PSU over the Illini today, 25-22, -22, -19.

Several players out with injuries from what I've read on Volley Talk. Nunge, Hinton, Swanson, and Sakoda all missed this weekend's matches.

Mosher, normally a setter but pressed into service as an OH, led the team today in kills today with 11.

Hinton is back. Actually played fairly well vs. Penn St.

We're in an interesting part of the schedule. For the next 4 weeks the Illini play a Wed/Thur match and a Sat/Sun match. 5 of the 8 matches will be on BTN.

Tomorrow's match is against Rutgers at Huff, 7pm on ESPNU

I made some improvements to the site so it should load much faster now: https://nova-vmss.onrender.com/

Here's the latest for the B1G teams:

Illinois swept by Minnesota, 25-19, -23, -23.

I feel like we'd have a better chance at winning these close sets if we didn't have so many service errors, 14 for the Illini and just 2 for Minnesota.

So true. We appeared the better team. Just too hard to overcome that big of a service error differential. OSU next. I’m predicting we win in 4.

I was at the game with my wife and folks. Quite a few of our service errors were... not close. Made for a frustrating match to watch with the close set losses in particular. I wondered if we were a little too aware of Minnesota's good offense and pressing just a tad too hard each serve/swing. That said we did have quite a few aces as well, so it paid off to some extent—just not quite enough.

Sadly, it's a staple of Tamas' offense. Check the stats. This year we have had 209 as opposed to our opponent's 131.

What are our ace numbers this season? Service aces & errors are kind of like made and missed threes in basketball - it's more useful to look at the ratio (akin to 3P%) than just looking at the errors (missed 3s).

Not a perfect comparison because the point of serving hard is also to get your opponent out of system, so not every "successful" hard serve will show up as an ace... but the main point is, looking at service errors alone would be like judging a basketball team just on missed threes.

We have 111 aces, 3rd best in the BIG, but our 209 errors is the worst in conference. For comparison, Iowa has 110 aces but only 139 errors. (source)

The other day I googled service error rates and found How Many Serves Should A Volleyball Team Miss? They say the best teams typically have a service error percentage of 8-12%. We're at 14.4% errors for the season, 21.2% yesterday.

I agree we have to serve aggressively and try to take our opponents out of system, but we have too many bad misses.

Thanks. Makes a lot of sense. In basketball terms we're a team without a great inside presence, so we rely a lot on the three... but don't shoot the three very well.

Service errors come up often at Networkers events. Tamas claims to be fine with them if they are the result of aggressive serving. If they are to happen, he prefers that they be long, as opposed to, short. Per his reading of stats, aggressive serving correlates strongly with winning regardless of errors.
