Illini Coaching Staff

Perhaps we can still target someone from SC's staff- not sure who would leave after their success this season...Evans is a huge loss.

It's not that huge of a loss. Evans wasn't with him at Stephen F. Austin and there are many guys capable of recruiting well at Illinois.

Everyone seriously calm down, we have Walker as one of our assistants. Underwood knows what he wants and everything will work well, he's got Texas ties and I'm sure he will get someone good to join Walker. I have faith in underwood and he probably didn't expect OSU to retain his staff there, and if that's the case then big deal. #wewillwin

Does anyone think it is possible that the OSU assistants are upset about how BU left the program? As "out of the blue" as it was to everyone but Whitman and BU, I see this as a possibility. Not that I agree or disagree either way. I know we will find a solid assistant.

That's something I wondered too

I think it is more likely one was offered a P5 Head Coaching spot and the other given a hefty raise to be first assistant

If Underwood's success or failure depends so heavily on one assistant coach, then we're paying the wrong guy a lot of money. Doubt this is anywhere near as big a deal as some make it out to be. Seems more like an opportunity to me. If there was one thing (besides coaching ability) that I didn't like about Groce, it was his refusal to make any changes to the coaching staff.

Great post. These are ASSISTANT COACHES for God' sake! Get real. Coach U will make the right call.

If our assistant coach pool is at large as rumored, can't imagine they can offer more than what we have to offer for an assistant...

Boynton is making $1 mil per year just like Underwood and we had to pay $3 Million to OSU to get Underwood so they have some extra cash. Also we don't know how the rest of the salaries are going go for us. It's possible we have another big fish coming in we have to pay

I wouldn't be at all surprised. Also, Jeffrey Carroll's firm statement that Oklahoma State is the only school he'll consider playing for if he doesn't remain in the draft may be a little shot at BU's perceived lack of loyalty. Furthermore, Underwood is an intense, demanding personality. Possible that Evans didn't love working for him. I'm not worried about how it's going to work out in the end - we'll end up with a good staff. The present situation is less than ideal, though, in terms of both practical considerations and optics.

No kidding...it isn't like the assistants at OSU were the only people in the coaching world that he knows or has worked with. Seriously...

Exactly the guy has a ton of experience and connections. A lot of names have been mentioned in this thread, but I think some had their minds made up for whatever reason. Maybe it was keeping Walker. Who knows?

crazy how different the reactions between this board and scout board are.

I don't get it...2 weeks ago, if you would have asked everyone, "hey we can make a great hire and he won't bring any assistants with him or we can go get someone else who will bring assistants," everyone would have just wanted a great hire. Whitman did that and now the assistants will work out.

Well I guess things have been going along to well the last couple of weeks and this board needed a good excuse for a freak out. Not that that has passed can we reasonable discuss the possible options out there. There are probably dozens of assistants that would fit well here. Let's see where this goes.

Any thoughts on Rob Judson?

Played here. Coached at NIU, Bradley, ISU, Indiana, and here. Head coaching experience at NIU. With Crean gone, he's available.

Also, based on some comments Underwood has made, it seems like he has a very good relationship with Lon Kruger, who happened to be Head Coach at Illinois while Judson was an assistant here.

I'd be good with that. He's very well respected around Illinois basketball circles. Not sure he solves the Chicago problem though. I think he's connected everywhere but isn't a Chicago guy. He was here during Krugers freeze out.

The defensive philosophy is derived from Huggins and Martin, right? Granted, I'm far from an expert in basketball, but makes sense the preferred defensive principles should not be overly difficult to teach (the question is do you have the right personnel to run)?

In terms of offense, so long as we have Underwood, I think we'd be ok. Sure, you want a good tactician on the sideline, but don't think Walker is a slouch there (just needs homework with Underwood system) ... and then you still have two spots to find your ace Chicago or national recruiter and another specialist or hybrid recruiter/tactician.

The world is not ending, folks.

Lol I hope people in this thread are joking around. We look/sound ridiculous. It's one assistant coach. Who cares?

For all of those who are worried about cohesion and such, relax. A good leader will build cohesion quickly. As a retired Air Force SMSgt, I know first hand about good and bad leaders having worked with and for both. If BU is not a good leader it would have shown on the court at SFA.

Let's maybe wait until we actually officially announce at least one of our assistant coaches before we start going to worst case scenarios.

Out of Underwood's three assistants at OK State only one of them was an assistant with him at SFA. Hiring new assistants isn't exactly something he doesn't have experience with.

This! If there was an assistant to be concerned over it was Boyton. The other two were less important. Boyton is the only one that came from SFA and the only one that really knew BU's full system. Given the resources available UI should be able to attract the caliber asst that is able to learn a good bit of the system over the next 4-5 months.

I just heard from a source that we'll be hiring Dennis Gates and Shane Heirman, getting commitments from Mark Smith, Tugs Bowen, and a 5th year C/PF, and running roughshod over the Big Ten next year.

BUT THEN, I heard from another source that Jamall Walker hasn't been announced officially because he's defecting to Missouri after all and taking Tilmon, Smith, and Da'Monte with him. Gates and Heirman are not interested according to the second source and our actual staff will consist of Thomas Walkup and a former student manager from SFA. Third assistant (our "Chicago guy") is purportedly a can of cream of mushroom soup with eyes and a mustache drawn on it.

We'll see which trusted source hits closer to the mark.
