This was an interesting point, and it got me curious how the current top 25 has done against other currently ranked teams so far. So, the rankings below are current, not the ranking of the time each team played (e.g., Arizona beat #3 Florida early, but the Gators are no longer ranked).

When laid out like that, you can't really justify putting Michigan above Arizona. Don't get me wrong, Michigan looks REALLY good ... but their claim to fame as far as signature wins is Gonzaga, which just simply isn't as impressive as what Arizona has done. BTW, mistakes possible. :ROFLMAO:

A couple top 25 matchups this week that could be added to the list above.

#6 Duke at #20 Louisville
#14 Texas Tech at #7 Houston
#13 Alabama at #11 Vanderbilt
#24 SMU at #6 Duke
#16 Illinois at #19 Iowa

If we win at Iowa, we would (at least for the moment) join UConn, Duke and Arkansas as the only teams in the country with 3 wins vs. the current top 25.
I think you mean that #9 BYU lost to #4 UConn, 86-84.

Nicely done! Most interestingly, it confirms for me that the AP Poll is pretty darn accurate! And Georgia has a really weak schedule.

Houston, Gonzaga, BYU, Alabama, Texas Tech, all ranked ahead of us, all have less T25 wins.

It suggests to me the AP pool is extremely reactionary.

The Basket Under Review guys have started doing a weekly composite ranking. Always interesting to see the outliers between humans and computers.

RE: Nebraska and Illinois, this kind of confirms that the "computer rankings" are true efficiency metrics while the NET and especially the AP Poll are more "rewards for good resumes" ... and I am fine with both serving their different purposes!

#37
AP poll is also more of a power ranking. Hard to move down if you win.
Yep. Let's all remember that there were a lot of fans calling for #2 North Carolina to take over our #1 ranking in 2005 when we would get too-close-for-comfort road wins vs. bad teams like Iowa, Michigan and Purdue. But the fact is we had proven ourselves earlier in the year, and we kept winning ... how do you take #1 away from a #1 team that just keeps winning??

BTW, I never really thought about this before, but it was actually pretty lucky we kept our #1 ranking after losing to OSU. Don't get me wrong, I think we definitely still deserved it at 29-1, and the pollsters clearly agreed. However, #2 North Carolina beat #6 Duke on the same day we lost at OSU, and that capped off a streak of 7 straight wins for the Tar Heels, including winning 12 of 13 to end the year, with the only loss being a 1-point defeat at Duke. With how much the media used to salivate about the ACC being the clear #1 conference, I'm honestly surprised they didn't use our one loss to OSU as an excuse to bump UNC up.

#38
Yup, AP poll & NET primarily focuses on wins & losses, analytics doesn’t even consider wins vs losses (outside of the luck metric… which we have a low luck rating which means we are better than our W-L record indicates)
AP Poll specifically recent or timely wins, and NET just general wins.

#39
It should be obvious that the AP poll is just a bunch of homerism.

#40
It should be obvious that at this point in the season Nebraska is better than us. Take all of your computer rankings, post them in plain sight.
Play the game and Nebraska wins on our court. Hmmm what were the computer rankings worth?

I’d argue that they were better than us that night. Play that game 10 times and my precise calculations (/s) say we’d win 7 out of 10

#43
That is likely true, but I also think if we played UNC 10 times in 2005, we would have won 7 of those. Gotta take care of business when you have the opportunity. Hopefully, that is sinking in for these guys.

It would be nice to bring our A game every game but that just isn't reality. We played our C game, they played their A game, and Sandfort brought his A++++ game...

In a single game vacuum? I believe it’s been written that as a prediction model, it is on par with the biggest sportsbooks.

You’re correct that it doesn’t get every single game right, but over the long haul it’s been proven to correlate very strongly.

#46
It will be really interesting to see where we land if we can pick up two wins this week.

- We should definitely pass #14 Texas Tech; even if their loss at #7 Houston is not a bad one at all, it's still a loss and we already beat them.
- Either #13 Alabama or #11 Vanderbilt will pick up a loss tonight, and I think if it's Vandy, they could take a bit of a free fall for losing at home to the first ranked opponent they've played all year. After all, the pollsters dropped us from #13 to #20 for losing on a buzzer-beater to a ranked Nebraska team, and we already had two top 15 wins in our pocket compared to Vandy's zero.

We did just move up four spots for beating two teams we were heavy favorites against, so I could see us passing a few teams that are ranked ahead of us this week even if they all win against inferior opponents. Here's my back-of-the napkin guess.

Lose both this week ---> Not ranked on Monday.
Go 1-1 this week and lose at Iowa ---> Drop to #20 again.
Go 2-0 this week ---> Jump up to anywhere from #13 to possibly even the top 10.

Gramps, I obviously am not as wise or seasoned as you but I was just thinking about this. Would I rather be Illinois (#9 KP, 11-3, 2-1) or Nebraska (#20 KP, 15-0, 4-0)?

At this point in the season, I think I'm still taking us. I'm pretty high on Nebraska actually, but according to the computers (You and Grandma should get one by the way. They're neat!) we have the higher ceiling. I would expect that our record will start to coalesce with our KP ranking soon and same for Nebraska.
