Illini Golf 2025-2026

It really was an excellent showing...In our big events this year we have absolutely held our own without ever fully in the running for the title. Solo 3rd here is fantastic and the way we did it again with contributions from all over the place highlights the depth of this team. Southern Highlands is a world class track that can eat up players, average score this tourney was over 74, so -4 is nothing to turn your nose up at. Lots more golf to come in a short amount of time but this has to be encouraging for the boys.

What a showing for Trey this week. Was a huge recruit coming out of Virginia and winning a battle for a guy that is atop 15 player in his class and from the south against major high level schools is massive for Small. Had a really solid if not spectacular freshman year making all big 10 and this year has leaped forward. So consistent in matches, had the least amount of bogeys in the field(did have two doubles so...). Went toe to toe with several of the best players in the nation. Ryan also was impressive this week, fought to a top-20. He is gonna need to keep this form as he is right on the bubble of the PGA U. Also, he is stepping into that senior leader role in terms of his play, no idea what type of teammate he is, and is fueling this spring so far. So much depth in this squad, Dane is another who was tremendous this week. Important for him because the PGA U is a two year running total and top 10s at places like this add up.

looking ahead we've got two weeks before our next match and it doesn't get much easier Pauma Valley Invitational, another Robert Trent Jones Sr course. Field is stacked, 1 UVA, 3 Florida, 6 LSU, 10 Texas Tech, 11 Ok St, 13 MIss, 17 Georgia Tech, 18 Tennessee, 25 San Diego St. Gonna be fun.

Curious: do you think Coach or team ever check out this here site? Doubt it, but might be good for morale now and then with 100% positive posts and support. Golf is weird, a good walk spoiled, according to Sam Twain. But I love it.

Go Illini!

I quickly switch to golf after that basketball effort (?) against Wisconsin today.

Pauma Valley starts Monday. Same six Illini. Scoreboard. Hope for another great effort from the team. Go Max and everybody.

NOAA says heat advisory, high of 91, sunny, low wind today in Pauma Valley. 96 tomorrow.

Gee, sure is a bit different here in northern Illinois.

Get hot Illini. But keep cool.

The opening hole, which is actually the 10th hole for the members, is a 398 yard par 4 and so far only has 1 birdie on it. Illinois, georgia tech and Ok st are the only teams as of yet to play it at even, combined +24 for the field right now. Crazy.

And of course, Evan Wilson, playing as an independent records the best score -3...our only player under par.

tough day, nobody was hot for us. wwe were -2 through 11 and gave by 5 strokes from then on. Was hoping we could sneak in under par and go low today. Big time lack of birdies today. Second to last in the field. That is a hard way to go low. We did make the most pars of any team.

well, nobody played terrible either so it is possible several guys could get hot. That is what we need to get a good result.

Good start so far, taking advantage of the earlier tee time. Freddie is -3 thru 7, team is -5 on the day so far and currently tied with Virginia and LSU at seventh.

lets close it out, what a 9 for freddie, cool 30 never hurt anybody. Need two of Max, Trey and Ryan to fight this round and keep the bottom scores even or better.

Tennessee fell back, they were are -17 when I checked earlier but are now -11. Florida looks like they have the best chance but anything can happen. Could be an interesting finish.

Good to see Ethan stack some low scores, hopefully he can build on this!

What a round today by Freddie! that bogey at the last has to stick a bit because he was bogey free at that point, clean cards are so hard to come by. But that was exactly what we needed from somebody.

Alright, really surprised at the falter by Trey, on the last 4 holes he was 5 over. Did not see that coming, I actually do wonder if he wore down, not likely but 2 doubles after cruising during the 1st 14 with only one bogey is kinda weird.

go out tomorrow and do this again but clean up the final two counters and see where we land.

Illini finished T6, decent finish considering their start and right in line with Virginia and Oklahoma State. Ethan finished T5, Dane had a solid final day to get to the top ten, while Freddie struggled after a great round on Tuesday.

Quick turnaround for the boys as they play in Eugene next week, great opportunity for Max to regain form in the PNW. Much easier field, as #48 Cincinnati is the next-highest ranked team.

This is pretty darn interesting. Max a top 50 player in the nation is out of the lineup. Wonder the parameters around that. He has been off his top game the entire spring so far. Maybe this is the refresh he needs.

Thankfully weather looks good for this one in Oregon, right at 60. This should be a tourney we are able to win if we play our game. No let down here.

Cool, highs 60ish but 90% chance of rain tomorrow in Eugene, NOAA says.
