That is my biggest takeaway! And… Scoring efficiency!
We got some breaks but made things count!
Settled only once for a FG!
We seemed to come up with needed plays when it mattered… both sides of the ball!
You bring up a good point. Just getting turnovers doesn't mean you're going to score as a result. IIRC, we scored off every turnover we got, no matter where on the field. If I'm wrong about that, somebody please correct me.

100%

Tanner Heckel's pick at the end of the game was not luck. That was skill.
Absolutely, the repeated description of Mensah's under-thrown pass as his mistake (especially by the commentators) and not emphasizing it primarily as Heckel's great play is just ridiculous. How many times have we seen a DB get hit in the numbers by a gifted errant throw and they can't bring it in. Heckel went up and absolutely stole that pass.

I fear we may miss McCray later in the year. (And for his sake, it does appear as though he will get many carries at Georgia.) Our running back room doesn’t feel as deep as other positions.
What makes it appear that McCray will get a lot of carries this year for UGA? O/U on his carries next week on the road against Tennessee? 0.5?

for sure - but a football bounces in such a fickle way - it’s why sometimes you can’t believe a guy couldn’t/didnt pick it up or smother it

The take is almost as bad and makes as much sense as the Duke students chanting overrated after the first drive of the game.
Lol, yep.
(Though I'm in the camp that thinks it NEVER makes sense to call an opponent overated: assuming you win, you just diminish the victory. God forbid you lose, cuz then you've lost to an overated team.)

And if you don't agree with that idea, then it is probably important to note that Duke looked awful in the first half against Elon.

They missed a field goal and fumbled a ball away in the first half. Then started to pull away in the third quarter.
Good point. I was a little cocky going into the game, based in part on Duke's poor first half performance v. Elon. I'll be more careful going forward.

Since I was a UIUC freshman in 2003 we've had 5 winning seasons in those 22 years (with 2 of those coming in the last 3).

Its a wild !!! and insane luxury to complain that a top 40 blowout road win wasn't stylish enough.
Tell me about it, I was a freshman in 1970 Hopkins Hall!, rough slog back then up to 2003, although Blackman was pretty good.
Mac and White were bright spots that didn't last long enough.

Hopkins 1979-1980 second floor .
1st 3rd & 4th floors had girls on west side
2nd was still all guys

I was in 263 (or maybe 267 ? ) . the first room on the inside , just west of the double doors 1/2 way down the hall on the south side

100% we forced them, but we were a tad lucky we recovered ALL of them

Robert pointed out that last year, Nebby dropped the ball 5 times, and recovered all of them .
Raiola sack fumbles back to back times (inside their own 10 IIRC) in a tie game and we recover neither. Then the very next play after the punt Luke fumbles and they recover. (then they go down miss a FG, goes to OT, we win).

Coming into the season I had some questions about the WRs but I think this group is serviceable.

Clement and Bostwick were solid additions. I don’t think either are as dynamic as Franklin/Bryant, but they are still reasonable weapons. Know how to get open and don’t drop the football.

Then Beatty looks like a guy that spent all offseason watching Mikey Dudek tape and said “I can be that guy”. Elzy hasn’t shown much but he doesn’t have too if the other guys play solid. So the WRs I like.

I like Valentine as #1 RB. Give him the ball he’s got the vision and speed the others don’t have. Feagin I don’t see much in him. A short yardage back I guess? He just runs too upright and he has slow feet.

Defense I was impressed with Heckel. But the overall defense, even with 5 takeaways, looked a lot soft. Didn’t look like a stout “3 and out” defense. Very little QB pressure, not much RB stuffs. I think this unit is going to give up a ton of yards so have to hope they hold opponents to FGs.

Does it look like a top 10 team? No. But playing mistake free football should make the floor high. 8-9 wins this group should be able to get too.
I think we still held back on D not to show IU anything in a few weeks. We played several series in a soft zone in the first half. We tightened up in the 2nd half but still refrained from running any blitz packages. I think we will see more in two weeks. Another week of trying things against Western Michigan with different personnel will help against IU. Gabe was mostly silent yesterday other than the forced fumble. I see him getting more involved as the season progresses.

At risk of being ridiculed, I have to share that my reactions was, "What a great play. But, is now when we want to show that?"

We should be favored.
Could be. I suspect it will be within 3 points either way at kickoff.

I just looked up the matchup on ESPN and sure enough it's at 61.4/38.6 in IU's favor at the moment. That will change, likely, but it's how I feel about it currently.
