Luke Altmyer when protected is legitimately as good as any QB in CFB. In this game with a clean pocket - 15/19 (two of them drops), 3 TD, 84 passing grade, and adj. completion percent of nearly 90%.

If that O-Line can reliably pass-protect, it just takes this offense to a whole new level.

You bring up a good point. Just getting turnovers doesn't mean you're going to score as a result. IIRC, we scored off every turnover we got, no matter where on the field. If I'm wrong about that, somebody please correct me.
We didn't score after Mensah's first fumble.

Any updates on Laughery and Rosiek? I don't think either returned.
Laughers tweaked his angle and it was very swollen. He was kept out as a precaution and would’ve only returned in an emergency. He’s expected back for Indiana and maybe against Western Michigan. He might be held out for that game though, also as a precaution.

I also hate seeing all the “we got lucky on the turnovers” no our guys FORCED turnovers.
I alluded to this in the game thread. The fumbled punt was luck, although one could argue the recovery wasnt. The other fumbles were caused by our tackling and actively trying to punch it out. Heckel's interception was all skill and was just incredibly beautiful too.

100% we forced them, but we were a tad lucky we recovered ALL of them

Robert pointed out that last year, Nebby dropped the ball 5 times, and recovered all of them .
It's not lucky to have a defense that is disciplined and gets multiple helmets to the ball. Can you expect this to happen every time? No, but good teams have 3 to 4 guys there to clean up a hit. It's just a sign of discipline and good coaching. Another opportunity meets preparation situation.

Every good high school program in America teaches 11 hats to the ball. If your defense is flowing to the ball and the backside guys are sprinting to the ball carrier (unlike we saw Bama doing WK1). Your chances of capitalizing on those loose balls go up exponentially.

I don't like "lucky". Disciplined teams make their own luck

Even the two players with 8 jerseys on....

Just an incredible moment of attention to detail making the difference at the margins. Just shows that even in the 3rd phase of the game --speciial teams-- we have coaches devouring film trying to glean any possible advantage they can.

Bret's program wins in the micro. We may not always have the talent advantage, but darn it ..our young men are as well coached as anyone!

I was at the game, Duke DEs and D-line were extremely tough, didn't give Luke any time. The offense and QB are good as well, with more seasoning watch out. Duke is a good team and will do well in ACC.
Duke had 10 TFL in the first half, NONE in the 2nd half... Some smart coach must have made a big adjustment at the half... and Illinois scored on every possession in the 2nd half..

Wish we would have went to the 'quick game' a bit earlier. Duke's corner backs were playing well off the ball. I would have liked to see some quick throws to the WRs and let them make a play and make someone miss.

Think we'll see more quick throws to Beatty moving forward. He's playing with such confidence right now, can't scheme up enough touches for him. That also helps slow up a pass rush

some coach/analyst inside the game likely alerted Hurd about that , but we’ll never know

doesn’t matter

what matters is he knew enough to act on it & look for it during the gsme .it very well was the biggest play of the gsme

What makes it appear that McCray will get a lot of carries this year for UGA? O/U on his carries next week on the road against Tennessee? 0.5?
I had a typo - he had one carry this weekend. Four other backs at Georgia had more. And two others had one carry. Josh - based on playing time so far - may have made a bad decision. And I imagine we could use him at some point this year.

No doubt luck favored Illinois, but at the end of the day a 26 point win is a 26 point win.

I think one of the most overlooked plays is in that second half it was 28-19, it was a 4th and long 2, and we lined up to go for it and then a Melvin Priestly false start lead to us opting to kick the FG. If you go back and look at it, there was absolutely no chance we were gonna pick that up, but instead got 3 points out of it due to a well timed penalty. Would've been an opportunity for Duke to put some major game pressure.

IMO completely do not support going for that - wasn't gimme yardage either. When you’re ahead by that margin, ALL you need is productive drives and points. More-so just the momentum game (like that Lions-49ers NFC Championship).

Momentum wise, getting those 3 points was very significant in that moment (especially compared to coming away empty).

Realistically how many teams are rotating 4 good backs. Also how many guys would want to split the carries 4 ways
That is a good question, and I’m not sure. However, a key difference with this Illini team - compared to prior teams - is depth.

We’ve had one back go down after 1.5 games already. And another freshman expected to see time is out for the season. This season should be more than 12 games - at least 13, and possibly 14 (or 15 or…).

Georgia had four backs with more than 5 carries this weekend. (McCray was not one of them.)

My point is the Illini could have used Josh this year, and he would have likely gotten many more carries at Illinois.

This isn't true. I can almost certainly remember the announcers saying 8 TFLs at halftime. And before that two #8 penalty, Laughery was tackled for a loss on that series in half 2.
OK.. I stand corrected... that's one (1)... was there another ? ESPN boxscore shows 10 TFL for Duke...
