Illini Basketball 2026-2027

You're probably right about Hurley. Although the guy has been in New England for awhile between UConn and URI. Jersey ain't far. I'm fine with Hurley - have heard more good stuff from him than bad, can't fault the guy for being competitive and I think most great coaches have to be a bit psycho.
I just don't see how someone cannot regulate their emotions when at their job. Hurley's antics can't be excused away by, "Oh, hey, he's just an uber-competitive guy."

Fantastic coach, but really seems to have some anger management issues and tries to excuse them away with "but, I'm just competitive!" I know plenty of people who are very competitive but are not abusive toward officials.

Seems like we’re reading too much into one exhibition game.
True, last year Lee scored well against Illinois State but Brown did it against a quality tourney team yesterday. He did miss a few defensive rotations but I feel confident that Brown will be a role player this year. I hope Williams can make that jump as well.

By the same token I know I've seen a lot of people in "regular" professions who are just as bad as Hurley. I can't be surprised that a national champion basketball coach had that behavior excused away when I've seem and heard about similar behavior being excused, or even applauded, when it's law firm partners and CEOs and small business owners and department managers and even politicians (who you think would be especially concerned with how they conduct themselves on the job).

I listened to the game, and then watched the highlights. Ready to predict our 2026-27 player scoring averages, assuming an 8-man rotation and no serious injuries:

17 Vaaks
17 Mirk
14 Andrej
9 Q
8 Tommy
6 Ethan Brown
6 Z
4 Jake
3 All Others
----
84 TEAM TOTAL (same as the Final 4 team last season)

I think Hurley gets some of that from his father. He was pretty competitive.

That's why my post specifically said:
instructions unclear. my brain can't handle your nuance. still in off-season mode

My current overly simplistic guess at the main players once Mirk is factored in

First 8
Andrej
Quentin
Vaaks
Mirk
Tommy
Z
Jake
Ethan
Coveted #9thman spot
Will depend on a combination of opponent matchup and how the players are individually doing in practice recently:
One of Morillo, Landon, Lincoln, Zens, Jakstys

If they are truly trying to build toward something more fast paced and a deeper rotation than we have seen in recent years, there may be a
10th and 11th (or even 12th man) spots who play the rest of these players at strategic spot minutes.

I hope this happens or that there are a lot of blowout wins because a lot of the newcomers and Jason look truly exciting to watch. It’s considered “a good problem to have” but based on the exhibition I’d like to see Landon Davis more—he seems really talented—and I’d also like to see plenty more of Lincoln, Zens, Morillo, and Jason.
