If my grandma had wheels she'd be a wagon.
Nice one.

I'm just giving that previous discussion a little more thought; since this is the Illinois-MSU postgame thread.

In actuality, it appears Coach U. had it measured just right. As one said earlier, "Vegas got it right!" So did Coach U.

On the same note it has been discussed rightly that we got zero points in the last 5:32. But... that means we got 56 points in roughly 34 and a half minutes. If we would have continued at that pace over the course of forty minutes, we should have scored eight more points, or a total of 64.

At the same time, MSU scored only seven points in the last 6:35. That was significantly less than their average for the game had they maintained that scoring pace. 48 points in 33 and a half minutes equals 1.97 per minute. Had they kept that pace for the last six and a half minutes they should have scored 12.8 points; or 59.8 total points.

Either way... had we both scored at the same pace as the previous approximate three quarters, we still would have won 64-59.8

Bottom line is this: Point Guard Trent Frazier took just exactly as much time off the clock as necessary to make up for the misses and near misses on our shot attempts. It didn't even hurt that he missed a front end of what was potentially two free points. And... without a doubt, as a team, we had our best defensive effort in the last 6:35 of the game. IF... you take away the stellar performance in the first half, where we allowed only one point per minute for twenty points. And had we as a team continued the defensive intensity at that pace... it would have been a blow out.

You could count "lucky misses" on both sides throughout the game. It's a pointless exercise.
Not trying to argue with you, my friend. Your point--a win is a win--is valid. I was just noting that the game nearly went longer. I happen to agree with the earlier poster's opinion that, had it done so, we would have lost. Does it make a difference in the standings? No. Does it make me nervous about how we are going to fare in future games? Yes.

I get that this game scared the hell out of us. That’s basketball. That’s why we watch. Too much “if this would’ve happened. If that would’ve happened.” They didn’t happen. What did happen is Our Illini won! And they are in first place in spite of all that has actually happen. And I love it!

Well if we are without Kofi and Curbelo again vs top 10 teams in the future, I give you permission to freak out

It's all about tempo. By my very quick (and probably slightly flawed) count we had 1.13 points per possession in the first half (which is quite efficient) and 0.76 points per possession in the second (which is dreadful). The guys seemed to me to be gassed as the final ten minutes ticked down. That PPP stat for the final ten mins is probably [EDIT: definitely] much, much lower than 0.76.

This^. However, it didn't scare the hell out of me. It delighted me. Down our two best players and playing #10 who had (IIRC) all its talent available, we led for most of the middle 30 mins of the game by double digits, ran them off the court in the final 15 of the first half, and played D tenaciously enough to hang on at the end when our legs failed.

Yep. I walked home from the bar with a broad smile on my face, which had nothing to do with the burger and ales I enjoyed.

I have wondered since the game ended why we didn't see Marble jr in the second half....Maybe I missed it but I haven't had time to watch the replay to see if he did play the second half.......From what i remember he was efficient in the paint for them in the first half ....with all I have been going through I probably just didn't notice it ............................nevermind......................lol

Marble played 14 mins. 2-4 from field; 2 FTs. 6 pts and two boards. I can't recall him in the second half.

Am at the office and so unable to access my library of pedestrian GIFs to offer a feeble imitation of what you would produce.

A static starburst will have to suffice. ;)

DaMonte should just take it all the way to the rim--quit messing around with off-balance fade-aways, strange sloppy hook shots, and i[[-advised passes. If he gets blocked, so what?
I kind of have a very different opinion. First off, I'm a big DMW fan. The one thing he does on offense I don't get is he often passes up good but not great shot opportunities and then drives it. It rarely seems to work out. Honestly, if he just took the shot and made it at a 25% clip we'd probably be better off then when he drives it after passing up a shot. At this point defenses appear to know if you run out at him he's going to abandon the shot and drive, so they're ready for that. Honestly the only complaint I have.

“You take out 21 points on three plays and we’re in this football game.”
Ah, Lasagna. No thank you. Fortunately, I just had lunch and that grilled Polska Bielema with sauerkraut was juicy, tasty and filling.

Am rofling. Mad props for introducing that into the hoops thread.

Yeh, I know I'm Debbie Downer. I do generally sigh when people point to some play (or three) in the middle of a game and suggest that but for that there would have been a different result. But winning a basketball game because the other side blew a free throw with 0.2 left on the clock just doesn't leave me all that warm and fuzzy.
BashCtIllini's point that we probably won't have to face that precise situation again does help remove some of my gloom!🙂

No but holding your opponent to 55 will.
I'd like to agree that we "held" them to 55, but Sparty missed quite a few open looks from distance. The announcers referred several times to their ice cold shooting from beyond the arc. I'm just glad we won the game; I don't care how.

Many on here have been touting Frazier's game against MSU. I think he [played a good game but if Belo or CHawk had gone 2-10 from 3pt land and missed the front end of a 1 and 1 with seconds on the clock and us up by 2, some people on here would of called for them to be benched for life or considering transferring. lol

And, those people would be equally ridiculous. People cannot ever see more than pts, rebs, assists and fg%

Maybe treadmill workout. But point well taken.

I wasn't agreeing he should have his jersey hung, I was just pointing out that the last criteria seems to be very subjective. It can be taken many different ways and allows for a little gray area for hanging a jersey of a beloved player that didn't receive the accolades to have his jersey hung.
I think that last criteria was added so that they could hang Jerry Colangelo's jersey. Not sure he met any of the other criteria. Might be the same for Mannie Jackson.
