When someone asks a question like this it becomes my mission to find an answer. Which usually involves the arduous task of typing some words into a Google search. And usually failing to find an answer. But this time, I didn't have to go far, though. It happened just last year (I don't know if there are other examples as I stopped as soon as I found one). Iowa 112-106 Michigan State (Feb 25, 2023) albeit, it did go into OT. But, it was almost done in regulation as the score at the end of regulation was 101-101

For sure. I also wouldn't be surprised going forward as well if we see some new wrinkles-pressing a little bit or some more matchup zone

What about hard hedging ball screens? Coleman is certainly mobile enough to do recover and I do feel like it disrupted Young’s flow in the Maryland game and the one or 2 times we did it in the Michigan game.

Just feel like Coleman is wasted as a defender sitting in deep drop and then having to body up bigger more physical post players.

Scouts are going to adore what TSJ put on film last night.

Bottled up a smaller and quicker guy then bottled up a bigger and longer guy, both of whom are good and crafty playmakers. That's what the NBA is looking for.

We put our defenders on an island all the time, and the only person we've got who can thrive in that scenario is TSJ.
Coleman can survive in that scenario but sometimes chooses not to do so.

I would love to see them press a bit just to at least slow a team down in running their offense. Using their length would be a strength.

Is there a way to know what the Kenpom score would be if our defense was even decent - like, say, 50th?

If this team played even decent defense, they would be right up there with Purdue, Houston, and UConn at the top of the pecking order in college basketball.
TL;DR 7th/8th

Loosely the way the ranking works is it subtracts the AdjD from AdjO and ranks teams based on the difference.
50th is about 100 AdjD, so we'd gain ~2 pts overall for +25.32, which would put us 7th/8th between Duke & Alabama

There's more complexity to his math, but that's a decent ballpark.

I do understand Minny hit some incredible shots, but in the end, I can't accept that as an excuse. There were times last night where I was thinking to myself how god-awful this defense is.

Unless something improves, the hope is this offense keeps them in games, and then get key stops at the end of games.

When individual players post up the Illini, I would love to see someone sneak in there with a double team at times. Good things can happen at times: steal, TO, forced shot. Not all the time but sometimes.

Watching the BU & Coleman Pressers and all I can think about is, What's in the bag?

Man.... everything.

Step-back jumpers, Euro-steps, 28 foot three pointers, crossover dribble-drive, spin move, floaters, leaners... but no more pump fakes.

Coleman, that is. Not sure what Brad has left in the bag at this point. He tries any of that, he may not be able to comb his hair for 4 days.

As exciting as the offense was last night the lack of defense seemed to really take the energy out of the crowd and the team too. Every time people started to get loud Minny went down and scored and everyone was back to sitting on their hands. It was weird watching the body language of the team between plays and thinking to myself that they almost looked like a team that was losing by 8 instead of leading. I think giving up that many points can have an affect on a player, especially when they have some pride on the defensive end.

I was at the game last night and have watched almost every game this season. I have one honest question in regards to how to play defense. (We do this also).

A defender, particularly in the lane, is planted. The offensive player gets the ball and "booty balls" him down closer to the basket. Each dribble the offensive player bounces the defensive player back and each time the defender has his feet planted but is scooted backwards. (There was one play by I think Dainja, that he "flopped" or at least went down after the back up, no call, led to an easy lay-up).

How is anyone supposed to play defense against this type of offense?

Lastly, I probably shouldn't have said booty balls!

Will take an 8 pt win over a desperate, pretty decent Minny team any day. If it was 62-70, most would call it a good win. They made some contested 3s off the bounce, but this offense will be able to overcome an opponent's good shooting night. IMO there has been stints of promising intensity against Iowa & last night. Dain had a great physical presence on Payne that helped out Coleman hopefully he can bring it every night.

7/8 from three in the second half after they were on fire in the first half. Sometimes you just have to tip you cap. How many teams in college basketball would have been able to beat a team shooting like that last night?
Meanwhile last night Maryland 2/22 from 3, a lot of them wide open from doubling Reese in the post. NW was 2/13 and the BTN studio guys tried to give credit to both teams for playing such good defense.

You either throw a double at Marcus or threaten a double and hope the on-ball defender stays planted and doesn't fall for his crafty tricks in the paint

Yep, but that scouting report may need updated soon as he murdered the double teams last night. He's not afraid of it and has done a better job making quick decisions the past few games. He's also coming along as a passer, in general. His assist rate has started to climb dramatically the last few games and he's in elite territory nationally with his turnover rate.

Just admit our defense is bad. I've seen from people the excuse that teams are making "ridiculous" shots, but you can't keep saying that when it is becoming a trend. Brad and his incompetent defensive guru Hamer have given up on the defense as have the players. Let's just hope we can outscore teams in the tournament.

I have good vibes for the tournament, but I know our defense will lose us games

Minnesota didn't hit 14 threes because our defense sucks.
