Illini Football 2017

What's even more sobering is the fact that some of the upperclassmen that we're counting on have had few if any starts. Sean Adesanya is a RS JR who is expected to start and he has never played a down for Illinois. James Crawford has made around 7 starts in his career but none of them have been at DE. Crouch has only started one game. Even Kendrick Foster, a fifth year Senior and the MVP of the Offense last year, only has 7 career starts.

That doesn't mean these guys can't be successful but we're counting on players to be leaders who have limited experience themselves.

If injuries happen at certain positions, we are in a lot of trouble. There's just too many Freshmen that we have to count on this season so count me down for 2 wins this year, plus or minus 2 in either direction. I'm looking forward to seeing the Freshmen play and can only hope for improvement as the season goes on. I actually liked what I saw out of some of the Freshmen as the season went on last year.

I hope the issue with Smalling isn't serious and he is out there practicing soon. I was hoping he would be returning punts this year. I'm guessing C. Green and Hobbs are also possibilities.

The battle between Sumpter and Watkins for the 2nd CB spot should be interesting. I'd give the edge to Watkins but am not seeing that much difference between the two. Maybe Hobbs works his way in to some playing time this year as well.

BTW, I noticed on the latest roster that Trenard Davis is listed as a WR.

Im not to worried about counting of FR to play, but I do agree with you that we truly need to stay healthy. We really need to stack up another good class this year to have depth even if its young depth next year.

I have to admit that the comments by Crouch's teammates have me encouraged. He sounds like a leader. I don't expect a great arm, but if he can motivate and organize the plays on the field, and make the plays he has to make, we might be able to put together some offense.

Big Ten Coaches Talk Anonymously About Conference Foes for 2017

Illinois

“The Lovie (Smith) thing is interesting. It’s still too early to tell if he can leverage his NFL name in recruiting."

"I think a lot of career college guys questioned the timing of Lovie coming in and the school’s decision to fire Bill (Cubit) because that staff was well-respected, but no one should’ve been shocked. That was the best chance Illinois has had at national attention."

"Is Mike Dudek still injured? That’s the only offensive player I can name off the top of my head, and that’s the problem."

"(Offensive coordinator) Garrick (McGee) might have to lean on their running game this season."

"When you watch their tape you don’t see the depth or the talent that it takes to win in this conference. We didn’t have to change what we liked to do on defense in any area against them."

"They have to get a pipeline going from out of state because they can’t survive on the in-state kids they land, not even close. The first class they signed was decent, but it’s not the return on what Lovie was supposed to provide."

"The bottom of the league is going to get better, especially after this offseason. This is the program that could be left behind.”

Bulletin board motivation.

This list of quotes is garbage, and I mean that hat for ok a journalistic standpoint. Look, there are 14 teams in the conference, and the had how many quotes about Illinois? Who are those from, really? All from the same coach or...?

Beyond that, Lovie is the odd man out. All the other newbie coaches had positive things said about them, but Lovie was damned with h faint praise.

I think this montage of quotes, if real, is worth what you paid for it. Or less. .

I think it shows they're afraid of Lovie the most out of all the new coaches. So they took the opportunity to cast aspersions on him and the program.

Hey, thanks Dan for the video postings. After watching them all, I'm having a hard time not getting positive. It's a young team, but I can't wait to see this team on the field this year.

Wouldn't it be nice if Illini get to the point where we can lose a highly-touted 4-star QB and not blink an eye?

As for the story, seems like the punishment of being out all summer training for a public intox in April is a little harsh. Must have been more to the story because kids will be kids (college athletes included).

Yeah, I'd read it that way too. But gathering a handful of pull quotes from interviews that we really don't know took place isn't journalism. What else was said that wasn't reported? How can we judge the accuracy or comprehensiveness of this report, or the writer's biases?

I don't care if it's right or wrong, it's clickbait and it's crap.

I found it interesting to hear other coaches honest thoughts.

I don't know how you could read "Illinois could be the team in the Big Ten that gets left behind" as "All the other coaches are scared of Lovie"

That has to be the biggest homer take I have ever seen on Loyalty and that is saying a lot.

I completely believe in Lovie, but other people are skeptical, and that's fair because we just went 3-9. Lovie isn't going to truly gain the respect of his peers until he proves he can win at the college level.

I'll hand it to you for your quick survey of your knowledgeable friends.

What do you and your friends think about a B1G coach who doesn't anyone but Dudek on the Illinois roster? Not even quarterback? Think you might be being played?

And no one had anything positive to say about Illinois, unlike any other team/coach? It's all too improbable.

I'm not sure why you're so defensive about the "article", but I'll stand by evaluation of it being poor journalism/clickbait.

Neither the national media nor fans of other teams care about excuses whether they are valid or not.

People look at record and pretty much record only.

I don't really care if it's click bait or not because it mostly reaffirms everything opinion I have heard from other cfb fans.

For me, I don't need Lovie to be validated by the media to think he is a good coach, but I am still interested in how others perceive him.
