It also has to do with the fact that we are the state school. We are expected to prioritize our state (and with it Chicago) by so many and as a result people feel slighted if we don't. Look how often posters on here think that Bc we are the state school top recruits should stay home and play for us. You cant at the same time say that recruits should stay home Bc we are Illinois and yet on the other hand say we don't need to cater to the largest population center in our our state and the Midwest. If you expect them to come here you have to put some effort toward making it happen.

Well put. There's definitely competing sets of unrealistic expectations: on our end, that we should get the level of in-state Loyalty that, say, Wisconsin gets; on the end of some HS coaches, that we should be the first school in on their entire roster before that level of loyalty can take root.

If going to Illinois once again represents a great chance at winning the B1G and making regular tourney runs, all of this will become moot (or close to it).

Found it. Ron "Chin" Coleman. Used to coach for mac Irvin. Responsible for bringing 2-3 mac Irvin kids to Nebraska for Miles in only 6 months when he was offered a full asst coach job at Bradley under geno. When geno was fired he joined UICs program where he still is I believe. I wouldn't be surprised if he has already tossed his hat in the ring. Apparently is well connected.

I don't dislike him as much as many Bradley fans. But I would still say don't do it. Has never won anywhere. You will be held hostage by his connections.

I think this is a generational thing. Prior generations made a big deal out of school pride and state pride. It meant something to a lot of people. I don't think too many young people feel that way anymore. This is especially true of top athletes. They move around high schools to get the best gig. They learn thay they need to become BRANDS unto themselves and so that is where their deepest loyalty is. Allegiance to any State school is going to be a low priority to most (but not all) top athletes. Allegiance to themselves is the thing. And it's hard to have loyalty to both at the same time. As many have noted by the yearly coaching shuffling going on, coaches already figured out where their loyalties are.

I'm going to be a devil's advocate for just a second and NOT because I disagree with how I personally feel he has positively changing the culture. To date, I am on board big time.

THAT SAID, it's only year one and this is a results based business. If it was anything other than a business, Groce would still be here.

There are other reasons besides winning that Groce would not still be here. In any leadership position you seek to have the people you lead perform to the best of their abilities and grow as persons. While I can't speak to how the players may have grown as persons, I have serious doubts that Groce brought out the best of his player's abilities. In fact, some looked like the regressed under his term. This is not to dump on him. This is just one reading of things from a distance.

In addition to hiring a men's bb coach and a women's bb coach, in the middle of all this whitman hired a volleyball coach when a popular and successful coach was hired away by Stanford

I would love to see Fletch stay, but if BU has a guy he trusts and has worked with throughout his conditioning programs in the past I will trust his decision on that.

Underwood follows Fletcher on Twitter if that means anything.

I'm not convinced about fletcher. I understand that the gains made by our guys last year looked impressive, however, we looked like the slower team almost every single night. Is that just due to the players we had? Or does it have to do with the types of training we were doing? Im not an expert and really don't know.

Are NFL players too big/muscular to be fast and explosive? No. The difference is the base level of athleticism. From videos fletch posted guys were doing explosive lifts. From the numbers he posted guys made athletic gains. The physical competency assessment which identifies weak areas in the body is a great tool he uses to focus extra training. We need players with a higher base level of athleticism, period.

Yes, absolutely ridiculous to pin those results on him. HOWEVER, to talk about giving him rests and raises and accolades.....Maybe one of the two hires should either first get us to a Bowl game or into the first round of the NCAA's. Either one works for me at this point and whichever one comes first....Awesome.

So....While I'm super excited about the way the arrow is pointed, seeing results is what's raises, bonus and extensions are based on. TO DATE, all we have are hires that look to be good ones

Again.....Just devil's advocate.
I agree with this.

I recall pushing for a huge John Groce pay increase in December of his inaugural season.....undefeated and coming home from Hawaii, I do believe. I was a bit premature in my judgement.

It's gotta be the players that he had to work with. We certainly weren't loaded with athletes last year, but they all seemed to make noticeable gains. The types of workouts Fletch has the guys do are focusing on functional strength and will provide more returns in the long run.
