Great post-game article from Robert at Illiniboard:

Link

He talks about “strain” which is apparently a BB term.

In a nutshell, strain is equivalent to that “extra effort” players show. BB uses McCray’s TD against Maryland as an example. BB highlights several players’ efforts (Ford, Reiman, and even some players on the sideline) that make the play happen. The little things that probably are unnoticed by us but the coaches notice.

Anyway, Robert makes the point that BB’s strain needs to be trusting his team to close out games and get 2 yards when he needs them to. He’s not going the extra mile for them like he’s expecting them (and us fans honestly) to go for him.

The next time that we see Peters “strain”, it will be the first time. It all starts right there at the most important position. Buzz words blah blah blah if you aren’t going to hold Peters accountable for his uninspired play.

It might be somewhere in a post in one of the blogs, but what is up with Marquez Beason and Shammond Cooper? Are they both still battling injuries that they can't see the field? I believe I saw where Beason is still recovering, but not sure on Cooper. Again, apologies if its been discussed somewhere else.

Last I heard is Cooper is healthy and BB is starting to get him involved, but maybe only in sub package type role

I obviously don’t know what wrinkles they have in their scheme and what they use their guys for, but since Cooper is a former ILB and has that skill set (in theory) he seems like a guy that would be good to drop in coverage from that OLB spot to change up the traditional rush. Bring an overload rush from the opposite side roll the ILB to cover the blitzers side and Cooper to cover him.

This could be accomplished without blitzing out of our 2-4-5 look that we sometimes employ in passing downs. Maybe throw a stunt in with our 2 down lineman to really make the o-line think. We’d still have 7 in coverage and wouldn’t have to stress our secondary in man. I’d roll the secondary into a Cover 3 look since it’s a passing down.

That is literally just me spit balling a way to try to get him on the field and bridge his current and former position. Like I said I don’t know what they’re looking to do.

I don't know either but BB keeps bringing it up. Have to feel like he is the zone/coverage specialist of the OLB group. Have a feeling he would get more reps if we were up and a team felt like they needed to pass.

Can someone elaborate on the situation with Beason? How does a top 100 recruit not find the field at a school like Illinois? Was he overrated that much?

When you tear your ACL (I think that's the injury he had), I think it is pretty much impossible to come back 100%. Especially mentally--there's that constant fear that it will happen again, which limits your cutting abilities and things he would have done before the injury. I think we are seeing that with several players who had knee injuries last year.

Despite rehabbing every day, it took me two years before I felt the old explosion in that leg come back. It had nothing to do with my confidence. The explosion was just not there to the same degree.

Peters is driving me up the wall holding onto the ball and eating sacks. But I don't doubt that he's our best QB right now.

Sit has done a better job using his legs for a positive gain when the play’s not there than Peters. He’s just not a good qb.. I’m tired of my Michigan friend getting a good laugh every time we run him out there lol
