I just saw a great podcast where a young guy predicted the Illini to go 10-2 this fall. His two projected losses were AT Purdue and AT Iowa. Not sure I'd recommend betting with this guy, but it was a fun 15 minute listen.

I think he called himself "The Football Expert."

I won’t greedy if we are even SNIFFING 10-2, but man would I like one of those wins to be at Iowa…

Love seeing this!

The current rise in prominence of the Illini football program feels a lot like the Mike White years in the early 1980's, as we similarly rose from the ashes. For that entire decade (plus), we were nearly always in the conversation and we had a legitimate shot at winning every game. From the time that the players took the field at the start of the game, we physically looked just as intimidating as the Buckeyes, Wolverines and Hawkeyes. We actually expected to win every game. We never got blown out..........and we actually owned the Buckeyes about a 10-year period.

1980 Year 1: 3-7-1
1981 Year 2: 7-4
1982 Year 3: 7-5
1983 Year 4: 10-2

Go Bret!!!

agree
I was a student from 1979-1983

after graduating I came back down for 1-2 games in CU plus we would go to an away game every year

then I started having kids in 1990 and everything changed . plus the team sucked from 1992-2000, so why bother fighting wifey on it

team got good again and we bought a family ticket package from 2000-2005 until the lads started playing youth football

but the 1980’s were fun times to watch them play . place was packed and they scored way more than they gave up

Love everything about this. The sound system is going to be a big plus, more concessions is great after the last couple years of awfulness, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the east side looks like. It's always kind of been a drab eye sore inside the concourse. Also really excited if they are looking at redoing the game environment/entertainment because that's been just boring and unexciting for awhile now.

This has a far different meaning for the people from St. Louis...

Love every opportunity to hear Whitman speak, and I love what he had to say this time!

RIP to my desperate hope of them fixing up the Horseshoe soon, though. :(
The more I think about this, I am actually kind of disappointed. There are "quick fixes" we could do to at least make the Horseshoe a bit more visually appealing, both inside and outside of the stadium. I am a bit puzzled why that is SUCH a low priority for so many. As I have said before, I have brought many non-Illini fans to Memorial Stadium, and they spend the first couple hours outside the stadium talking about how beautiful it is due to the brick architecture and the columns ... only to be completely underwhelmed when they get inside. Every single one says most of the stadium looks fine, but the Horseshoe is comically far away from the end zone, and it's frankly really ugly to the point of distracting from the rest of the stadium. Even just putting temporary bleachers that bring the stands down to field level on game days would be a massive improvement aesthetically and not difficult in any way, shape or form.

Yeah but we put an entire basketball court between the stands and the south end zone that one time.

It would literally look better if we had a permanent basketball court there rather than this empty grass. :ROFLMAO:

It would honestly even look better with the track still there (like Kansas) or a frickin' garden or ANYTHING but empty grass extending a hilarious distance past the goal line. I know it is this way because we used to have a track, but we have not had one in years. Right now, while looking at the rest of the stadium, it honestly looks like we just messed up and got the angle wrong on accident and decided to stop. :ROFLMAO:(n)

I know I care about this more than most, but I wouldn't expend any energy on it if the rest of Memorial Stadium weren't so beautiful and the potential weren't so high. This should be one of the most revered stadiums in the conference; there is nothing we don't have "baked in" to make it a beautiful stadium that places like Camp Randall and Kinnick Stadium have ... we just have one end zone that looks totally out of place, outdated and ugly.

I'll be honest, that view is literally the view from my seats in the stadium (like... I'm shocked I can't see the back of my head in that photo). This photo exaggerates that space... a lot. Honestly, in 17 years of season tickets I've never once thought "hmm... that's a lot of grass right there". Well, I suppose it hasn't been that way for the entire 17 years, but the point is made. There are WAY bigger concerns of mine involving the gameday experience and the stadium. That open patch doesn't even crack the top 100.

The photo definitely exaggerates it, and it's not like this is holding back our program in some super serious way. However, I would argue you that you are used to it, as I just do not think it looks imposing at all for the away team, and a lot of my non-Illini fans agree. The ultimate goal for Memorial Stadium should be for it to give us a great home field advantage and intimidate opponents, and I think we need that feel of fans right on top of you. Multiple schools have figured out a way to do it in relatively small stadiums (smaller than ours) with relatively minor renovations, IMO.

That appears to be where Josh is concentrating — game day experience — which makes perfect sense to me. He’s got a good football team to get people in the stadium and you don’t want to blow it with the new ticket buyers by them have a poor experience at the game. I can’t imagine a fan saying “good game, no big issues getting concessions, sound and scoreboards were great, but I don’t think I’ll go back cuz of all that grass behind the end zone.” Donors are more likely to pony up when team is good and stadium is selling out.

As to temporary bleachers in that space behind the end zone that other poster brought up, could there be issues with sight lines? Too high of bleachers and you block view for some in the permanent seating and too low and can’t see much of anything sitting in the temporary seats? And do they want to deal with those in the temporary seats essentially having access to field or setting up some kind of barriers so they don’t. Seems like with all that temporary bleachers could look worse that green space or kind of rinky dinky. Been a long time since I’ve been to game, so just spit balling here.

Fill the stadium consistently then the horseshoe will be taken care of. BB is investing the energy to make us have a good product

We have had good teams in the last 25 years but nothing consistent to build the home crowd like basketball. BB could change that
