Losing Epps is a MAJOR MAJOR blow.

“He’s really good. Jayden’s a rockstar. He carried us in spots in the second half. I’d be hard-pressed to find a better freshman guard, not just in this league but in the country. No turnovers. I think you look at his turnovers in the last six or seven games, they’re almost nil. Very, very few. You guys remember that press last year ate up Trent (Frazier). This year, he just cooked it. It wasn’t an issue.” - Brad Underwood

C'mon now. True that probably every coach yells sometimes. Also true there are plenty of players that appreciate tough love, ultra demanding coaching, and "being pushed hard" to be all they can be (Epps could be one). Doesn't mean they like or need to tolerate the BU brand of verbal rage fits he was delivering in front of thousands of onlookers nearly every game. I'm all for some sideline yelling from coaches, but needing to take it to the BU level with that frequency during game time seems to indicate he's got a bigger communication/instruction problem; that he's not effective as he needs to be during practice time.
I didn’t hear many people complaining about Brads yelling when we were winning big ten championships. Izzo makes Underwood look like a choir boy. If you can’t handle getting yelled at a few time then sayonara. Brad and the Illini are going to be fine.

According to 247, Indiana and Minnesota are the only schools to have more transfers out over the last two years.

I'll let everyone else argue over what that means exactly. I just looked the numbers up because I was curious.
And both Indiana and Minnesota had coaching changes. Imo a reflection of underwood and the program. As an Illinois fan these facts are concerning

You didn't hear it, but it was definitely out there. What about Izzo isn't justification for anything. I'm a big fan of BU, but one who can also admit what we're talking about is further up the spectrum of extremity than just handling getting yelled at a few times.

The bigger question with NIL, as it applies more to a Skye type player, do you get paid all up front, half up front half at seasons end, or monthly? Seems like a legit discussion we should have moving forward.
Great question. I’m trying to imagine a fairy land where NIL and loyalty coexist. In that land, NIL deals follow a vested schedule just like a 401k. As months/semesters go by, more cut is yours. Unfortunately if we’re the only ones coming to the table with that model, we’ll have a roster full of 3 stars. (yes I know Giorgi was a 3 star)

But that brings up an interesting point. Would a recruit take $50k guaranteed over year 1, or $200k on a vested schedule that ends after year 2? Would donors and sponsors dig deeper into their pockets for this level of assurance? I have no frickin idea.

Definitely concerning at first glance but a closer look I think we are mostly okay.

A lot of the transfers have been a revolving door of big men who just haven’t quite worked out. Hamlin, Omar, Spicy G, etc. Or it’s been an end of bench guy looking for a bigger role like Podz or BBV.

The only 3 rotation players we’ve lost are Ace, Belo and Alan Griffin, all of whom had some sort of drama attached whether it be a PITA parent, maturity issues etc. but they were all probably addition by subtraction in hindsight.

Really the only player that left that has thrived at their new location is Podz and that was sort of out of left field.

Yes it’s hard to build culture and get old/stay old with that kind of roster turnover but frankly an Ace/Belo backcourt would have been a disaster this year. No way to know two top 50 guys would fizzle the way they have.

Biggest concern for me is trying to steer clear of high drama players, whether that’s themselves or their camps. I’m afraid staff hasn’t learned that lesson yet as they are bringing in DGL, but who knows, law of averages says one of these kids has to hit.

Jury is out on Epps. I wish him well and if he thrives at another P5 program it’s definitely a miss but even with that you can count the number of transfers out you wish they’d kept on one hand IMO.

Edit: forgot to include Skyy and of course jury is still out but he looks like he is headed down the Mark Smith, replacement level chucker who doesn’t play defense role or has an outside shot at an Emoni Bates good stats bad team type career.

I am pretty certain we will be brining in an upgrade over Epps (And I really like Jayden's game). Writing was on the wall at the end of the year. He was pouting on the bench and not cheering for his teammates. Great player but may be good for both sides to move on. Our team next year will be better than this year by the end of April
I might be old school but the pouting and puppy dog face at the end of the bench when you get pulled for not playing adequately, is for the birds. Yeah it’s a tough departure (for now), but take that mess somewhere else. No place for it given the position he was in out of the gates.

I wish Jayden the best of luck, truly, if he's gone. He has some dawg in him. And a heck of an ability to get points at the rack for his height. He's got to recognize that PG is where he's going to have to focus for the next level and that's bigger than a mental or muscle memory shift. Maybe he'll get that fresh start and embrace leadership differently. Just 🤞 it's outside the B1G.

I bet Epps goes to Kansas. They just had some guards enter the portal and they were in on Epps after he decommited from Creighton.

BU's "verbal rage fits" are puppies licking your face compared to what I've witnessed from Izzo the past 20+ years....and that dude, like him or not... just...well...marches on.

See what I did there?
Izzo has a long line of players that stay and don't leave East Lansing before it's time to graduate or go to the NBA.

Underwood does not.

Izzo is doing something right that Underwood is not.
