Illini Coaching Staff

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or if it has been discussed but what is Underwood's pt like for freshman in the past? I know he won't have much choice because of the class he has but what are the thoughts or historical evidence? Is he like groce and says players will play then not actually play them til it is too late or does he truly play the best players? Anyone with more knowledge on this would be appreciated

In his introductory interviews Underwood said he not only has played, but has started freshman every year he has been a head coach.

I disagree. It was bad his freshman year. He really improved his defense and rebounding this year. If he had shot the ball like he has in the past, he would have had a really good sophomore year.

I agree, especially at the end of the year. He brought great energy during the late season run. He is not a lock down defender but he was pretty solid especially at the end of the year.

Defensive end it's not even close. Coaches thought so too, as they voted Nunn all B1G freshman team. Will put JCL in that impactful category, though. Two in 5 years is still not good.

Guess MH isn't considered impact.

Freshmen playing time was the least of John Groce's worries and was/is blown way out of proportion. If you are relying on freshmen to carry you then you're in trouble. And that's true for any program except blue bloods. Even for blue bloods it doesn't work out all the time.

We need a staff that will develop freshmen so they can perform as upperclassmen. That's what Groce couldn't do.

Yeah I def agree. People on this board grossly underrate how JCL improved defensively and worked well as a system defender. I can recall him intercepting balls in passing lanes and causing numerous loose balls. There were instances in the game where JCL actually functioned as an energy/glue guy doing all the immeasurables and I felt he was underappreciated in that regard.

Is everyone else still seeing 3 as the current number of new I-Fund donors? If that's true, come on people, don't complain on the internet all day and not pony up.

I think it's just a glitch/bug, kinda like how YouTube vidoes used to have low view counts despite being a viral video.

I agree JCL's defense & rebounding were much improved this year.

La Lumiere (IN) secures their 1st @DICKSNationals Championship. Congratulations to @ShaneHeirman & the entire @LaLuBasketball program.

Can't hurt Shane's chances if he's looking to take a step up.

Heirman will be a D1 assistant next year for sure. I'd take him here, but I'm betting he ends up at DePaul or someplace comparable. I think Underwood will look for experience and/or people from the Huggins/Martin tree.

I am going to assume BU has everyone picked for his staff. I assume he is just waiting on timing to be able to announce them for some reason.

(Their teams still playing)
(They are staying where they are until after signing day)
(Time requirements for U of I to list jobs)

Something.

Otherwise I have an issue with the delay. Other staffs that were hired after him are filling out the staff. I am pretty sure he has it all lined up.

Its by far the biggest networking event of the year this weekend for college basketball. I imagine that's what he's waiting on.

Not Illini BB related but coaching does matter. South Carolina Woman's BB just won the National Championship led by a local player. They also led the nation in attendance. Dawn Staley the Head Coach was a great PG at Virginia and Olympian. The record at South Carolina before she got there was 20-60 and they couldn't get people to come watch them play.

I'm not a woman's bb fan, in fact it is hard for me to watch (except this year's Olympic team). But need to give credit where it is due, and acknowledge that coaches can build a program from the bottom.

So can we assume we will have some sort of announcement or at least some known information regarding the rest of the staff after the game tonight? By Friday?

I'd guess in the next several days.

I'm trying not to get too anxious about BU not naming his other assistants yet, but as Mayan Kiir just announced he was asking for his release from his NLI, I checked to see who Will Wade had hired as an assistant at LSU. It was Tony Benford, who's a stud both as a coach and a recruiter. I'm still patient but ....... hopefully soon, and it's a home run.

I was thinking that Mayan Kiir's head coach at Victory Rock Prep (Loren Jackson) would be an intriguing candidate for an assistant coach.
