Excited and hopeful are a couple things to consider.
I can live with this if it does not stunt the growth of Barnes, Cooper and Tolson. I prefer out lb’s make the majority of their tackles near the line of scrimmage as opposed to 7-10 yards downfield. Even though it looks like we might play a 3-4, I am not sure any of those 3 plus Hansen are outside backers.

It's real simple. We were 2-5 or something dismal like that. We need all the help we can get. We just got some help. You want a freshman?
If the freshman makes plays at the line of scrimmage, yes. I believe Cooper, Tolson and Barnes are better inside backers than Hansen. I don’t think any of them plus Hansen are real outside backers in a 3-4 look if that is the base defense. Maybe Cooper, but Tolson and Barnes are not tall enough and Hansen is definitely not fast enough.

The best addition possible for this team. Just added an All-American at a position of need who's already familiar with the personnel.
Is this a real statement? All-American? The dispensary must be open on south Neil.

I dont know about All-American. That's like calling J Leaman an All-American LB. Still a very solid get for this team. Curious on how they will use him. Or what type of defense they will use.

Agree with this. I like Jake as a person and representative for the team, but I thought there were better players begging for time last year. I actually don't see him as a starter. Perhaps if he were coached up - he could make the leap to get tackles at the line or behind, and better coverage in the middle on pass plays.

I hope he's turns out to be a rock star, but i thought we had better options/potentials last year missing snaps.

Really? Genuinely curious here. I don't follow football quite as closely as basketball. I know Hansen isn't a perfect player, but I thought we didn't have much waiting in the wings either.

From this article.....https://www.thechampaignroom.com/2021/3/1/22307552/jake-hansen-returning-to-illinois-for-2021-season-fighting-illini-ncaa-big-ten...

"Under Lovie Smith, Hansen epitomized Lovie Ball, forcing 10 fumbles (third-most in program history) and leading the nation in forced fumbles in 2019. He also had 14 takeaways over the last two seasons, the most of any player in the nation.

Hansen was named to watch lists for the Butkus, Bednarik and Nagurski awards over the past two years at Illinois. The Florida native was also an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2019 and All-Big Ten second team (Media) and third team (Coaches) in 2020."

I hope the guys he were blocking from playing time end up with these kind of accolades!

Funny he led the team in tackles behind the line, also has the most turnovers of Anyone in the country over the last 2 years and didn't play the whole schedule of games. RtBritt beat me.

That is good news. Brings experience, football IQ, leadership, and overall depth to that position. Welcome back Jake and not from State Farm. He isn't wearing khakis, he is wearing Orange and Blue.
and he's REAL good at forcing fumbles. I assume BB is OK with that. LOL

I am assuming you watched all of our games with Hansen at backer the last several years? It was either feast of famine. Zero consistency. He did make big plays, but time and time again, he did not make routine plays that should be made by a good inside backer.

yea, he must have been ignoring the coaching he was getting the last 3 years from Miles Smith..........

getting Hansen back, with all his off field leadership and on field skills is AWESOME !
he's taking a free spot on the roster. He costs nothing. BB has to be ecstatic

I was gonna say
I love Jake. but nfw does he ever run a sub 4.9 40 yard dash . he’s made his bones figuring out where to be before the play unfolds . he really never gets to the runner or receiver by catching up to them
