Illini in the Pros (Basketball)

Haha wow. They need a young coach not an old head.
Show me a coach who is past his prime and is out of touch with today's NBA...... "hold my beer"- Ty Lue.
People treating a guy I watched as a player in the NBA like he's Hubie Brown

How to tank and not get fined.
Yeah absolutely not tanking. No reason to as @Fly Illini Fly! pointed out.

There has been speculation Lue is trying to get fired so he can go coach a contender but I find it far-fetched that there's some contender out there waiting to snap him up.

He's just a guy whose used to coaching the LeBrons, Kyries, Kawhis and Hardens of the world. He puts a lot of stock in vets and is not willing to trust a rookie to win him games, even to the point where he'll ignore both statistical evidence and the evidence of his own eyes. I went back and checked, and he's literally never coached a team where a rookie, or even a player under 22 years old, got anywhere near Keaton's minutes. The closest were 23 yr old Kyrie in Lue's 1st season with Cleveland and 22 yr old Zubac his first season with the Clippers. Both players had 3 years in the league under their belt by the time Lue was their coach.

It's also possible that Lue will grow to trust Keaton. The guy's just never been in this position as a coach before. I have to think if he doesn't figure this out there will be friction with the front office. The FO certainly knows that Wagler's success is pivotal for the franchise after losing all those draft picks.

There’s also speculation that Jeff Van Gundy likes Keaton more than Lue ever did.

Guys it's very important to understanding the Clippers and the situation Wagler finds himself in that because of the NBA's punishment for the Kawhi salary cap scandal, the Clippers do not have the right to their own first round pick this year or next, and via various trades and pick swaps have only 3 first rounders total until 2033.

They are catastrophically screwed and will be fighting with one arm tied behind their backs until Wagler is 30 if he stays there.

It's a historically unique situation. Bad for Keaton in the sense that it's depressing and fraught, potentially good in the sense that no cavalry is coming to take his minutes.

I'm not convinced this is as catastrophic as some people say. They still have the same salary cap as everyone else. Draft picks are great because they're cheap when they're good. But they're still going to be able to go out and get free agents to fill up the cap and still be able to put together a good team.

In the current NBA you pretty much never just straight sign a star player into open cap space anymore, everything is a sign-and-trade involving draft picks and often multiple teams.

I would have a devil of a time explaining to you why, the current CBA is maddeningly complex, but it is the current practical reality.

It's not like they're not going to be able to field an NBA-caliber team. But in terms of any kind of contention, they are in a disastrous situation, the worst in the league by a country mile (it's not the Bulls anymore!).

At the end of the day it's all not THAT relevant to Wagler's immediate growth and development. He's a top draft pick, they are invested in him being good, he'll play. But they don't have tanking-type incentives.

Clickbait and nothing more. This person is somehow basing it on how bad OKC will apparently be because of how injured they are right now.

Wut?

It's based on the fact that OKC own the right to swap firsts with the Clippers for 2027 (from 2019 Paul George trade). Obviously, if the Clippers get the 1st pick (projected right now because they are the worst record in the NBA), OKC would exercise that right.
