Illinois 69, Indiana 60 Postgame

All time UI vs IU games

UI--89 wins
IU--93 wins

About as close as an almost 200 game rivalry can get.
It was just a few years ago (2015 86 -86) when the all time record vs. IU was tied and, at that time, the only Big Ten team we had a losing record against was Purdue.

I watched Deron play HS ball his Jr and Sr year and Texas was loaded with talented players throughout the state. Deron was the third best player on his team in The Colony. Bracey Wright was an AA and went to IU and Bam Harmon went on to Rhode Island. Their Jr year they made the Final Four but lost to Daniel Ewing's and TJ Ford's Sugar Land Willowridge's in the Semi's. Bracey grabbed all the headlines while Deron ran Tommy Thomas's fast paced offense. It is hard to compare Deron to AC because both played under two different styles. Deron's abilities to do the things AC can do were hampered by Weber and his plodding offensive scheme.

Not trying to pick a fight, but Deron did pretty well in Weber's system, and Weber not only praised him for how well he ran his system, but went so far as to say Deron had the keys to the team and he trusted him completely out on the floor. I recall one postgame where he said Deron was like having a coach on the floor, which was a rare luxury.

Weber had a lot of trouble coaching his scheme and motivating his players as time went, but I'm not sure I get what you're saying about being hampered, or a plodding offense, when Deron was here.

I am saying that Deron did not have the complete freedom to play his game under Weber. Our talent on the 04-05 team won in spite of Weber. My point is that Deron would love BU's offense. I think his numbers would be Ayo like if BU was coaching the 04-05 team

Miller will be fine. No comparison to Smith IMO in that Ace plays defense even if he is missing shots. Much higher BB IQ than Smith.
Coach obviously knows what Miller is capable of. He is just a little off on his shot right now. Once he gets back in the grove and hits a couple of 3's he will be fine and important part of the attack.

BU will have to turn this offense over to Curbelo soon, it’s been several games now where we are awful on offense until he takes the floor- we can’t afford these slow starts against good teams. It also takes some pressure off Ayo to create everything himself, which we ran into that against Missouri

I would also love to see more of Giorgi and Kofi on the floor at the same time- that lineup is when we pulled away. Giorgi is such a good passer it opens things up for Kofi
We need to get a few serviceable minutes from Hamlin if we are to play Giorgi and Kofi together a lot.

That's the nice thing about Curbelo. He makes these backup centers (Hamlin and Lieb) servicable.

I suppose it’s unfashionable to say anything complimentary about Weber, but I felt the offense fit those players well. Watching that team and how they meshed was a joy. I didn’t see anyone being held back. I saw a team that meshed perfectly.

When BU's team ads not in transition their half court offense looks identical to the BW teams

A lot of comments about Miller being all right down the road. If we're going to be a final four team we need him to turn around his game this year.
He just needs to hit a few shots and he’ll be clicking again. He needs to play for that to happen. And for us to make the final four, we need some great perimeter threats to open lanes for Ayo and create space for Kofi. DMW will probably cool down a bit, but if Miller heats up that is A-OK.

He may be struggling of late, but on the bright side, the team has been amazing in it's ability to overcome 1 or 2 guys having an off night. No easy thing with this schedule. I'm optimistic he'll figure things out and start seeing how he can contribute more effectively.

Better defense in this game, particularly without fouling. Offense was unable to produce much success until Ayo got going mid second half. However, the team continues it's relative dominance of the B1G through 4 games by per possession statistics:

Wisconsin is still exceptionally good, Iowa took a hit from a bad game but they have a very small sample size so far. NW has been legitimately good through 3 games, and MSU has been legitimately bad, which is weird after the start to the season they've had.

Illinois still #7 overall by Ken Pomeroy's adjusted efficiency, 3rd in the B1G behind Wisconsin and Iowa, but now project to a better B1G finish than all but Wisconsin. Interestingly enough, despite the small starting sample, Northwestern is projected to finish with a better record (10-10) than MSU (9-11).

I guess Indiana may have found its bulletin board material for our rematch on Feb 2.

In his postgame presser, when asked to account for his offensive outburst in the second half, Ayo made some statements about playing "mind games" with IU and how their bigs got "lazy" late in the game. I expect he will draw some additional attention in Bloomington. Should be an intense game.

If Underwood didn't want Grandison shooting. wide open corner 3s, I don't think he'd be on the court. He didn't have a bad game.
He didn't have a good game. After being an early sub he got little tick thereafter. I wish him all the best, he is an Illini for life. I hope he makes better decisions and continues to improve. He has shown a bit of promise and good attitude...now growth is needed. Leadership and staying within his limits.

Maybe he needs to loosen up by getting some more mid-range shots to fall...it seems like he’s just shooting more threes. He’s got screeners to open him up, and a great passer to find him in Curbel.

I think he is just fighting his own instincts at the moment. He is trying to fit in. It been a while since his role on a team was to fit in. His best attribute is his ability to score. When you have been 1st or second scoring option your whole life, it's difficult to just go into a mode where you are 3rd or 4th option. In the first couple B1G games he tried to be himself early, but missed some jumpers, had a couple shots blocked at the rim, and maybe the victim of some no calls through contact. Perhaps he sensed it was better for the team to stop forcing things and let the game come to him. (It probably was) Unfortunately, that isn't really who he is and it seems to have gotten in his head a bit.
He seems like a confident young man. I assume his performance in the last couple of games is just a bump in the road. He is too talented to stay down for long.

He should play it even safer and start with dunks ;)
