Hansen wasn't the only LB not getting off blocks and not getting to the right spot on defense....coaching and talent deficiencies?I don't. Is he a leader, yes absolutely. And tad overrated is not accurate. He does not have the physical ability to get off blocks, clog running lanes or run down a ball carrier. We have better options already on the team
I wish him only the best - seems he could benefit from one more year under better tutelage and to gain a bit more size. He's been a great Illini through thick and thin.I can respect that you 100%. We want the best players on the field for the overall benefit of the entire program, not just one player. I just think we don’t have to go that route anyway or cross that bridge because he’s going to try to land on eith a team in the NFL, undrafted FA most likely or maybe he gets drafted and a team take a late round flyer on him...
But you didn’t say anything, I just thought I’d kill off any potential argument about the topic with some news that he is not likely to be back...
PFF says he's one of the best tacklers in the nation, creates a hell of a lot of turnovers (the most important defensive statistic if you were to ask me), and was voted to all-conference teams by coaches and media. Do we really have better options on this team?@VAIllini35 made a great point about his lack of a legitimate position coach. I posted the Wisconsin game from last year in post #60. I choose that one because everyone remembers his great forced fumble to help the upset. But if you watch the whole game play by play, you see someone who cannot get off blocks, tries to run around blocks but just opens the running lane more, is not fast enough to cover down field.
I want to make sure this is clear, I am not bad mouthing any player. In fact I would say that not giving an honest opinion about a players current ability is disrespectful. I perceive Jake as a fighter and a competitor. Therefore he deserves to be handled with adult gloves and given honest feedback.
Is that the same PFF that said Hansen had not missed one single tackle all year? A stat when was brought to Lovie's attention before the Northwestern game even made him laugh and say that was not true.PFF says he's one of the best tacklers in the nation, creates a hell of a lot of turnovers (the most important defensive statistic if you were to ask me), and was voted to all-conference teams by coaches and media. I feel like Bielema would have been a benefit to HansenHansen is a really good player but what are his NFL prospects? I'm struggling to see it
Eh, he just doesn't really have the speed and fluidity for the pros. To the extent he was productive as a collegian it was through aggressiveness to the point of frankly guessing a lot of times. He was prone to leaving himself out of position on a counter or a play action pass, and was pretty poor in coverage, another problem for his pro prospects. But he had anticipation good enough to guess right a lot of the time, was a sure tackler, and had a knack for punching the ball loose.I feel like Bielema would have been a benefit to Hansen
All respect to Hansen, but in four very productive years here he isn't half the player Fej was in two, the dude was unreal.Look at the career that Fej has made for himself. You never know. A lot comes down to just being in the right situation at the right time. Good luck to Hansen.
Totally agree. I’m from Rockford, too, and I pushed for both of them to go to Illinois, by calling, emailing, and sending letters with newspaper clippings to both football and basketball coaches. Weber was in Rockford and said he saw and liked VanVleet, but he never offered...It’s ridiculous. I’m from the same hometown as Robinson and know people who were pushing his name towards Illinois with zero interest. Same problem on the basketball side with VanVleet.
Legend has it....Snacks was supposed to meet and scout VanFleet. Heard he overslept and never saw him.Totally agree. I'm not a big ten coach and don't watch as much around the country as the media, so I wouldn't be able to judge a player like them. Apparently one video from one terrible terrible game on all fronts proves he's overrated. Is that the same PFF that said Hansen had not missed one single tackle all year? I will not repeat as it is going to become me attacking a player. For all the responses about the potential of the 1 TO a game and what PFF says. Watch the tape I posted, tell me what you see. It takes just as much time to look up certain stats that support your narrative as it does to watch that tape. Tell me what you see
VanVleet got a very nice offer from Wichita State.Totally agree. I picked the Wisconsin game because it is a perfect example of his career. He had a great force fumble to help the comeback. And that is what most people remember. Does not take a B1G coach to see what I am talking about. This is the proper comparison. He won’t be a starting MLB but I could easily see him becoming a special teams stud. He’s like Velcro in the open field. Good luck Jake - you were my kinda guy. Bad measurables but all guts and results.Look at the career that Fej has made for himself. You never know. A lot comes down to just being in the right situation at the right time. I'm not saying he's a star, I'm just wondering which middle linebackers on the bench on the worst defense in the B1G are better than Hansen? That way I can get excited about what's to come next season.I picked the Wisconsin game because it is a perfect example of his career. He had a great force fumble to help the comeback. That's a good question. Let's hope Tarique Barnes can get the proper coaching we have been lacking the last few yearsI'm not saying he's a star, I'm just wondering which middle linebackers on the bench on the worst defense in the B1G are better than Hansen? Dudes an animal but he had to leave seeing the success of Karras and Allegretti. But plugging in Jeresaty? I like that a lot.
Big, big loss for next year's team, though not an unexpected one.
A great, underrated Illini career.
