Illini Women's Basketball

I’m thinking maybe 16-20 women may get NIL packages like that a year and I’m emphasizing maybe because this year is magical.I do hope the women continue to grow but our Illini are there yet at least on the women side yet..

The top ladies have multiple NIL offers is why they rack in so much $. Instead of 1-2 smaller deals they could have 5-8 that pay way more. Our ladies get a free ride and still make some $ in the NIL. They aren't making top level money but are still more likely to have a choice of eating steak over Ramen anytime they choose.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy women get let’s say more than a stipend. In college myself while playing basketball we did have basically grant monies and very slack part time jobs that eased financial burdens. It’s a full time job being a student athlete for sure. I’m definitely hoping the ICON collective will help the program upgrade the talent for the immediate future.

Every situation is different. LSU gymnast Liv Dunne has made $3-4 million on NIL deals. Caitlin Clark I believe has a valuation over $3 million and will continue to grow.

The WNBA max is north of $240k, rookie deals top out around range you put. Number of ladies can make more on NIL deals than what the professional level pays.
I think Dunne and Clark are bad examples because a lot of their major NIL deals are independent from their schools (like how people thought NIL was going to be). The Iowa and LSU collectives aren’t the ones sending them the bulk of their NIL haul.

That is why I put every situation is different in the first sentence. The comment was directed towards someone that doubted players get huge offers. The whole free agency is just starting in the ladies game. Between collectives and NIL it will continue to grow for all ladies in P5 schools. It also depends on the school, sport, athlete, etc. We are just at the tip of the iceberg and a great situation to have with the ladies now having more options than ever.

In the hunt for Divine Bourrage who is the #4 recruit in the 2025 class

#6 recruit Darianna Alexander just dropped her list from 15 to 3.....local teams Cincinnati and Ohio State plus ILLINOIS
And Alexander is staying home and chose Cincinnati

Throw in Lucy Olsen from Nova is transferring to Iowa

Not the best news day. Hopefully get some good news on our front soon

Well theres a player in Oak forest who left LSU that i'm sure would help our backcourt with size and shooting....Janae Kent come on down...The family can watch you get a whole lot of minutes at the 2 and 3 while challenging for a B1G title...I know Berry Wallace may be similar, but her and a mobile DEFENSIVE big seems like all we need for next yearand beyond...Bye the way keep them tabs on Alexander..She just might have a change of heart next year.

WNBA pays poorly which is why Brittany Griner was playing in Russia during off season. Caitlin is only female basket ball player getting national endorsement contract with State Farm, Nike, Bose, Buick, Gatorade etc.

We are a .500 B10 team. When we are lucky enough to sign a McDAA (once every 10 years) it is in our interest to start them and play them a lot as they are more talented than the current roster and will maximize our chance to win. It will also help keep them out of transfer portal. When we are UCONN and recruit multilple McDAA every year we can make them wait on the bench :)
I approve this message

I mean yeah, I get what you are saying.
But you’re speaking in absolutes.

1.) Not every single McDAA is created equal. I realize we’re talking upper echelon/highest caliber players. BUT They aren’t all automatically better right out of the gate. (certainly not at all positions)
They’re mostly next level. But some ARE overhyped.

2.) I’m sure prime time, playing time would go a long way to keeping someone out of the portal. But it is certainly no guarantee. See Adam Miller.

Aaliyah Nye in the portal with a no contact. This from the men’s recruiting thread. 40% from 3 last year. 45% her jr year. Wow.

If we could just get the 2 Illinois girls Alyssa Latham and Janae Kent. That would set us up for the future too. I hope we targeted them.
Wow!I saw some of Lathams highlights and i love Kents shooting and with us already being ranked without them,it could be a lure to these two ..Of course if we did get these two ,no doubt we could go right to being a top ten team...Shoot we might become one without..It would be awesome if they came home to help start that national title chase. It really could happen.Where is ICON collective when we need them. All the coaches and the AD should help recruit them because for certain that 8 to 10 thousand seats could be filled with a team like that..

I was hoping we would have a transfer committed by now. Is this a bad sign that we don't? We're considered a top 25 team and we have plenty of playing time available for a big. We play in the Big Ten and I assume we have a reasonable amount of NIL money. Md has brought in a 16 ppg scorer, MSU a 15 ppg,
OSU 2 14 ppg, PSU a 15 ppg, NU a 17 ppg, and Purdue a 10 ppg. I hope we're next and I hope it's worth the wait!

The flip side of this is that some of those other B1G teams lost a lot in the portal and to graduation while we really haven’t. We only really lost our starting big and first off the bench.

It’s hard to get people to transfer somewhere to be a depth piece, and from what I understand it seems like every program in the NCAA is looking for a veteran big in the portal.

Latham is going to Tennessee

Recent visitor Celia Riviere is going to West Virginia

Agree with Illini Indycar Fan 100% on his response

Most coaches can bring players into a program. Few coaches build a culture and Green is looking for talent and character.

It was addressed before but we have 4 starting positions locked up with heavy minutes. Still looking for a few big and combo guard that can contribute right away. Portal is still open and plenty of talent available

How many scholarships do we have left to hand out for next year? And aren't there usually more players in the portal than there are available scholarships? Don't we desperately need a bench? Seems like there are hundreds of players in need of a place to land, regardless of NIL money or starters' minutes.

Mentioned earlier Latham to Tennessee

Kent to Texas A&M
Not surprised. Loyalty to your state doesn’t seem to be a factor anymore. Although Caitlin and JuJu were. Hayven Smith is our only in state player. It would be nice to be able to get a top Illinois high schooler every year. Maybe winning will cure that.
Anyone have any info on Aaliyah Nye? She played here before and I believe she is Coleman Hawkins girlfriend. That was alluded to in the men’s recruiting thread. She would definitely be in the rotation.

We have 5 scholarships available. We somewhat desperately need a big or two. Someone who can post up and also be a rim protector. Our bench with some likely improvement from Dolan, Bolin, and Allen along with Wallace (if she’s not starting) could be more than adequate. Shoup Hill and Smith could also help. Another ball handler is needed when Cook or Bryant are out. I’m of the opinion that another GOOD player regardless of position could really lift this team to the next level.

We have 10 roster spots filled with the two incoming FR. They can have a max of 15 spots but doubt they want to fill them up. Tend to run on 13-14

We lose 5 Seniors next season(not including any transfer portal losses). First thing is bringing in talent that mixes with our current roster. If they have multiple years of eligibility all the better.

And aren't there usually more players in the portal than there are available scholarships?

This is the first offseason where the portal is starting to reflect that of the men's basketball. "Free agency" is officially happening in the women's game.

We have 4 starters and 2-3 players who can contribute right away off the bench. Definitely need a starting 5 and the staff is fully aware
