As others have already mentioned, this loss (assuming he doesn’t come back) is more about the feels than the actual talent loss. McCray was good, and he is certainly not a loss any team “wants” to happen, but we have RBs for days that are going to take carries from him. Honestly… better RBs than him.

One thing is for sure: When we lose a guy to the portal of the caliber of McCray these days, it’s nice knowing that it’s not because of our dumpster fire of a program.

I find that statement about viewing himself as a backup running back really odd. I've never heard of a player say that before. The video above doesn't have that quote. Feels like a mistype by the reporter or misspoke by Bielema. Even if it were true, he's essentially achieving that goal as a backup RB here at Illinois.
I interpreted that as he saw his role at Illinois as a backup and wants to be the #1 option somewhere.

Yeah, Bret's not shy about how he sees the RB room. While pretty much every team uses a rotation of guys, can understand why someone would want to be at the top of that rotation.

I'll set the bar - I'm expecting 5-8 players to hit the portal and Illinois brings in 1-3 players.
Got some clues from Bret's presser yesterday. I'm going to take a stab at which positions we will look to the portal for based on priority

- OL - Number 1 by far on this list. Seems like we're set on our top 6 of Davis, Gesky, Kreutz, Henderson, Priestly, Hansen. Still have major depth issues - a bunch of our young guys that were supposed to be depth missed time this spring. I'd love to add 2 guys if possible.
- Nose Tackle depth since Edwards isn't coming back
- Maybe a depth WR (gut feeling, even though I like a lot of the guys we have)
- Punter depth (Bret's words)

We don’t need depth guys at nt or wr.

I think one important aspect of the Josh transfer is he is a really good football player. On most Illinois football teams he’s one of our best players. However, at the current state of Illini football, he has to transfer out to get the playing time he wants.

Good players are no longer leaving to play on better teams. Good players are transferring to find playing time.

Well, I think the Spring roster was 117 and they need to get it down to 105 for the Fall, right?

there will be a lot of pwo's either transferring down a division or two, or just hanging up the cleats and paying more attention in class

That’s about what Bret is thinking in terms of additions … I won’t comment on guys leaving but I know of several …

He wants a backup Punter … #1 on the list …
with a hard 105 roster limit, wont we have quite a few pwo's leaving the program ?
