Illini in the Pros (Basketball)

IMO, there should be summer league BEFORE the nba draft.

Take ESPN’s prospect rankings or whatever, and split them up into a bunch of teams. And yes, also include the g league guys.

Good idea but I like the idea of teams blowing picks or finding gems. Not sure Caleb Wilson stays at 4 post summer league. I personally would take him at #2 after summer league.

A lot of those Clippers fans hadn’t seen Keaton play until Summer League Game 1
A large number of NBA "fans" want explosive althetes only. They dont understand the benefit or the game of a guy who can control tempo and get by his man that way. They consider it an "old man's game" and cant appreciate it no matter what.

Keaton does so many things at an exceptional level that he doesn't really need above the rim explosiveness to be effective. He fakes out so many guys on his drives with pass fakes, crossovers, step-throughs, change of direction. All of that while being a very effective distributor and shooter from any distance means he doesn't need to overpower people with dunks or elite speed (even though he is fairly quick).

Keaton Wagler with the free extra step on drives in the NBA will be unfair

You’ve perfectly described Colon Cowturd.
He’s gotten somewhat better in recent years. But yeah, moronic rants about “only liking power dunks” and the like; pretty much encapsulates what you’re talking about.

I think there are multiple issues with that idea.
One issue would be participation. I can’t imagine Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer, or Wilson would have played. (Possibly several others)
What would they have to gain? They don’t have a contract yet. They wouldn’t even do individual workouts with all who inquired. There is too much to lose. Who would accept that type of injury risk before signing?
The point of summer league is to get new and emerging players on the court with guys they will be playing alongside when it matters, get a longer look at guys you’ve signed on two way deals, try out fringe NBA talents, and get some work in with their coaching staff.
A pre- draft summer league accomplishes none of those things.

I think it was pretty clear that the 3 headed monster of guards would be Wagler / Acuff / Brown. Maybe you could throw Flemings in there, but it was pretty clear that was the top 3. And up until the end, there was talks of the Clippers deciding between Wagler and Brown.

I wanted to compare Wagler’s best game, to the others:

Acuff best game — 26pts, 0rebs, 5ast, 5TOs, on 9/18 shooting and 2-6 from 3.

Brown best game — 20pts, 1reb, 3ast, 2TO, on 6/12 shooting, 3-6 from 3. (The thing about this game is he only played 20 minutes, so it was a great scoring rate which lots of people were pointing out)

Wagler best game — 26pts, 4reb, 2ast, 4TO, on 9/19 shooting and 2-7 from 3.

…..

The part that’s most notable for me, is that those guys had at least one really bad game just like Keaton.

Acuff worst game — 12pts, 1reb, 4ast, 5TO, on 4/14 shooting and 0-4 from 3.

Mikel Brown worst game — 14pts, 2rebs, 4ast, 2TOs, on 3/15 shooting and 2/10 from 3.

Wagler worst game — 7pts, 2reb, 1ast, 1TO, on 1/7 shooting and 1-5 from 3.

…..

Yet the outrage seems to be far more about Keaton than any of those guys.
