I will add this , with all due respect to those who think these high profile , far away travel games are great .

Given the pandemic and how it has effected everything related to sports in such a negative way , and continues to do so , I scratch my head wondering how this game’s location is still officially up for debate .

We need wins this year way more than anything else . Going to any neutral site , internationally or domestically , is crazy in that it puts us at a disadvantage in winning the game .

let’s get our respect back in terms of W-L’s before we schedule these travel games . The odds of BB winning his first game for us while in Ireland is likely about 20% . we have a terrible history in these “neutral site “ affairs .

just my opinion .

I don’t at all think these are “great,” but college athletes love these trips and it’s educational for them and many couldn’t afford to go to Ireland if not being paid for by the team. Also, you act like Nebraska isn’t also traveling! You place our chance of winning at “20%.” Are you saying Nebraska’s chance of winning improves because the game is in Ireland vs. say Soldier Field in Chicago?

in the last 40 years , our history of games at neutral sites , bowls included , is REALLY REALLY bad . The game at Wrigley being an outlier .

I think with us having a new staff , this game overseas is far from ideal and hurts us more .

Then there is the return home on Sunday and all that adjusting . We play the next Saturday . Nebraska ? yea they have a bye in week 2

If covid-19 is on the run, and they let more than 10% of fans in, The Illinois - Nebraska game will have north of 55K in the stands. Nebraska travels well and it is almost always a 50-50 crowd when the Huskers come to town. Illinois fans will be curious to see the new regime's debut and celebrate watching Illini football after a year off. That would make for a good payday for the DIA.

If Illinois can get maximum of 10K in the stands do to covid-19 restrictions, I would guess, even with travel costs, Illinois gets a better payday from their hosts in Ireland than at a socially distanced Memorial Stadium.

We have to remember, Ireland is counting on thousands of Nebraska and Illinois fans to travel. Will they go if covid-19 is still a threat? The Ireland hosts might be praying for a postponement.

It would be awesome to see BB debut in Week 0 at home. It would probably be covid-19 safer to be at home, no matter attendance limits. But, it might be a bigger payday to go to Ireland.

I really hope the Illini stay home this year and, if they must, go to Ireland in 2023 to play Nebraska.

In the last 40 years, our record is really, really bad, so I see no difference between the two. :poop:

We play UTSA so I personally am not going to think that will be an issue

Sorry haven't read back through but been wondering since Bret talked about kids coming in I heard nothing about Alabama transfer also Notre dame transfer!!
Everything still good with them or???

The easier and more obvious part of this to measure is how is Covid messing with this games in terms of potential lockdowns, positivity rates, vaccine rollouts, etc.

The underlying part of that is a lot of people, both degreed and not degreed, have lost their jobs from this. Many that haven’t are clawing by, and those lucky enough to be comfortable, but not rich, are creating a bigger rainy day fund for themselves and their families, if possible. That all adds up to disposable income that might normally be out there to splurge on a trip like this might not be there.

I thought it was a cool idea when it was first announced, but I feel like it’s time to bring the game home.

Illini got Eddie Smith, safety from Alabama. Griffith from ND decided not to transfer.

Sorry to bring back up the Ireland game, but saying that the players enjoy these types of things is probably true, but this is the first game of the regular season. This isn't a bowl game where they can stay there for a week and do touristy things. They have a game scheduled for 6 days after this one, and have to ramp up for an entire season beforehand, installing a completely new system with a new coaching staff. This is not going to be treated like an exhibition/bowl game, nor should it.

If you took a pool of the players on whether they would want to go to Ireland for this game as scheduled, what do you think the results would be?

Everyone does realize this is a regular season game right? This isn't an exhibition or a bowl game, or even a game surrounded by bye weeks. It's coming straight off of training camp, the first camp of an entirely new regime. They're playing a beatable conference opponent, but still a B1G team nonetheless, not a cupcake. They will have to fly home and begin preparing for a game being played the very next Saturday. What do people think this trip is going to be like? Do you think a coach like Bielema is going to want to take away ANY of his allotted practice/prep time to go sightseeing? I'm not arguing that it's not a cool idea or that I wouldn't want to go to Ireland to visit and watch my team play, but it makes no logical sense to play this game as is. Hell, we haven't even gotten to Covid. Every sports schedule has been drastically changed to accommodate and hopefully prevent Covid outbreaks. People aren't even allowed to go watch our home games, but we're supposed to be all good with international travel for a game?

As everyone seems to be saying about MI in basketball, just play it as it is scheduled.
