Illini Football 2017

Lawson still has huge question marks of even getting to Illinois in August, this statement is pretty much backing that up.

Right. When he wasn't announced with the class, my assumption was he will never set foot on campus. Maybe that was an overreaction, but this is another piece of evidence in that direction.

This is ultimately my point I guess.

Because, play this thing forward. This year, if we're being honest, is a 12-game preseason for 2018. But 2018 is a huge, pivotal year for this coaching administration. If Chayce Crouch is the starter and "undisputed leader" of the team now, I have a hard time seeing Cam Thomas or Coran Taylor changing that in the next 15 months. In year 3 of the Lovie era, when it's time for the winning to start, the starting QB is going to be Chayce Crouch? Really?

Going bowling with Chayce Crouch is child's play compared with dragging Rex Grossman to the Super Bowl, sure, but man, why can't we do this the easy way?

I'm totally with you on this. A year of Crouch/JGJ does not excite me at all. Lawson was the real X factor here and he won't be ready to play this year if he even shows up.

Crouch is the clear favorite for a number of reasons. He's got good size and scrambling ability but limited playing experience so he is somewhat of a question mark. His passing ability appears to be somewhat limited as well although we really haven't seen a whole lot of it. I have a hard time believing this offense is going to take a giant leap with him under center. With all the losses on defense that means a year of 2-3 wins ahead, at best.

Lawson here for Spring and Fall practices would have been exciting, but it is what it is.

Comments like this get real old. Then why bother playing the games? Just practice for another year+. Saves the alumni long drives across the state to tailgate, and relieves the poor Marching Illini from having to carry their instruments from sunup to sundown. All our scheduled opponents get a bye. Do you people actually go to the games? This is big time college football.

Dudek is looking good speed is there ability to cut on a dime check that box also.

Agree. Comments like that are super tiring.

It is what it is. We might be the youngest FBS team in the nation this year, that's just not going to give us a real chance.

But the lumps we take next year are going to forge our future success. That's why we play. Nobody said this was going to be easy or fast.

This might sound like a dumb way to look at things but, I have decided to hope for 6 wins, but for every true FR that starts -1 win, just going to use this as my base on what to expect for the year.

Chayce Crouch

Word is Chayce is throwing the ball with some zip. A lot more zip than prior to injury. If he does not try and take on any linebackers and with the addition to Dudek the offense will have several new looks.

I can only imagine that our 3rd down conversion rate should be much higher than in previous years with triple threat options of Chayce, Dudek, and Foster!!!

For those in the know, let's say Dwayne Lawson actually qualifies and makes it on campus; would he still start over a more experienced Crouch?

I don't think it's a question of IF, but just WHEN he will qualify and get here.

Could be June, August or December. Even if he arrives here in June, I would still give Crouch the edge.

Guaranteed, we will need more than one quarterback.
Happens to every NFL team as well.

I don't think it's a question of IF, but when Dawson STARTS. Even if Crouch has a decent year, you can't keep Dawson's level of athleticism off the field.

It will be interesting. We should be able to get a couple non conference wins and then we have a chance to beat Minnesota, Purdue, Rutgers, IU, and/or NW. You never know.

We should know by the end of week 2 if the Illini will show any improvement this year. WKU is very good for their league, but, realistically, would be a BIG bottom feeder. If Illinois cannot beat them at home, then the trip to Tampa will be a rough one, too, because USF's fans are already talking about possibly going undefeated.

I look for real improvement in the offensive line and at the QB position if Crouch stays healthy. But that defensive line.....

I haven't seen this posted anywhere on this forum yet, but it appears that former Illini HFBC Bill Cubit has taken the head coaching job at Martin County High School in Stuart, Florida.:congrats:
