was there any correlation between down & distance and when SC attempted these late subs ?

ie , did they try to get a call when it was 3rd & 4 or 3rd & 3 ?
We didn't keep track of that in the booth. Crap, should have thought of that. But we didn't think the slow walk defensive subs were going to be a story line. Beamer made many surprise story lines out of this game.

I just thought of this angle today . maybe he was hoping for a delay of game or 12 man or offsides on a down it really mattered .

you know better than me - lots of times coaches spend a whole gsme setting stuff up for later when it matters

Best wishes to you

I'll share this , but I dont do it for any other reason than to let you know my deal.

Im 63. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis exactly one year ago. It came on totally out of the blue, just like cancer does. My body is fighting itself

Ive been taking 25 mg of methotrexate (old fashioned chemo) every Friday since. Luckily for me, its not a dosage as high as cancer patients get, but it still ruins my Friday night and Sat morning. I take it Friday so I'm ok for work during the week . I could be on this stuff for quite awhile , as there is no cure for RA. The chemo simply mitigates the inflammation to the point where I can tolerate the discomfort from it. It sucks, but it wont kill me. There are experimental RA drugs, but at 4000 a month, I cant do that . No sure thing either

No one ever told me life would be easy. Ill be okay. Everyone has a cross to bear
My daughter was diagnosed at 16 with RA. She took Metho as well for a little over 18 months if I remember right. And it took a toll on her. I can’t imagine the toll at 63 brother. But it helped her. And I hope it helps you too 🙏🙏🙏 I’m not sure about age, but there’s so much aid out there for RA. We utilized it. Most insurances and grants have autoimmune deficiencies bylines that actually help. Probably telling you something you already know, just trying to help 🙏🔷🔶

LMAO this is the best thing I've seen in the days following
I’m actually surprised that so many on there are generally agreeing with my personal opinion on this, that Beamer’s conduct and behavior negatively affects his judgment and is a distraction to his team. I don’t follow Twitter at all, but the general vibe of the Gamecock fans on The Athletic is that they are sanctifying Beamer and are exhibiting his smugness toward anyone daring to disagree.

Denial of the problem ensures it will continue. They’ve earned the handicap by embracing it as part of their culture. Personally, I appreciate Bret’s more analytic approach, even if it’s less emotionally entertaining.

Coach Stepp taking abuse from Carolina fans on twitter. Especially with his recruiting.

Yeah, and a lot of the hyper-reactive ones think he didn’t go far enough: [click to enlarge]

The satisfaction and opposing team vitriol/frustration stemming from losing to Illinois is so satisfying. I can think of experiences for Illinois fans feeling like SoCar fans have felt, but it feels nice for the shoe to be on the other foot. Feels like the reverse of '22 Michigan, '08 Missouri games.

Their entire mindset is based on the presumption of SEC football dominance, which is drummed into them constantly by their program, their opponents, and the TV network they watch. Of course, SEC superiority in the CFP era has nothing whatsoever to do with South Carolina. It's always been them boasting about the achievements of the teams that crush them on an annual basis.

They nourished themselves through all those 5-7 seasons on the ESPN-backed assurance that in any other conference, they'd be 8-4 or 9-3, just a rung below the elite programs (in our case, OSU, PSU, Michigan). Finally(!), a year comes where though they're not invited to the party, they're in the conversation. They get put into a bowl, not with a B1G blue-blood like Michigan, but a program for which they have no regard, or even awareness. They never for a moment anticipated that they could lose this game. Opt-outs? Who cares? Throw 11 guys on the field with SEC patches on their jersey and watch a traditional B1G bottom-dweller melt away. This was their (one?) shot to prove that they were always much more than what their records said they were.

When they realized that we were outplaying them, it wasn't a disappointing end to what was a fine season for their program. It was the harsh realization that all those years when they finished ninth in the SEC, the fact that Alabama or Georgia beat the hell out of Ohio State or whoever didn't make them any better than whoever finished ninth in the B1G. That's what was on the faces of their players. That's what brought Beamer to incoherent rage on the sideline. That's why most of their fans online refuse in any way to deal with what actually occurred between the lines but are obsessed with what, at worst, would be a mild tease using an innocuous officiating signal (though I know it wasn't that).

Everyone loses games, but SC lost the narrative they've been clinging to for decades. That's why their brains have short-circuited.
Great Job Reaction GIF

I have no respect for those who can't see the gaping holes in their own understanding of a situation.

So, it is the writer's understanding that Illinois was spontaneously subbing in and out defensive players late in the play clock when South Carolina was on offense and the refs were allowing that to happen due purely to incompetence? Really? Zero awareness of what was happening with his own team's substitutions throughout the game and the relationship between the two? Try again, man. If your understanding of a situation doesn't make any sense, take another look and figure out what you missed the first time.
