Random thoughts from a fan with somewhat-split allegiances in this game (lifelong Illini fan who attended school at SC and became a Gamecocks fan on the side):

1. I went into the game already planning to favor the Illini, but once the game had started, all doubt evaporated. It might have had something to do with the Illini playing the underdog role, but I don't think that was it. My heart naturally went with the Orange and Blue, and it was a fantastic game with an awesome outcome!

2. I lost a lot of respect for Shane Beamer after this game. I think he acted out of character, and will hopefully learn a thing or two from this ordeal, but suffice it to say I was surprised by a guy who, in many ways, I've always considered to be a class act.

3. I don't engage with the Gamecock fandom nearly as much as I do the Illini fandom, and the fallout from this game has reinforced that immensely. There are certainly a fair share of boneheads among the Illini faithful (thankfully, not many here on Loyalty, but elsewhere on the web), but my God...the absolute garbage I have seen from Gamecock fans the last couple of days has made me really not want to associate with them. (To be fair, I have seen plenty of level-headed responses from other Gamecock fans, as well, thankfully.)

I'm so sick of these abc/espn games against their darlings where the bias is so heavy from the announcers. They never once acknowledged that we controlled a great deal of the game and made everything seem like SC was either be wronged or will turn it on at any moment.
Well without there 3 best players other than Sellers I’m sure it would have been better play from them RB is very good when healthy And Kennard is best def player in country . But I see their point get injured and could cost them a career!

90% of their fanbase would take him back in a second . they’ve been on a steady decline since he left .

just now posting after digesting everything - what a game/season and time to be an Illini!

But to this comment specifically, Beamer reminds me of SEC PJ Fleck.
Or basketball's Bobby Knight. In both cases their team's fans say their coach is "passionate" and "animated". All others see them as a bully, jerk, and crybaby.

I perused the South Carolina fan board (24/7) yesterday and here are a few random thoughts:

1. The resort to violence. Bret may want to hire a bodyguard for a week or two. There were many posters who out and out wanted to punch BB in the face. And I don’t think they were being metaphorical.
2. Many not only now hate the University of Illinois (some said they previously had either favorable opinions or were neutral but now hate U of I) they also now hate the whole state of Illinois (one called it the commie state, LOL
3. The refs were in Illinois pockets, taking bribes to throw the game of course
4. Strangely enough, they were almost as critical of ESPN announcers as many on here are (including me)
5. And, of course, they had no understanding of what the whole BB/SB kerfluffle was actually about. They just saw it was taunting.

The rabid SC fans who are posting the most content online seem unhinged. I know they make up an inconsequential fraction of the SC fanbase and alums, but it's a bad look for their brand. I guess it means more down there, or whatever.

I still cannot grasp the histrionics over defensive substitutions, nor any excuse-making here and elsewhere for said histrionics. No, Brett/Aaron were not "pushing it" or "bending the rules" or whatever ridiculous cope the SC fans have used. Beamer's offensive plan ALL SEASON, and for this game, included late offensive substitutions for this exact reason, to catch the defense in a personnel mismatch. It typically worked, and the staff obviously planned for that. The entire point of the substitution rule is to allow the defense to counter-substitute. Ironically, it was Beamer who was manipulating this rule beyond its intent. He was deliberately making late substitutions, and other defenses fell for it. Brett didn't let him get away with it, and Beamer threw a hissy fit.

"But they weren't running off the field fast enough." No, our defense is not required to run max effort wind-sprints when the offense intentionally substitutes with 10 seconds on your game clock. Our players ran on to and off of the field with pace. Manage your own f#$%^ing game clock. Want to run an uptempo offense? Then you don't get to make late substitutions to gain a personnel advantage. JHC, why is this even a debate?

Many SC fans and their defenders have accused Brett of "gamesmanship," whatever that means. Yeah. No sh-it. It's a game. There's usually a great deal of gamesmanship involved, including personnel substitutions. There's usually a lot less whining, though.

The Illini's win over the low beam beamerites was so satisfying for me as it came when I really needed any sort of pick me up on New Years Eve.........The added drama of BB playing chess with beamer's mind showed how much BB is a thinker to get all angles in favor of the Illini.......the dense coach of our opponent bit on the bait provided by BB in a truly embarrassing way and looked like a crazy man in need of a strait jacket.....all the while BB had a devious smile which told me BB knew he had him hook , line and sinker.......

BB doesn't miss anything evidenced by his using a tackle eligible player and having the ref announce it over and over in games this to point out a game that we lost because the other team didn't do what they were supposed to do.....seems like the game in question was last year but BB doesn't miss a thing and it was hilarious to me to see him do it this year....

we have the best combination of intelligent coaches for WBB , MBB and FB in my lifetime right now.........JMHO..............

Started my chemo treatments last week. So far, it's really kicking my butt. Looking forward to the destination, but the journey looks like it could be a rough one. Get well soon!
I'm having my fourth (and last) chemo treatment on Monday (lung cancer @a never smoker.)
Mine were spaced 3 weeks apart and the first 7-10 days were rough after each treatment. But I force myself to eat and walk 6-7000 steps a day and by day 10, I'm almost back to "normal."
Today is day18 and I'm golfing this afternoon (live in Florida!) Still get tired but nap when I need to. Got up at 2:00am and rewatched the Ill/Oreg game last night and it pepped me up!
Stay positive, work at being healthy, and believe in the power of prayer. It will get you through...
Write if you need encouragement.
P,S, wife is just recovering from uterine cancer. Doctors declared her cancer-free. There is HOPE!
Go Illini!

Their entire mindset is based on the presumption of SEC football dominance, which is drummed into them constantly by their program, their opponents, and the TV network they watch. Of course, SEC superiority in the CFP era has nothing whatsoever to do with South Carolina. It's always been them boasting about the achievements of the teams that crush them on an annual basis.

They nourished themselves through all those 5-7 seasons on the ESPN-backed assurance that in any other conference, they'd be 8-4 or 9-3, just a rung below the elite programs (in our case, OSU, PSU, Michigan). Finally(!), a year comes where though they're not invited to the party, they're in the conversation. They get put into a bowl, not with a B1G blue-blood like Michigan, but a program for which they have no regard, or even awareness. They never for a moment anticipated that they could lose this game. Opt-outs? Who cares? Throw 11 guys on the field with SEC patches on their jersey and watch a traditional B1G bottom-dweller melt away. This was their (one?) shot to prove that they were always much more than what their records said they were.

When they realized that we were outplaying them, it wasn't a disappointing end to what was a fine season for their program. It was the harsh realization that all those years when they finished ninth in the SEC, the fact that Alabama or Georgia beat the hell out of Ohio State or whoever didn't make them any better than whoever finished ninth in the B1G. That's what was on the faces of their players. That's what brought Beamer to incoherent rage on the sideline. That's why most of their fans online refuse in any way to deal with what actually occurred between the lines but are obsessed with what, at worst, would be a mild tease using an innocuous officiating signal (though I know it wasn't that).

Everyone loses games, but SC lost the narrative they've been clinging to for decades. That's why their brains have short-circuited.

Best wishes to you

I'll share this , but I dont do it for any other reason than to let you know my deal.

Im 63. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis exactly one year ago. It came on totally out of the blue, just like cancer does. My body is fighting itself

Ive been taking 25 mg of methotrexate (old fashioned chemo) every Friday since. Luckily for me, its not a dosage as high as cancer patients get, but it still ruins my Friday night and Sat morning. I take it Friday so I'm ok for work during the week . I could be on this stuff for quite awhile , as there is no cure for RA. The chemo simply mitigates the inflammation to the point where I can tolerate the discomfort from it. It sucks, but it wont kill me. There are experimental RA drugs, but at 4000 a month, I cant do that . No sure thing either

No one ever told me life would be easy. Ill be okay. Everyone has a cross to bear
