Illinois 42, UAB 23 Postgame

Great win. Offense basically picked up right where it left off. I'm confident that Houser will be able to fill Altmeyer's shoes.

The defense, on the other hand...they gotta shape up, man. No offense to UAB, but half this fanbase probably didn't even know they existed until tonight. Should never have been a one-score game, let alone a one-POINT game.

2 more games at home, against Duke and Southern Illinois. I wouldn't take either team lightly, since they were both pretty good last year, but I still believe we should be 3-0 heading into Columbus.

Strange for Boyd to come in for one kneel down? Seemed so to me but I don’t know.

A LOT to work on, especially on defense. But I'll give credit where credit is due to the D: there were 3 or 4 drives where it looked like UAB was gonna drive it in for a TD, but we held them to a FG in the redzone. Bend, but don't break. That's something to build on, at least.

Now, about that tackling...

Got a lot to clean up before Duke. Houser looks the part. Defense not so much.

Morris and Paris take such garbage paths to tackle a runner. Not sure we have much better, but overall, we are giving up 2 yards a carry before we make contact.

I saw someone else say it, but our best defense was holding and false starts. Lots of room to improve. I trust Bret will get it figured out, but the constant long 3rd down conversions were reminiscent of last year.

Our offense looks very good.

Not great but a lot to like on offense. Feel pretty good about my 7-5 call.
I want more than that but I always knew this was what we were likely looking at.

Beat Duke
Beat SIU
Beat Purdue
Beat MSU
Beat Maryland
Beat Northwestern

Find a way to pick off a couple of Nebraska, UCLA, and Iowa.

Win

Houser helped ease some of my concerns for the offense.
Afraid I had my hopes a little too high for the new defense. I guess they just don't teach how to wrap up and tackle anymore.
At least they have game film now to study all of the things that need fixed.

Still giving up 1st downs on 3rd and long though.

Hauck's defense seems to put players in a good position to make plays, but the players' execution with some exceptions is sorely lacking. Some major emphasis on proper tackling angles and especially WRAPPING UP the ball carrier once contact is made has to be a major point of emphasis if the Illini are to achieve the success we have come to expect over the past few years. Lots of positives on the offensive side of the ball though.
