Illinois went on a 17-0 run that spanned 6:46. That's the longest run allowed by Houston in any game over the past eight seasons. The Cougars' scoring drought of 6:46 was the second longest by any team in this NCAA tournament. Siena had a drought of 6:47 in the second half against Duke in the first round.

The bad news is that the final score didn't show how dominating the win actually was. Cannot shoot 50% from FT's. Almost let them back in it.

The good news is those FT issues were likely from our absolutely great defense and tired legs. Great shot selection from 3's. Two freshman with double doubles......and well just about everything else. With the win we can pretend like the end of the 1st and 2nd hald didn't happen.

Win and advance. Win and advance.

Side note.....I really hope they bring back the twins, Mirk, AS, Davis.......they all look like they have a blast together.

Houston struggled all year against the top teams and Illinois absolutely played like a top team. Everyone played with so much poise and it looked like Houston's pressure barely even phased them.
They hadn't seen a team of our size all season. I think that's been a problem for a lot of teams facing B1G teams. We just gotta control the boards and run iowa off the three point line and we will be in Indy!

An ugly win is still a win.

That was a thing of absolute beauty. Sensational sensational play. We out-toughed them, we outhustled them, we outrebounded them, we outdefended them, and we flat out outplayed them. And I'll tell you what, if this was the game where we struggled with inbounding and free throws then I'm glad this is the game we got it out of our system because we were absolutely dominant otherwise.

What an effing game. Exceptional defense, big time kill shots, and out-Houstoned Houston. Three more defensive performances like this one. Three more. Hell of a job. Hell of a game.

Also man, Carter from Sleepers gonna have to run 10 miles... Were we clutch from the line he might have needed to run a marathon betting a point a mile...

That was the type of dry spell I've seen Houston have a few times this year. They had that against Arizona a couple of times. Had it against Iowa State. I felt like if we could get one stretch like that, we had a good chance. I was happy to finally get a call right in this tournament.

That looked like a rugby scrum at times, which is what Houston does. But I’ve got to give credit to the Illini. They swayed a bit toward the end of each half…but they refused to fold. In Houston’s back yard. I’ve heard the adjective “soft” a few times this season. This team is not soft.
Someone else mentioned it, but if we hit FTs at a normal rate we’d have seen AJ Redd and Petrovic on the floor at the end😂
