Illini Women's Basketball

Its easy to see ceiling of current roster. Too small. Lack of front court athleticism. JMO Play high ceiling McDAA ASAP to develop her quickly and keep her from portal. Otherwise we are stuck as ,500 b10 record. The addition of USC and UCLA raises the B10 bar.

FYI. Oregon State affiliated with West Coast Conference for now. Only sport that is affiliated with Mountain West is football since WCC doesn’t have football. Baseball is currently independent I believe.

My bad I did mess that one up. Oregon St just got tore apart in multiple sports in the last few days

Not sure why program making money or not would have anything to do with NIL since it is paid by donors/collectives not schools.
It was a few comments tied together. Programs making money or not have nothing to do with NIL which I am aware.

Hidden money comment is because the Stanford lady was offered a certain amount from another "NIL" "team" "donor" while she was on Stanford roster and not in the portal. Same thing happens with guys, heard there is someone waiting to enter portal if gets $1.5 million.

Hypothetically, if both the men's women's teams have a MCDAA coming into the season. Are we saying that we would would be "fine" with the women's team player coming off the bench, yet infuriated that the men' s MCDAA was coming off the bench???

No one is guaranteed a role in the rotation, but if you bench MCDAA talent, it may not return soon... There are only 24 of these each year...keep the door open...

It's true Bueckers started her freshman year but that's not typically the case at UConn. Geno hates starting freshmen.

Take a look at her UConn classmate, HS All-American Mir McLean. She played in 24 of 30 games, that season, started none. That's far more typical.
Ashlynn Shade, Freshman, started 33 games out of 38 she appeared in for UConn. Big East Freshmen of the Year 2023-2024. Averaged 11pts/gm, 3rd on team pts per game.

Oh, I know. She ended up having to start because Geno had 6, 6, players go down with season-ending injuries.

I didn't say he Never starts freshman.

Further to my most recent post...

I didn't say he Never starts freshman. I've been a devoted fan of the UConn Women's team for 29 years & counting.

The point remains, as another poster said & my OP tried to illustrate, not all McD A-A's are created equal. Both Paige and Clark are transcendent talents. They started as freshmen. McLean, another A-A, did not. Shade did too, under very unusual circumstances.

If/when Coach Green gets in an A-A, the coach will determine their role. Obviously.

Celia Riviere 6'3" Juco player paid a visit to campus.
Three to four portal players coming in over next two weeks.
Staff working hard.
12.5 pts. 6.8 rbs. in 22.5 mins/game. only 7 total blk shots all year against Juco competition. Similar stats as Hobby but Hobby was playing in the ACC. She might be alright as a backup. Hope we can do better. Maybe the coaches see a bright future for her.

We are a .500 B10 team. When we are lucky enough to sign a McDAA (once every 10 years) it is in our interest to start them and play them a lot as they are more talented than the current roster and will maximize our chance to win. It will also help keep them out of transfer portal. When we are UCONN and recruit multilple McDAA every year we can make them wait on the bench :)

I have no idea about what numbers are circulating for various players in the transfer market, but saw this...

"One college basketball source told the [San Francisco] Chronicle (Kiki Iriafen) was receiving offers upward of $700,000 in NIL money throughout the Stanford season from other collectives."

"Kiki Iriafen enters transfer portal." San Francisco Chronicle, 4/12/24.
To me I’m skeptical of an offer like that being true…That sounds like Maybe Cooper Flagg money.Caitlin Clark is going to be paid like 78 thousand this year..From what I’ve read the whole men’s team gets 1.5million so…

Man that would be AWESOME if we landed those recruits..Talk about putting butts in the seats..,I’m sure that would also probably cause a march on the treasure trove of instate talent..But hey I’m sure we will never frown on a national footprint..

Every situation is different. LSU gymnast Liv Dunne has made $3-4 million on NIL deals. Caitlin Clark I believe has a valuation over $3 million and will continue to grow.

The WNBA max is north of $240k, rookie deals top out around range you put. Number of ladies can make more on NIL deals than what the professional level pays.

I’m thinking maybe 16-20 women may get NIL packages like that a year and I’m emphasizing maybe because this year is magical.I do hope the women continue to grow but our Illini are there yet at least on the women side yet..
