Illinois 30, Toledo 28 Postgame

Toledo also had two fumbles that bounced there way- could have been a total different game if they bounced Illinois way

Well, I'm not a football savant by anyone's definition, but there is a very obvious answer to questions about that game for me.

A pro style set with two TE's and even an average B1G offensive line would absolutely destroy that Toledo team.

All you have to do is keep that QB off the field and they are done.

We handed them time of possession and penalties.

I don't really understand our play calling on offense. They stopped the run because we spread out with Luke in the shotgun every play.

The first drive and the last drive proved that if we had committed to the run we would have dominated that game.
Execute that same hurry up with two backs and an occasional QB run (pretty successful when Luke ran on purpose) and a couple IW trickeration runs....Toledo is completely out of gas by mid second quarter.

Still patiently waiting on the promised BB Bully Ball.

But hey, the weather was amazing, my first game since Juice, bowling alley pizza special pre game, Luke is for realz, and my Apple Watch heart rate monitor told me I was practically doing a HIIT workout in the second half.

And Danville won the game? Lol.

Also, I was in the corner of the shoe and we were standing a lot. 🤷‍♂️ :illinois: :ms:

Well that's good to hear. It might've only been the middle 3 or so sections, or at least the bottom half of those sections that never stood, as that's where our season tickets are. Even so, the crowd is a lot more full and into the game than it was just a few years ago, and hopefully it continues to get better as the Illini get better.

Why did we go away from the tight end so early? If you remember the first play against Wyoming was the same play to Luke Ford. Would love to see more throws to the tight end. We have got to use them more in our offense.
Keep in mind: we are under a lot more pressure to open up the playbook these first few weeks because of the level of competition, but it is necessary to keep a good amount saved for upcoming games. KU already has the advantage of basically an extra day of rest plus not losing a day to travel, so having extra plays to use is one advantage we can maintain.

I agree with you, though. It’d be nice to get close to an Iowa level on TE usage, as that would really put pressure on opposing defenses with the other weapons we have.

Great response. Our first down chant is known to be annoying. And for good reason. Hearing it 28 times will do that to anyone.

Oh good you're still here. Great humble brag, but you must have missed the 9 we handed you with penalties.

You are an above average MAC team with a very good running, average dual threat QB.

Also, don't come in here and pretend that Illinois fans are some nasty anomaly, like Toledo fans have never misbehaved towards visitors. It happens in every park in every sport I've ever been to.

But I get it, you came to throw shade. Average MACshade....but shade nonetheless.

Thanks for joining us. Enjoy your season. See you next time. :illinois:

Really concerned about our D.......0 sacks...limited rushing and putting pressure.....the backfield also looks to a smaller problem. If we're going to stay on top, our D has got to get much better.....just don't see the aggressiveness, pressure I'm used to at Illinois.

I ignored his shade after his first pompous shady post.........I don't like a poster going to another board throwing shade , whether someone comes here doing it or one of us goes somewhere else and does it.......nothing good ever comes out of it.....
It really really doesn't........The candles are to light his way back to the mud hens den as the light's went out for them with our last second FG ,,,,,I bet that left a mark.........it happens when you try to shadetalk above your pay grade.....It really really does.......

The holy toledo folks walking back to their cars looked rather subdued. Just an observation.

Crucial plays that really hurt us:

1) Late first half - Toledo QB scrambles on 3rd and 27, gets in FG range. Edge Zone with a ILB blitz gets rushers too far up the field and creates space for them to get in FG range. Toledo center gets away with a bit of a hold on Rosiek, but still a missed opportunity to keep it 7-3.
2) Late first half - 4th and 1, inside handoff gets stopped, Left side of the line gets their blocks down, but RG Gesky whiffs on the inside 1-tech to penetrate the backfield and Toledo LBers finish the play. Toledo gets the ball and drives down the field to take 12-7 lead.
3) Jacas roughing penalty. Secondary had perfect coverage, and defense should've gotten off the field. Felt like the moment we would've lost the game in past years

When was this?
late 90's early 2000s.

Block I got in trouble for the Michigan game in 2000. 6:30 kickoff, the usually sparsely to moderately full block was overfilled, TON of completely wasted students. The card stunts didn't have a chance, it was just 10 minutes of confetti, cards flying everywhere. After we got screwed over on the Anthony Thomas short TD where his knee was down, and the Rocky Harvey fumble where his arm was down first, some students got a little rowdy and started throwing stuff at the Michigan bench. We didn't have a night game for quite a while after that.
