Lets Go Sport GIF by Fighting Illini Athletics

I think we’re really missing 1 more “key” offensive piece who can score at will to really feel more comfortable on that end of the floor. Too many times our offense goes stagnant when only 3 of the 4 guys you mentioned above are on the court. I think it could be Goode when he comes back, but if RJ, could find his stroke, that’d be massive. Feel for the kid… he’s been in quite the slump, but we know he’s a good shooter. Hoping that dunk today can get him going. He can be such a good basketball player and has really stepped up on the defensive side of things.

I approved of wearing the blues today and thus donned the blue Chief sweatshirt. ; ) My daughter enjoyed the game as we got to meet some other Illini fans that took a pic of us. The first half had to be one of he lower scoring games at 20-16 as each team was as cold and snowy as it was outside the Kohl Center. TSJ and Wahl both with 0 points in the first half was a surprise. Congrats to Mayer on his game-high 26 points. Bring on Nebraska!

I really want to see RJ doing more of this. Doesn't have to be a poster every time but please try to get pass his man.
I mean, he had to do some serious work to get there and then a two footed contested dunk?
That's really really tough sledding against most reasonably competent D1 competition.
And RJ made it look easy.
That swagger will turn into made jumpers very soon.

One concern on RJ is the shots don’t even look close. Not like they look good and are just rimming out.

I’d expect a regression to the mean but right now he’s lost major confidence in the shot.
Agreed. There are moments when it looks pure and muscle memory takes over because he's in the moment of just scoring the ball... and then a lot of the wide open ones where it's like he's not even focused on the rim and overly focused on his own mechanics, to pretend that I know what is actually going on. That is just my guess. Needs to get back to trusting his body and instincts. I think he's clearly close to getting there.

He did that kind of things many times last year.

He's always had the athleticism, but that play was his ability matched with some bully ball attitude.
Loved seeing that play more than any of the others this afternoon, honestly.

I think for RJ, it's his first step that gets him into trouble. When he moves or cuts immediately he can be pretty explosive, the issue is that I think he hesitates a little and it limits his ability to get by that first defender as the acceleration just isn't there. CoHawk has the same issue at times. If RJ has it in his mind to drive before the ball gets to him, I think he can reach that dynamic level. Of course hitting open threes also helps as it forces his defender to get up on him allowing for the easier blowby, but that's a story for another time, as he's currently shooting 25% on primarily wide open threes.

That was the worst half of basketball I've watched in a long time. Second half we just stopped sucking and they didn't.
Mayer and Dainja are our most consistent players. Everyone else is hit or miss, and we miss a LOT, especially from the free throw line.
I still like this team a lot but my goodness do we have holes to fill!

That was the thing about that play that surprised me. It wasn't like he shot faked one guy and got a clear lane. That was just, I'm going to put this one on your dome determination and bounce and if it takes faking, crossing you over and then dunking on your friends too, then Ok.

What repository of aggression that came from, he needs to tap into on offense, just like he's been doing on defense lately.

Great win, gutsy second half but one thing that confused and frustrated me: Dain flipping Dainja owned the paint in the first half, made it look easy. He didn't get a shot in the second half and I'm not sure they gave him 1 good entry look in the block.

We make it wayyyyy too hard on ourselves to go away from what was working and try to push through bad shooting. Thankfully, shooting came around today and Dain isn't always going to be the answer but, dang it, get him the rock when he's in a groove

I just had opportunity to watch Coache's press conference. I TURNED IT OFF IMMEDIATELY WHEN HE STATED HE LIKED EVERYONE OF RJ'S SHOTS. And used the the word, " elite" for the 10th time. If MMayer comes out of locker room without the Headband next game, I give up. And my thinking is it was probably Sencire's headband, that he found on the floor. Great story!

If you are shooting 8% from 3 and you are 6.7ft with a 40 inch vertical. Maybe to help the darn team out, you'll quit shooting those and go dunk on the other team? Just maybe!

Epps is a unique talent with his hesitation and ability to get layups on the rim with touch. His ability to do that at full speed is as good as anyone’s I’ve ever seen
Once he gets to the point of finishing those drives to the hoop, Epps will score a ton in his career.
