Illinois 20, Maryland 17 Postgame

I am thankful we got the win and I am sure it wasn't pretty. I was forced to listen to the game on the radio, as I was in the car heading to Las Vegas.
Early in the game, the radio announcers were saying Houser was pitching the ball to the RB's rather than a straight hand off, because of his previous hand injury. Once the game got to midway through the 1st quarter, I didn't hear them mention that anymore. Did anyone notice this and did this problem resolve itself into "normal" straight hand offs as the game progressed?
Also early in the game they mentioned that Abney got helped off the field. Did he ever return to the game? I-L-L

I am totally happy with Anderson getting the touches in the 4th (and Barnett getting in there), but just wondering if Laughery is ok or if he was injured during the game today? Or maybe it just wasn't his day?
I think their defense was keying off of Laughery today.

I don't know why teams don't put two running backs in the backfield anymore? It seems that a fullback in the backfield to block would be a good thing and you can do so much miss direction, swing passes, etc.

If Illinois makes a bowl, that 3 and out from the defense in the late 3rd quarter when Maryland got the punt inside the Illini 45 might be the season’s defining moment. Forcing Maryland to punt it back was enormous. Big moment for a defense that has been behind the 8 ball a lot this season.
So why do we need to hire a new defensive coordinator next year? Seems to be working fine once Hauk left. Today was extremely impressive

Nah, don't fall into the trap of a mildly successful interim coach. Cooper is someone you never would have considered for the job otherwise. He doesn't have the resume.

Abney never came back in.

They've been working those short pitch plays in more as a way to run stretch zone plays on the same side the RB lines up in the shotgun. I don't think it had anything to do with the hand and more that they like it as a counter to how the defense is aligned.

The DC coordinator also will impact level of recruiting, a big time DC will bring better players. Cooper has much improved the D though.
