Win is a win. AH needs to figure some things out.

Go Illini!!
He needs new players in his defensive backfield. No quick fix for that. That's an off-season fix and the fix is needed on all three levels. Who they have works decently versus the Purdue's of the world.

The Indiana playmakers and the USC playmakers had a field day. The OSU playmakers are going to go insane.

Henry is going to have the same philosophy vs OSU that he did versus USC. He understands that they're going to score, but make them take time off the clock to do it. Shorten the game, everything stays in front.

We are still down our X factor in X Scott and he is a huge part of our D. But we are forcing turnovers. ND gave up 30 to Purdue and Purdue is getting better. Our coaching isn't the issue. We need to develop and recruit more players. We lost a lot of DBs to the NFL and we need to keep adding more to replace em.
Bingo. Buddy Ryan, while he was breathing and in his prime, was only as good as the talent he's been dealt. The defense has lost a LOT on all three levels, whether that be to graduation, to the NFL, to transferring or to them just not planning out.

The man isn't a miracle worker. He needs more talent to work with.

He had 10 carries today…..but again he’s a good RB. Watch the missed doubles on the OL
Feagin is decent - just not the dude we all were hoping he’d be for us .

he’s really never had that break out game & it is likely not his fault really . he’s just not that guy that is going to be the horse for us & rips off 140 yards on 22 carries

This Illini defense is the poorest and the most pourus [holes everywhere] defense in the country. How many times did the Illini have Purdue in 3rd and long only to allow the first down. This has happened all year long. A game is never safe with these guys. I am 79 years old and I am confident if I was in a 3rd and 15 situation I could run for a first down against this defense. Over 400 yards allowed again today. No pressure on the QB. Luke and the offense will never be able to score enough points against the Buckeyes to win. The running game sucks too. Feagen is a 255 lb marshmallow that goes down if you look at him.
What in the he----l--l was going on with using all your time-outs in the 3rd quarter? Poor management by team and coaches.

No. Lmao Just no....
He's 100% right. The talent in the defensive backfield, both corners and safeties are below average. That's not even debatable. The front four gets no pass rush, which makes the situation worse.

We're playing pretty much a zone scheme because it's Henry's only option with trying to keep the other team's wideouts in front of the corners. He had to press the corners up because Purdue was dinking and dunking their way up the field and while they didn't do poorly, when they did try to get aggressive, the safeties were just awful.

The easy way to look at things to make yourself feel better is to think it's a coaching issue. The challenge is to look at reality and understand that this is a personnel issue, which is obviously much harder to fix.

We had my husband's uncle's funeral this morning and so I couldn't watch live today. I just watched the highlights and the biggest thing that stands out to me is our inability to make an open field tackle. Ridiculous for a high major team.

I'm happy we're at 5-1, but if we can't make a tackle next week, OSU will make us pay.

Okay ..without breaking the fabric of your reality...

Who is in charge of procuring defensive personnel...
Ensuring player development...
Getting into the portal and addressing depth issues in key areas.

If your 11 man defense and scheme hinges on one cornerback staying healthy?

Stop making excuses . We’ve given up over 125 points in the last 3 games. I realize we lost a stud. But lack of organization is still the issue on defense .
Stop making excuses for the players.

The lack of size, speed and athleticism is the issue.

Bielema hires quality guys. Guys he knows gets the job done. He hand picked Henry. I trust BB. On top of that, do you not think that BB is involved with the scheming on both sides of the ball?

The issue is recruiting. You can't replace NFL talent with guys that are average and expect the coordinator to perform miracles. We all saw what happened vs Indiana. This defense is not going to shut the water off on anyone. The talent just isn't there. After Indiana, all AH is trying to do is slow the offense down. He knows teams are going to score, but he wants them to take time and as many plays as possible to do it. Keep playmakers in front and hope for some mistakes. They've gotten some the last two weeks and the offense carried the game.

If Henry is the lead recruiter, then take some swings because that is where the issue lies.

That's exactly the issue. You nailed it. It's who's in charge of recruiting (HS and portal) and making sure they are bringing the type of athletes in who are capable of playing vs USC, Indiana, OSU, etc? To me, that's BB. He ultimately makes the call.

I also agree that it's not 1 guy who can bring down a defensive scheme. It's all 11. Outside of Jacas, we don't have the talent to perform at an elite level. We don't. You don't have corners who are capable of playing man in press coverage. You don't have safeties that are athletic enough to properly pick up a receiver who's been handed off by a corner in a zone scheme. Those types of players aren't on the roster.

Layer two to this is the our expectations have been risen. This defense will handle Purdue, NW, Rutgers, etc. That was our baseline. 7-5 would have been a phenomenal season. Now, we're talking about wanting 10 win seasons. That means you're pretty much running the schedule and you're going to get the best shot from teams like Indiana and OSU. These are no longer trap games to the powerhouses.

OSU is going to come in and we're going to get their best shot. Knowing that, what scheme could you or ANY defensive coordinator on the planet come up with when there's a talent differential of this magnitude?

The ONLY thing that Henry can do to keep Indiana from happening again is to continue to do what he's doing and eliminate big plays. We beat USC because of that philosophy. They were going to score, just don't do it in 45 seconds. Make them run 9, 10, 11 plays, eat up clock and shorten the game.

You'll have to ask the insiders who's truly in charge of handing out scholarships. If Henry is solely in charge of making those calls for the defense, then this is his problem. If not....as a staff they need to be better.

It’s much more than a talent issue. We have good players, we are not good with open field tackles, we get virtually no pressure on the qb, but nobody can tell me we don’t have high level D1 players. If that’s issue, then isn’t it due because of poor recruiting or talent evaluation?

I love this team, but the issues on deeper on defense than us just saying everyone else has much better talent than us.

Old Dominion only gave up 27 points to Indiana, do they have way better talent than us on defense?

Henry has been hiding everything so far in anticipation of this game. Count on it.

If we played IU again, we would not get rolled like that again. If we played them at home, it'd be a USC type of game. That was IU's biggest game of the year, it was prime time, it was a blackout or water tf they called it and after the punting miscue, the blood was immediately in the water. Rushing for 2 yards and not being able to keep the defense off the field didn't help.

It was a mess from the start and it just snowballed.

ODU was just another game on their schedule. They went through the motions. Happens to every team.

3rd year as defensive coordinator.

Averaging 40.6 PPG given up in Big Ten play.

Good or bad?

Is the personnel we have even without X ..
41 ppg bad? No it's not.
