Illinois 116, Ottawa 65 (Exhibition) Postgame

I think as the season goes along everyone is going to realize that Domask was probably the most underrated player in the transfer portal. He was a much better pick up for Brad and the Illini than anyone gave him credit for.
I look forward to pointing out how many more Domask jerseys start to show up at SFC throughout the season. He’s going to be an absolute fan favorite.

Fun to watch. Didn’t see a lot of unforced turnovers. Other than the first couple minutes, guys fought through screens. Way less poor shots. Lot to be excited about.

We are who we are.

We’re gonna struggle to shoot free throws. Yes, it’s gonna cost us a game or two. We aren’t going undefeated.

We’re gonna shoot decent, not great from 3, but likely better than year.

We’re gonna win more than we lose with hard nosed defense, elite rebounding, and efficient scoring around the rim.

I enjoyed it. Got the full BTN+ experience, too. For a second there I was convinced that zombies had overrun the control truck.

Also, I know everyone has said it but Domask seems to have really good vision. Looking forward to this.

So does anyone still think Goode is just a more efficient Domask?
If you are asking who shot better percentagewise for every category last season (FG, 3s, FT), then yes, Goode is still better than Domask in all of them during that time. One exhibition game this season doesn't change that fact about last season. Goode also had the rebounds per min and blocks per min advantage last season, but not the assists per min nor steals per min advantage last season, so those stats from last season didn't change due to this exhibition game this season either.

What I really liked is what appears to be a big change of approach by Domask in not trying to lead his team in scoring (which he did last year partly because he took a lot of shots). Yeah, that really wouldn't make sense this year on a much stronger team, and it absolutely looks like he has adjusted in that regard. Especially judging by the postgame interview comments that he made and his stats in the Ottawa game. For example, we had 6 guys in double figures, and Domask wasn't one of them. I compliment him on that! It was because he was busy leading the team with 6 assists. That's a big change for him and seems perfect for this team.

Goode started fantastic regarding shooting in the Ottawa game (he made every shot he took in the first 5+ mins). But Goode had a poor second half. There's lots of uncertainty on stats in small samples (like 1 game). But I loved what I saw and heard from Domask in this game. He does seem to be earning the start this season, but let's see how these guys play going forward. It will get way harder to be "efficient" against KU (for both guys), and a bunch more games will make a better sample of who all is playing the best. I just want our best players out there the most and in close games for the closing 5 mins. In other words, whatever wins.

Based on this game, 2 of our rotation players would be frosh despite all the experience.
Like the ball movement with Ty as he doesn’t seem to need the dribble like a lot of PG’s.
Don’t see how you are going to keep Amani off the floor.
If Dra can finish like that against Kentucky, we have a Belo with control.
Not convinced we have solved 3 pt shooting or FT shooting.
Harmon seems like a Grandison in that he is always in the right place but not flashy.

Just a couple of comments from watching game

Domask reminds me a little of Illinois transfer player (Bradley) Eddy(?) from abourt 8 years ago. He is the glue player we need, can do more but will make sure the team function well first. Passed up shots for other players and is a ball magnet (rebounds, loose balls).

Harris will play this year, his defense is needed for elite teams and players. Remember how big he was against UCLA and Texas. But his overall skillset isn't as refined as Langhorn. Harris has elite speed and other intagibles, needs to become better shooter and improve skillset. Think he is one year away from being more of a contributor.

Goode's shot selection was less than desired in second half. Shot a fade away three and other well defended 3's in additon to missing some open 3s. Not worried, he is our best shooter.

Having Guerrier and Harmon will help us against teams that we lost in the past in the NCAAs like Arkansas and Houston. We just didn't have the veteran tough players to match the depth of these teams. Both played well yesterday but we will really need them when teams get tougher and deeper. They are not one trick ponies, they will do all that his asked and play hard. Going to add Harris here again, as games get harder this is where you appreciate Harris' defense more.

Ty did fine but my concern is his lack of 3 point and free throw shooting. He can drive so teams can't back off him as much, but this is a concern for games that are close late in the second half. We can surround him with enough 3 point shooters (Coleman, TSJ, Goode, Domask) but what about getting fouled. It is nice having a 6-6 PG, especially against those teams that bullied our smaller guards last year. I can't recall a PG we had that can do a one step dunk like he did yesterday and rebound like him.

I think people aren’t appreciating how Ty played. Yeah he didn’t have eye popping numbers, and dear lord I hope his FT shooting gets better, but our offense looked its best when he was on the floor.

He pushed the ball up the court beautifully almost every possession. Every time he got a rebound or outlet pass his eyes were up the court looking to pass to a teammate and kept the offense moving FAST AND WITH PURPOSE which was what we needed last year.
