Re: Rodgers = Dennis Rodman

Hopefully Ty only mimics Rodman from a basketball perspective.
Back in the day, I had the opportunity to meet several of the Bulls including Cartwright, Pippen, Jordan, and Rodman. Two things stood out about Rodman. The man had the largest fingers I've ever seen. You felt like a child when he shook your hand. The other was he was as weird as F--ck. If he wasn't a rebounding machine on my favorite pro team, I would have made a point to walk on the other side of the street when I saw him coming.

I said before the season started that Rodgers "kind of reminded me", from what little I saw of him of Nick Anderson at this stage of their respective careers. I still stand by that.
I agree, Ty reminds me of Nick Anderson. Just Nick didn't play freshmen year. Ty needs to develop the shot Nick had.

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois was in a tight home contest against No. 24 Rutgers, and then it ripped the game away in the second half.
Coleman Hawkins’ dominant beginning of the second half helped the team to a runaway 69-60 home win on Saturday.
Hawkins finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Dain Dainja added 15 points and seven rebounds.

It was a tough gutsy win today and great to pull that one out. But I hope I'm not the only one concerned when they threw the press on the Illini, there was trouble. Iowa employed it also and it hurt. Other teams will be watching film and scouting. Team needs to work on this I hope.
When you beat the press and have a Three on two or two on one, Don't pull a Bobby Knight and pull the ball out and set up your great half court offence
( we Don't have one). The best way to stop a team from full court pressing is to make easy shots every time down and not turn it over.

Unfortunately I don’t think Illinois has the ball handlers to then attack a 3 on 2. That speeds Illinois up and likely results in more turnovers. I guess what does it matter if you are turning it over on the press anyway but my 2 cents

We need Hawkins to be offense minded like today every game .
That means shorter 3ptrs. and more 8-12’ footers. He’s not good with the ball in transition. Needs to give it up and get in a passing lane for a dunk.

But seriously though, anyone know what happened to the “You got Krush’d” chants? I’m gonna assume they were forced to stop doing it after Hunter Dickinson’s parents complained that it hurt his feelings

There are plenty of other rules he could have violated than the smoking one. And I don’t think it was 💨
RJ was dressed. I remember Ayo being suspended for a game for being late to a practice and he was dressed also. When Ted was suspended, I don’t think he dressed. Is that accurate?

Rodman was at his best under Chuck Daly. He was a mentor to him. He was so much more stable, disciplined, and dependable…and WAY less 🦇 💩 crazy than in later years.

Has anyone seen Steve Pikiell's post game interview? I haven't, but I always like to hear what the opposing coaches have to say about us after the game.

For the insiders it seemed like RJ was in good spirits so hopefully it is learn the lesson and you are good

Will RJ be back next game?

From a previous post of mine this is what I meant about CoHawk being more aggressive on offense. We don’t win this game without his offensive aggressiveness. If we can clean up lazy lackadaisical passes We can be pretty good.
Having recognized that Hawkins virtually never (actually only very seldom) took a shot from the paint early last year, it is blatantly apparent that he put scoring in the paint at the bottom of his focus....which is absurd for a guy with his size and skill. He simply has to score when given the opportunity in order for this team to win!!!! In the past two games, he has been aggressive at taking the shots offered, especially the easy ones. Not looking for him to become a selfish scorer as that is not in his blood. But as a team first guy, he must understand he needs to shoot the 10 ft. jumper and in because no one is guarding him when he is 10 ft. away. Last year, there were a handful of times every game where he would be unguarded while dribbling and moving to the hoop. He could stop and pop from 8-10 ft. on almost every possession. Yet, he would get to the rim and put up a weak effort that got swatted or missed badly. I love the jump hook and the tear drop runners that other teams seem to make 80% against the Illini. Those are easy shots %wise that Hawk can make as often as anyone. Simply, he needs to score and not try to make highlight reel passes.

That we have seen that happen in the past two games is a very positive improvement for this team. It will allow them to avoid scoring droughts and lead to more opportunity for the entire team. TSJ can do the same as he can score easily when he takes his time in the paint....and he does not need to run past everyone in order to do just that.

Bottom line is that a major weakness in this team, the lack of willingness to shoot open shots or take high % shots inside 12 ft seems to have been addressed in a positive way and is a must. It is an easy fix but has a dramatic effect on the ceiling for this team going forward. I really respect the talent and unselfishness CoHawk possesses and have from the git go, especially his defense, but it seems to me that he impacts the game in so many ways with unselfish play that he does not fully understand that this is basketball and the team who scores the most points wins. Not saying he needs to score 20 per game, but he must take every opportunity if the high % shots offered so the team does not have to force low % shots as the clock runs out.

We have an exceptional talent in Coleman Hawkins who is involved and working hard on every play at both ends.....and the Illini program is lucky to have him. But taking advantage of his scoring opportunities is a must for future success....and that future is getting pretty close.

Hmm, knowing 0440 like I do, I wonder if that is that a visual code for crop dusting?

Can see how that's offensive to the team but harsh to sit out a game (though depends on the dosage in ppm)

I don't understand what's with our program in that if someone is struggling and has their role reduced, it's always something. How do these programs like Purdue get these dudes that just completely buy in even when they struggle and have to go to the bench? First, Skyy Clark quits the team and now Melendez is getting suspended.

A player’s role is reduced BECAUSE of ‘something’. Otherwise their role would not be reduced from what it was.

A coach has two prime directives. In no particular order, his role is to win games... and to develop and mentor young men to be better players and people.

No coach is going to do anything to hurt his chances to win a game unless there is a greater purpose in trying to reach someone to serve some positive end.

And these days with the Portal... a coach knows that if he gets ‘too hard’ on a player then he risks that player leaving the program. But no good coach would let that stand in the way of doing the right thing in the moment for both the program and the young man.

And there are always ‘personal reasons’. When a young person has some ailment that is not publicly known or just doesn’t feel right to be the game. And that should stay between coach and the player.

Bottom line is you have faith in the coach that he knows his players and he knows what’s best for all concerned in making any given decision.

And has been discussed in the past with players who left the Illini... if that person feels he is a better fit elsewhere then it’s for him and the program that he move on.

With recruiting and player development and program-fits there are going to be hits and misses. This is the human factor. Always unpredictable and changing from moment to moment. Just set a sound course for the program and let things shake out as they may.

That is the Larger Game above the game on the court.

A player’s role is reduced BECAUSE of ‘something’. Otherwise their role would not be reduced from what it was.
I know it's a bit of a chicken and egg, but I think a general cause and effect is probably something like "Skyy Clark begins the year as Starter -> doesn't play well -> Jayden Epps plays better -> Team goes through a slump -> Coach says "ok, we're gonna start playing Epps more and Skyy less" -> Skyy says "well screw that, I'm out" and quits

In this case the "something" that reduces his role isn't anything negative about a person's character, just that they aren't playing well enough to win games. The "something" for me, is choosing to quit the team mid-season.

For what it's worth, I have nothing against players that transfer after the season ends (like Podz) when they are good teammates throughout their time here even when their role is not what they were likely hoping for.

I am hoping this one game suspension with Melendez is not a case of "something" and that he understands and accepted the punishment for whatever transgression he committed. I hope he is ready to come back and be a contributing member of the team in whatever role the staff has in mind for him for the remainder of the season because I do think he is still a useful player (his defense this season has been good, and I prefer him out there in a late game situation icing a game with free throws to Rodgers/Harris who need some work to get their free throws more consistently)

Just finished the game on Tivo delay. Excellent win, and the 19-0 run didn't hurt. Keeps us as a really solid 5-6 seed in the Big Dance for the time being.

ILL !!!!!!!

(And good luck to the maintenance crew in getting State Farm ready for tomorrow's Super Bowl!!!!!!)
Tivo?
