense much other than rebounding and garbage points(put backs)...maybe catch and penetrate into the lane and dish to the perimeter for one of our shooters...be nice to have that at your disposal if the need arises

Me too -- was so strange he was a .240 3-point shooter for us over two years, now is shooting like he did in H.S. But you can't play a shooting guard who can't shoot....
For sure. It's like a combo of playing lesser competition (86th SoS vs 17th & 4th), more volume to get a better feel (shooting 41% in conference) and growing a year.

I'd expect him get a high major bag next year. ...just hopefully not in the B10.

I’m on the don’t play Ty this season bandwagon. We already are pushing for a 1 seed and a B1G title without him. No need to change anything
You have to wonder what that Nebraska 1st half looks like if you can put Ty on Sandfort...

Plus Nebby's defense is weakest when you attack the middle of the paint, that was one of Ty's few offensive strengths...

Can Kylan still win this or does missing a month unofficially take him out of the running?
I had the same question. Either way, glad to see him, and Big Z, getting recognized for their incredible work on that end of the floor.

Z should have a shot at B10 DPOY. He’s 4th in the nation in blocks per minute (also known as block rate):

Maybe Ty sees this year’s Illini as pretty special, with a good possibility of going deep in the tourney. Maybe in his mind, he thinks the Illini will win it all (not saying he is the only one who thinks this), and just wants to be an active part of it, and not just sit on the bench. It’s his competitive spirit. And I’m just taking a wild guess.

He can still play 4 games and redshirt, right? Maybe it's something that they test out to see if it's enough of a difference maker to materially increase our chances of a real run in March/April.

Totally agree. Although we would all love to see Ty be a plus player, that does not look very apparent for this season. Would love to be proven wrong. My hope is that he finds a fit next season and realizes his dream. He is a player to be admired for his persistence, hard work, and energy. The truth is we have no idea what he and BU have planned for his development.

I could be wrong, but I think technically by coming back this season he'd be risking this year of eligibility and he might have to sue the NCAA to have this year back. They should grant him the year, but it's not like if you redshirt and miss the year.

It's intriguing because of all the players who have transferred out of the program during Ty's tenure here with offensive fit being a prime cause, he's the single least effective floor spacer of all of them (literally has never attempted a 3 in a college game), and yet HE'S the one the staff has been willing to pay the NIL freight to keep around.

At this point I just think of him as a total wildcard, anything from him transferring to a mid-major in the offseason and never being heard from again to having two more future seasons as a star for us, to suddenly being announced as returning this week and stepping into a rotation role for us, none of it would shock me.

Spot on.

I’ll add that we also haven’t seen him shoot a basketball in over two years. He might be a sharpshooter by now with all this time! (Mostly kidding)

Not to pick nits but Ty did attempt one 3 vs Texas at MSG. It was an air ball.
