There were of course so many key plays in the win over Houston, but I wanted to give credit to Tomi for hitting what I thought was one of the biggest shots of the night. Houston had just hit back-to-back 3's to cut what had been an 18-point lead down to 9, 50-41, and the Cougars had intensified their defensive pressure. Kylan missed a short shot, but Keaton snagged the rebound and found Tomi open at the arc. Despite having missed his first two 3-point attempts and having been in a late-season shooting slump, Tomi did not flinch. Swish! I had started to feel like it might be slipping away, but that shot sealed it for me. The moment was not too big. You pass up a wide-open shot against a defense like Houston's and there is no guarantee you're going to get as good a shot later in the possession.

I was sick to my stomach at halftime when Bruce Pearl was criticizing Illinois’ multiple-foul strategy right before the half. It’s bad enough to hear that man’s voice, but it’s even worse when I agree with him. 🤢🤮
That sanctimonious POS. Challenges my Christian duty to not hate
Satan - just go back into your hole and STFU

Ugly win but a great win. I don't understand poor free throw shooting that let Houston hang around. The Illini finally played some defense. Great gutsy effort by all but our 2 freshman are just fantastic [hope they both come back-PAY THEM WELL] Rest up, Iowa is playing over their heads right now-Be ready. We need to shoot the ball better but I love that coach has changed up offense by getting to the basket. We need Andrej in the lineup that kid has a nose for the basket! Opponents continue to beat up Keaton. Let's stay healthy and beat Iowa!

Didn't realize what Mirk and Keaton did last night by making history. Only two freshmen since freshmen could play. Double double 53 years. Congratulations to both players.

You guys … I’m thankful for each and everyone of you … Frustrated post games … Recruiting … The carousel … Nit Picking at things we could be better at …

These are the moments … I am enjoying it and I hope you are as well …

It's all good! We can't get complacent.

For me, it's justified to nitpick at times. You want an Elite team. Great programs do this, that's why they're great.

When they come through, though, it's time to give all credit where it's due.

Keep being you!

GIMME DAT Elite 8 appearance, Kelvin Sampson.

Special shout out to those of us who never lost faith in this team/season being special.

Special shout out to those of us who never lost faith in Andrej Stojakovic.

Looks like we saved the best defense for last. Looks like this team has learned to have answers for lots of critical moments. Looks like, after two decades, Illini Nation can dream fearlessly, once again.

LONG LIVE THE ILLINI!

This glory. Is where we belong.
How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways-
65 ways for now.

I thought this play and the one early in the second half (around the 17 or 18 minute mark) where Mirk missed a corner 3 and it appeared Houston came down with the rebound, but either lost control or Wagler stripped it and put it back to put Illinois up 29-26 (and started the 17-0 run I believe) were the two biggest plays of the game. If Wagler doesn't get the ball and bucket, I feel like that could have given Houston momentum and start a run of their own.

I will say one good thing about Sampson (still don't like him one bit):

I liked how he was real enough during the game to tell his players that they did commit a foul. Namely, Tugler. It was refreshing to see as an opponent when we’re used to seeing cry baby coaches like Hurley and Izzo losing their mind about every call that goes against them.

Okay, compliment done. Don’t run me out of here.

One of the things I love about Keaton (and there are many), is that when his shot isn't falling he finds other ways to help his team win. He missed two layups in the first three minutes or the Illini might have blown the game open even earlier. It didn't faze him. He ends up with 12 rebounds, including stripping the ball away on that big play. He had just one turnover -- One! -- against that Houston pressure, and that turnover was not a live ball runout, it was an offensive foul that could have been called the other way. We may never see another one like him come our way in my lifetime. On the other hand, Morillo...doesn't hurt to dream!
