Going to be hard for WBB to move up even with the win, too many good teams just keep winning. Football could finish in top 25 the way the bowls are playing out, we got to win however

Just saw on the AP Poll page no poll today, gotta wait till next Monday Jan 5th.

Since no poll this week, here is the current all-time AP Poll dating back to when the poll was introduced in 1949. Currently ranked teams (as of last week) are in bold, with their most recent ranking in parentheses.

1. Kentucky - 996
2. North Carolina - 970 (#12)
3. Duke - 922 (#6)
4. Kansas - 883 (#17)

5. UCLA - 748
6. Louisville - 672 (#16)
7. Arizona - 626 (#1)

8. Indiana - 582
9. Syracuse - 550
10. Illinois - 528 (#20)
11. Michigan State - 517 (#9)
12. Purdue - 461 (#5)
13. Michigan - 459 (#2)

14. Ohio State - 448
15. Maryland - 446
16. Villanova - 443
16. Cincinnati - 443
18. Marquette - 431
19. UConn - 422 (#4)
20. Georgetown - 397
21. Oklahoma - 392
22. Iowa - 388 (#25)
23. Tennessee - 383 (#19)
24. Alabama - 378 - (#14)

24. Notre Dame - 378

- So Alabama just snuck into the all-time list last week by virtue of tying Notre Dame.
- If Gonzaga (currently #7) remains ranked the rest of the season, they will be right on the heels of catching Notre Dame and entering the all-time top 25 (they currently are at #26 with 366 appearances), and I believe they will pass them if there are 19 or 20 weeks like last year.
- Not sure how many weeks Iowa can remain ranked this year (especially after we win in Iowa City!), but they very well could pass Oklahoma and move into the #21 spot all-time.
- UConn will almost certainly pass Marquette this season and move up to #18.
- Purdue and Michigan will almost surely remain ranked all season long, so it will be kind of funny watching them remain exactly two weeks apart all year, haha.
- Surprisingly little chance for movement in the top half of the list. If Syracuse remains this bad for the next 3-4 years and we can remain a consistent top 25 team, we could move into the #9 spot!
- Lastly, let's all share a laugh that Northwestern is the lowest ranked Power Conference team, with just 18 total weeks. This puts them at #139 all-time, appearing in 1.4% of all of the AP Polls and nestled one spot behind the 5-way tie of the following powerhouses - Bowling Green, NYU, Fordham, Southern Miss and Buffalo. #114 Tulane also has twice as many appearances as the Kitties, and #102 UTEP has over three times as many appearances.

And yet they're #22 in KenPom. Meanwhile we're #8 there and #16 in AP.

lol

[I wonder whether Nebrasketball has ever been ranked in the Top 10.]
Ole Joe Cipriano's (🤌) squad got up to #8 back in '65, some 20 years before their first tournament appearance.

I know AP poll doesn't mean a ton practically speaking, but I do like the optics of 2 of our 3 losses coming from within the top 10 and all 3 coming from within the top 15.

I’m still amazed that Michigan isn’t number 1 yet. I haven’t seen much of AZ, but I’d be shocked if they have looked better than UM has.

I fully realize Michigan is #1 in NET and all/most of the metrics, but Arizona has beaten two top 10 teams (one on the road @ UConn), two other top 15 teams and another top 20 team. Michigan has not beaten any top 10 teams, a single top 15 team and two other teams in the 20-25 range

That said, if I had a vote Michigan would be my #1 because of the impressive fashion in which they've won their games since mid-November. 10 straight victories, none with less than an 18 point margin, and an average margin of 34.5

I've not followed AZ at all but am very happy to hear there is at least one other team that could beat Michigan.

And yes, despite my signature below, I am rooting for the Wildcats in any such meeting. Might be time to put another anti-Michigan pic in my avatar...

This was an interesting point, and it got me curious how the current top 25 has done against other currently ranked teams so far. So, the rankings below are current, not the ranking of the time each team played (e.g., Arizona beat #3 Florida early, but the Gators are no longer ranked).

When laid out like that, you can't really justify putting Michigan above Arizona. Don't get me wrong, Michigan looks REALLY good ... but their claim to fame as far as signature wins is Gonzaga, which just simply isn't as impressive as what Arizona has done. BTW, mistakes possible. :ROFLMAO:

A couple top 25 matchups this week that could be added to the list above.

#6 Duke at #20 Louisville
#14 Texas Tech at #7 Houston
#13 Alabama at #11 Vanderbilt
#24 SMU at #6 Duke
#16 Illinois at #19 Iowa

If we win at Iowa, we would (at least for the moment) join UConn, Duke and Arkansas as the only teams in the country with 3 wins vs. the current top 25.

Very cool, and yeah I was just going off of rankings at the time of the game (which is easier because that’s how the schedules are displayed on most sites, but less accurate as to who has played actual good/great teams).

I’m particularly interested in that Alabama vs Vanderbilt game. I feel Alabama wins that game we have a shot at jumping Vanderbilt in most metrics (and maybe the polls as well if we take care of business rest of the week).
