I disagree. Yes, USC is a big name opponent but Illinois was ranked too. Also, if USC was top 10, maybe to 15, and Illinois was unranked, then there'd be more of an argument for the field storming.

Remember when the '85 Bears got absolutely obliterated by Dan Marinos Dolphins mid-season inexplicably? I'm hoping that the IU game was that one aberration for us. Now let's go ahead and finish out the season the way those Bears did!

People looked at me in my section like I had 3 eyes. I was jumping up and down. Felt like Lou Tepper @ MN, but so what, it was for the best.

Zero percent chance Illinois stops USC at anytime during that drive. Zero.

Illinois needed the ball last and got it. Thank GOD USC saved Bielema and Henry.
This reminds me of that Star Trek episode where the aliens spoke only in metaphors of their memorable moments in history. The bolded statement needs no explanation or translation. 😂

Watching OSU/Washington and they just said on the broadcast that it was a game to be proud of as an Illini fan. Love getting the recognition on an unrelated national broadcast.
Nessler and Danielson have both talked about the resurgence of the program and also about how much they enjoyed the Michigan game last season. Good to have them on our side.

I think is fair to look at the defense and be worried, but don’t forget that USC offense is one of the best in the country. Talent at every skill position. For the first 2 quarters, they were pretty much held in check. The adjusted in the 2nd half. That happens. We made plays and they also made plays. I think in general the plays they were making to me were just “you gotta tip the cap”. I’m not really concerned by them.

I came away more impressed with the offense than concerned about the defense. O-Line was elite. Luke was elite. Play calling and plan were great. My ONLY thing, please please PLEASE make sure Ca’Lil doesn’t lose his confidence. Kid is a total stud and I would hate for him to get in his own head and affect how he runs.

Purdue was terrible last year. There is no way those games are comparable. USC is a top 25 team with a dynamic offense. Last year Purdue was a bottom level program that everyone was boat racing but us. We played a good game to beat USC and an awful game against Purdue with both resulting in close wins.

I have to say I thought the same thing - if USC is going to score do it quickly. Altmyer and the coaches had a masterful 2 minute drill
Completely serious, but the way our line and Luke was playing, I had faith so long as he had even 30 seconds, he was going to drive us down the field and win it. He had the look of someone who wasn't going to lose this game. A lot of fans may have lost faith, but he sure didn't and neither did I.

I laughed so loud at this post and image. My brothers and I ALWAYS reference this episode when people seemingly start speaking in tongues or metaphors.

Lou Tepper and Scott Weaver at Minnesota when the Illini fell.

For anyone interested, the episode is “Darmok” from TNG.

Not to toot my own horn, but…

And we saw it with leaving us 2 minutes on the clock
Not sure that has a ton to do with coaching however. Your down 6, need a TD, and your quarterback's trying to win the game. He saw an opportunity to score (which is never guaranteed), and took it. Honestly I wouldn't mind us doing the exact same in that scenario.

So, was I the only Illinois fan cheering when USC scored coming out of the 2 min timeout?
The dumbest play of the game was throwing that pass so early. Dumb Dumb Dumb. Really dumb.

Coaches won't agree, but I'd consider letting them walk it in. I don't care how it looks, you do what gives you the best chance to win... which is UNDOUBTEDLY getting Altmyer the ball with as much time as possible.

Chance of playing it til the end on D and stopping them: AT BEST 5-10%. Chance of Luke getting you in FG range with 2 min left: 75%.

I was there in 1985 when Chris Whites FG attempt hit the cross bar and bounced back for a 6-6 (?) tie vs scUM

I don’t get the negativity in this thread. That was a hugely entertaining college football game, won by the beloved. The offense looked GREAT, and it would have been a comfortable win without the two fumbles. Defense had some good and bad moments, but c’mon, guys, USC has one of the top offenses in the nation, so of course they were going to get some. Defense should look a lot more stout against Purdue, NW, Rutgers. Go Illini.

Rutgers has a pretty impressive offense this year.

Nope I was calling for it at 5 minutes after the fumble, then cheered on the touchdown.

Though many were not pleased with my idea and likened it to Tim Beckman coaching.

Clearly some folks don't know ball.
