Illini Golf 2025-2026

The boys have played well the opening two rounds but are just getting outdone by a couple of fantastic performances so far. Mizzy's score is particularly impressive. We will see if they can hold it together, along with others, for 3 straight rounds. I feel like we will because everybody is playing decent.

We need two to go low here. Maybe if we repeat -10 today we are in there, but I am thinking -12/-13 is probably the target. It is wild how we stumbled out of the gate in this one, Trey and Max opened with three straight bogeys. They have recovered but it did suppress the total score. if we can get that 4th score at -2 and then go from there we might just out last these guys. Gonna take some great play. In reality I would think if we are gonna make a move on first we need a couple -5s and just blitz today. So far we been more of the steady train coming down the tracks.

as soon as I post that each of the 4 scorers on the team bogey

Illini in the lead, one stroke over Mizzou and Xavier. Dujuan tied for the individual lead at -8, making a strong case to be on the roster. Depth is unreal this year.

Side note: Xavier's assistant coach is former Illini Tyler Goecke, who also had a few starts on the PGA Americas tour this summer. Link

Two back from Xavier with a couple holes to play. Lots of pars in the back nine...

Slow start, fine showing overall.

I say go with Snyman, Turnell, Herendeen, Voois, Marrion at Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational Oct. 18-20 (last outing of the fall).

Snyman and Turnell really deserve it. Be interesting to see if they can repeat.

What do you think?

Xavier held off the Illini to win the Moraine Intercollegiate by three strokes. Illinois finished second, one stroke ahead of Missouri.

Dujuan, competing as an individual, finished T2 with a -7. Five Illini finished in the top 20.

Quick turnaround, as the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational starts Saturday in Mississippi, with a stronger field led by Ole Miss. The Illini played here last fall as well.

I would say yes on all five. Dujuan earned a start, let's see how he handles the pressure of being on the roster. Lots of depth on this roster, need to figure out who you can rely on come May.

I found last year's Fallen Oak (link below). Jackson won the individual, Max and Trey finished in the top ten. Should be a good test, Ole Miss will be tough to beat.

2024 Fallen Oak

Thanks for the link. Jake played as an individual. Hope Illinois gets to enter individual(s) this time.

solid effort, just faltered a hair down on the back. Dane with 3 bogeys in his last 4 hurt for sure. Also, Ryan not being able to keep the good play for all three rounds is a bit of a pattern. I am sure he is disappointed he didn't have a better showing. Still overall 2nd is nothing to sneeze at even it this wasn't a top shelf field. these are decent teams for sure.

I would be surprised if there isn't a play-in midweek for the 5th spot. Dane has been solid if not spectacular so far this year. Dujuan playing as individual and not counting for the team is a very different dynamic in team golf. Small will for sure take this result into account but it will not be he deciding factor. Some teams have rules that if you finish in the top 5, or win, that you auto qualify for a spot. Not sure at all how Small handles his choices. Would love to hear.

Yes, there's a "different dynamic". Different pressure between playing for a team win (the team counts on you) and playing as an individual. Still there's plenty of pressure for the individual to do his very best so he can move up to the top 5.

I trust Coach Small.

Dujuan has been very feast-or-famine so far:
OFCC: 76-66-75
Windon: 68-75-79
Moraine: 69-66-71

Five solid rounds, four that were 75+. If you trust your other four to be consistent, he could be an enticing 5th. Tough call here - you want him to get more consistent but you also want him to get the experience of team golf. Coach has an interesting decision to make.

I think this is still the strongest lineup, last tourney wasn't bad or anything just couldn't quite get over the hump. I will say Snyman would be enticing with those low scores getting posted.

Illini golf reported on 10/15; Golfweek survey by Small's peers reported 10/10.

Jake and Ethan will compete as individuals at the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Oct 20-21, which overlaps the rest of the team at Fallen Oak. Good to see Coach getting all the guys valuable tourney time, hoping for both of them to get back on track soon!

Golfweek 2025 Survey also asked coaches - 150 men's, fewer women's - a few quesions: match play vs stroke, rotation vs permanent NCAA Championship site, best ranking service (Golfstat won! It doesn't even do rankings anymore, as far as I can tell) ...

Golfweek isn't free. If you're interested and haven't read the survey, just go to Illinois athletics/golf and Mike Small story; then click 2025 Golfweek Survey. Free.

Interesting.
