Illinois 24, Nebraska 13 Postgame

So the atmosphere last night where my seats are was WAY better than it usually is. I had four Nebraska fans in front of us that were hilarious the whole game, really got in to the stadium antics and atmosphere, and stood the whole time. The people behind me stood the whole time too. This was great because I like to stand during games.

My MIL and FIL however mentioned they couldn’t see. My wife crabbed about this today on our drive back home.

So, here’s my question: what is the appropriate amount of “oh sorry, I’ll sit” and “sorry, maybe people who can’t stand as well shouldn’t come to games”?

I understand that the latter sounds insensitive, but I’d also argue forcing me to sit, while not viewed as insensitive, follows the same logic: why should my enjoyment be hampered by yours?

I am not an unreasonable person, and I DO see the side of people that want to (have to) sit all game, but I’m not going to sit more than necessary just because.

So, what do we consider an appropriate amount of standing? Or do we follow a “tough 💩 ” stance? I never want to go back to the mid-2010s era when Illinois was terrible, but man… not having to deal with packed stadiums did have some benefits.
It’s sort of a cultural thing for each team. Ours has too often resembled a funeral. Compare the atmospheres at a symphony to a high energy concert, two very different cultures with different behavioral norms.

With success, both on field and in crowd engagement, standing will become more our norm. Seeing the enthusiasm up close on our huge new scoreboard encourages more standing and participation. Maybe that was part of the strategy behind the investment? It seems to be working. I enjoyed watching last night’s crowd more than ever. It’s the sort of thing that will attract students to come and to stay. We NEED that!

At this point in our transition, I’d stand w/o apologies. This will encourage others to join the party, taking us past a tipping point in crowd energy. It’s also a very effective way to support your team, with a significant impact on the game. It’s one of the main reasons to go to the game rather than watching on a screen at home. Participating vs watching!

Some folks will be disappointed or even frustrated enough to stop coming. They’ll be replaced by others drawn to a fired-up atmosphere. We need more of the latter. The former can add to TV viewership.

It's a good discussion point. To have a great home atmosphere that opposing teams don't like there needs to large amounts of cheering, yelling and hollering. And yes a lot of standing in critical or exciting moments. I'm handicapped and so am sensitive to people with mobility issues that can't get up and down constantly. I admit I don't know where the happy medium is.
There’s wonderful handicapped seating in the West Balcony. Best seats in the house, with concessions only a few feet away and sheltered from rain too.

I heard someone say a while ago on this board (apologies to the person who did say it, as it’s a GREAT reference and I’d love to give appropriate credit to who said it) that Bret is a great football ops guy. He earned his chops on the defensive side of the ball, but his attention to detail and ability to effectively analyze how things work in a football program is extremely impressive. Things like this show his level of attention to the details of how things work. I’d actually love to pick his brain one day about this to learn more about how I could apply what he does with operations and details to my own job.
no doubt he is personally responsible for a lot of it , but more so he hires and surrounds himself with people - coaches and assistants - who are also very involved in it as well

I was there in CU with the wife since Thurs and just got home. Great wins both Thursday and Friday night. It was great to win that game last night and im estatic about 4 in a row and that we made a change at DC. What really stings though is if we hadnt hired Houck at all I honestly think we would be 8 -1 right now. Oh what could've been. That said I am still happy Brett made that change and we are going bowling! Watching Minnesota vs UCLA now and getting fired up about that game on Friday night on prime time TVfrom my couch! Good to see our team on national TV more and more in Hoops and Football!

WHAT IF ILLINOIS had beaten both Duke and Purdue (very winable games)???? We would have been 9-1
and rated around 10th in the country!!!! The recent success has me looking back at the regrets!

Nevertheless, better late than never!!!!!

It really does speak to the 3-3-5 starting to have the intended effect.

Swarming, confusing to play against, really hard to generate space east-west, it frustrates offensive schemes built to stretch and misdirect stout interiors.

(That said, unlike Oregon, Nebby weren't that bad offensively last night, they just kept making critical mistakes.)

Maybe it was just me, but last night really felt like a return to Aaron Henry bend but don’t break style. I wonder if that was a specific game plan for Nebraska with the idea they’d likely shoot themselves in the foot if we kept things in front. Certainly worked.
