Illini Track & Field, Cross Country 2026

I've mentioned that for the last 12 hours. Humphries was the #1 Pentathlon in the country and she doesn't score a point. No points in the triple jump and Illinois had 3 finalist. No points in the pole vault. All that being said they will still finish in the Top 4 and bring a trophy home. I think they can do better in outdoors because they will have some very good sprinters available.
Humphries was disqualified in the 800 meters (in the pentathlon). Not sure how that happens. She must have interfered with another runner.

The Men's track program has completely imploded
The mens team was always go take a little longer to be competitive because of their maturity and lack of depth. Coach P brought in highly regarded recruits for the womens team in his early years. The women can rely on field events but the men don't have anything to rely on. I believe they need to move on from Coach Small as sprinter coach and NIL is definitely playing a factor in the sprint and track events.

Illinois women will definitely finish in the Top 3 but can they hold off Washington which is second with 66 points. Illinois has 73. Washington can get major points in the 800, 1500, 5000 meter races. Oregon is 3rd but well behind Illinois and Washington.

Think we can win it if our triple jumpers, 800m runner, and relay teams come thru. Star long jumper Sophia Beckmon needs to have a big day - she is in the 100m finals and the 4 x 100 relay. Big surprise is Grace Kombetto, who ran the fastest 800 meters in qualifying yesterday.

Idk if I have ever heard of such a thing. That is wild.

Any mention of how our vaulters did?
Men placed 6, 8, 9, 10 and 16. Winning height was 5.72!! Cody Johnston placed 6th at 5.52 jumping with a broken hand. Women placed 5 and 6. jumping 4.33. Winning jump was 4.83!!!

Congrats to the Women and everyone who place. I have to say, I find our roster construction baffling - to not have enough sprinters to field a relay team is pretty amazing.
I think it is less about the number than the quality. They could've filled a team. They had teams entered in the 4x400 and 4x100 but scratched them. They don't have 4 that are good enough to place high, so why waste the legs of people that are going to be doing other events, like Beckman, for a few points that isn't going to put you over the top.
