I felt Morez should've played more.
In 2nd half, unfortunately had to take him out while we were in the bonus (after he missed front end of a one-and-one), and Illini not into double-bonus until much much later.

And before then Ivisic gets tired and starts missing bunnies at the end.

Strange game overall.............Oakland's D caused problems , but we went away from what was working with Tomi in the middle of the paint for easy buckets........

KJ had a rough game but maybe cause his parents were here watching in person had something to do with that..........His no look pass to Tomi was beautiful...................

Boswell played great D the whole game..........His hands are lightening quick as a magician............

Tomi with a great game on O but his D still needs work..............Led with 20 points tonight...............

DGL is electric........He brings a spark every game............7 pts tonight...............

Big Ben H. with 10 pts & 6 rebs.....His D just keeps getting better every game..............

Riley with 8 pts and White with 7..................

BU post game radio......................

KB was tremendous on D..
held their 3 point shots to 4-25.............
18 turnovers is way too many............
ugly win , but it's a win...........................

It emphasizes Brad's comments to the team about how you win when shots aren't falling. You have to find other ways and dig in defensively. We still have work to do, but you can see they understand how important that end of the court is which is hopefully promising they will continue to get better.
From Brad's post game interview I get the sense he likes that to play Oakland or opponents like Oakland that like to slow it down and make it ugly after a couple of cupcakes to start the season. Also likes to do it before a big time opponent, last year Marquette and this year Bama. I know he doesn't make the schedule but I think he likes seeing an opponent like that early on.

Not sure why DGL is not getting more time, 3-4, 1-2 from 3, 2 steals and 3 ORB in 12 min. He also had 2 turnovers which isn't ideal but possibly more time gets him settled down more? I just like his energy he brings in when he's playing.

Who thinks we have the better Ivisic brother at this point? Tomislav has been a life saver for this team so far. Nice to see Boswell playing well defensively and getting a couple shots down as well
I haven't watched every game Z has played in but I've yet to watch a game and be impressed by him.

Tomislav looks bigger, more like a real center, and even a better shooter. Z doesn't even look that much more mobile.

Thoughts:

1. Learning game, ugly, but I don't think there was any doubt who the better team was. That zone is boring, and frustrating, and slow, and stupid, and nauseating.

2. I'm slowly having a few issues with Tre White. Lazy at times, defense comes and go's. I need to see consistent hustle. It seems like he plays with this "cool" swag all the time. I don't care. Play hard, be a leader and take initiative.

3. We made a ton of "Freshman" errors. This will get better with time. But it's easy to forget how young these guys are. They need time on the floor together.

4. A few guys to mmention. Kylan was obviously alot better, I like him being more aggressive. Tomi is gonna be so valuable. Missed some bunnies but when we gets going he's gonna be great. DGL continues to play great on ball defense.

5. In full honesty, without orange colored glasses, we are prolly not ready for Alabama. But I'm ready to take the test and see what they got. Nothing to loose.
Good takes. Your point #2 about Tre White has been one of my bigger takeaways as well. He's going to have some great games for us this season, just like he did last game. But his lack of consistency when it comes to defensive effort is noticeable. Players like Will and Ben are getting burned at times but you can see them trying hard out there. Tre has the talent to be a plus defender and he showed several sparks of that at USC as a freshman and in his last game for us against EIU, but in his time at Louisville, he would take games off on that end of the court.

The hope was a change of scenery and coaching might get him back on the path his freshman year and high school talent suggested, very similar to the flier we took on Guerrier last year. It's early in the season and there's still a ton of time, but I do think this is something that we need to keep an eye on as I do see some warning signs here.

Fact is a tenacious Tre defensively makes us a much much much better team. He needs to find that level game in and game out.

A few oblique points to ponder...

-3 p shooting teams are supposed to be zone busters...
-assist total should indicate offensive effectiveness...
-what is the lowest "floater" shooting percentage in a game by an illini team?

Thought this was a great game for Brad. He used quite a few lineups, saw how guys handled the pressure. This is a very young team, the youngest illlini team I can recall. Boswell is only 19 and will be for the whole season. Will, Tomi, & KJ are so good for being freshman (essentially). Guys like Ben and Tre bring some experience and I’m sure coach likes them out there for that reason. But as we move forward, the team goes as the freshman go.

Somehow, in a way, I was pleased to see KJ and Will have thier freshman mistakes tonight. It’ll get worked on for the next week in the prep for Alabama. They’ll step up.

I thought with Ty leaving that Booth would see more time. It's not working out that way.

Depth now at the historical mean.
It's year 8. Not sure why anyone should expect things to change. Underwood plays a 7-8 man rotation.

Fans, not shockingly, usually look at players with fans eyes. People were excited about Jake Davis and expecting him to bring the same shooting he had at Mercer to Illinois, completely ignoring the huge jump in competition. That was never going to happen. There's a huge thread on Ty and how people loved his hustle, but they ignored that with him, it's essentially 4 on 5 on the offensive side.

With Booth specifically, he's a 6'10" 3 pt shooter. His problem is, he's not very good at it. 61.5% of his shots at Notre Dame were 3s, and he hit 29.7%. So far in his very young career at Illinois, 90% of his shots are 3s, and he's hit 22%. If you're a 6'10" athletic guy who just stands around taking 3s and making at a very low rate, you don't have a place in my rotation. To me, he either needs to develop an inside or slashing to the basket game, or greatly improve his shooting if he wants to see the court.

We're still in the early part of the season where guys are getting minutes, but I could easily see the rotation for Big Ten play being Boswell, White, Riley, Humrichous, Ivisic, KJ, Morez, and DGL getting 10-15 mins. That is what history tells us of an Underwood rotation.

Road test vs good veteran team? ✅
Two cupcakes to work on offense? ✅
Team that runs zone primarily to get it on tape? ✅
Seems like Underwood knows what he's doing with scheduling early trats. I didn't like what I was seeing too often, but now it's on film and we can fix it in practice.

On the "zone busters" idea, that works best against sagging zones and especially a traditional 2-3 zone, but Oakland played an amoeba zone (which starts in a 1-3-1, and morphs to a 2-3 zone, late in the shot clock). Oakland did a great job matching up with our shooters and point guard, so the main opening was for the center of our zone offense (Ivisic and, interestingly, KJ, in part of the 2nd half). So, it looked like our best shots were at the central position or driving, to penetrate the zone, and generate shots from that.

I'm afraid this game showed that several Illini players (KB, KJ, and even WR) were not as ready to drive past aggressive perimeter defenders and get good 2s or FTs or kick-out 3s as they need to be for Bama and tough games after that. (KJ did play well in the center on offense, but that was because he had a slow Oakland center trying to guard him). Underwood mentioned in the postgame that they will be working driving until defenders stop them and reducing TOs later this week.

Booth is likely the odd man out but could get spot minutes if the bigs get in foul trouble.

Though I'd rather have Ty than Tre to be honest. It's not playing 4 on 5 when you're that good on the offensive glass.

For those of us still learning the team, who is BAM and why?
Per an answer on here in a different thread to same question, he was called Bam Bam as a kid. Don’t know why that nickname then, but maybe cuz he was built like a fireplug like Bam Bam Rubble from Flintstones.

Last night was first game I’ve seen since Ole Miss exhibition. Feel about the same way as I did after that exhibition — definite talent on team, but right now more a solid team than a deep-tourney-run team. Lot of work to do. Illini will win a fair amount of games on talent alone, but definitely need improvement to turn that into “a lot of games.”

I still feel good about the team and prospects for success, but much less worried about why we aren’t ranked in week 2 than I am about team development. Very interested in seeing how we look against Alabama. Will be a great barometer.
