Illini Coaching Staff

Tribune is a big fan of the Antigua hire. Headline for the David Haugh article "Recruiting overreaction overshadows Illinois hiring aide with NCAA baggage". Shannon Ryan article, "Illinois adds Orlando Antigua, who was under investigation at USF, to coaching staff".

I think Robert summed it up pretty well.
"Why can't Illinois get kids like Anthony Davis to stay home?"
*Illinois hires Anthony Davis' recruiter*
"Why would Illinois hire this guy?"

I noticed that on Oklahoma State's athletics website Stephen Gentry is no longer listed on the coaching staff. Good sign that what has long been assumed is actually happening and he is joining Underwood's support staff?

Haugh is a joke. I think he mentioned "academic fraud" once at the very beginning but continued to mention "NCAA investigation", "gamble", "risk", and "poor judgement" while talking about his recruiting. Just very biased, untruthful writing. I won't even call it journalism.

That is interesting.

I'm curious what you think is inaccurate about that characterization of Antigua? He's got baggage, not sure how one could argue that point. Doesn't mean he isn't a good assistant coach or "recruiter".

Yes he does have baggage. But his baggage is an investigation into academic fraud. It has nothing to do with his recruiting. Do I think he's squeaky clean? Hell no. But I don't think any major program is. My problem was how he tried to shape the article to make it seem like everything about him, especially recruiting-wise, was dirty and questionable.

Sort of ironic that our best recruiter and our coach in charge of developing the bigs just got hired and that same day our biggest post player commit in years decommits. Irony

Very ironic. I would love to know if Antigua has any past relationship with Tilmon along the recruiting trail, or if Tilmon had any views as to his coaching abilities and if that in any way influenced his decision to request his release? Otherwise the timing is just coincidental.

Theres a difference between a recruiter being able to get those borderline top 150 players and being able to snag special players (like the three i mentioned previously). You can't possibly see him as an ace. He just hasn't landed marquee names. Label that unlucky or what have you, but its still the truth.

I'm not saying he's got to get all three, or even two, and he still has the possibility to get at least one, but his chances are dwindling. I said earlier I really like Walker, but labeling him as a stud STL recruiter is absolutely wrong.

I think his value to this team can indeed be making in roads with a lot of highly talented recruits but much like Groce, sealing the deal doesn't seem to be his forte.

It hasn't been his forte when trying to sell a recruit on a team that hasn't been to the big dance in five years. I don't care how good a recruiter you are, that's a tough sell. I'll be anxious to see how he does promoting a team that starts really winning.

Rumor on the recruiting thread that we have our final assistant and it's a big name. Apparently not Ron Coleman or Heirman. If true, it almost has to be Dennis Gates or Mike Mennenga. Guessing Gates due to Chicago connections. Really hoping this proves true. Antigua and Gates might literally be two of the five best recruiters in the country.

A four way rumble between Oak, Zo, Hardaway and LJVG for the final assistant position. I dig

Do we know who the coaches may be looking at as an Asst or a player that is in Florida? My buddy just sent me a pic of Underwood, Jamal and Antigua sitting next to him on a plane headed for Fla.
