My comic relief moment of the game (comic since we won) was Dain somehow thinking he could channel his inner TSJ and go coast to coast with a rebound, including a behind the back and spin move. Pure gold.
Was watching with my son and we were screaming "What the "#@$&", Dain!", then my son said. " can you imagine if he brought that coast to coast.....it would have brought the roof down."

I just don’t think the in-game announcers can ignore what’s happening in front of them when they call a game, especially when they see him live for the first time. The national studio hosts have always been biased towards the conferences they came out of themselves (typically towards ACC/Big East), but the blackballing bias against TSJ is just glaringly obvious. During game recap, Seth Davis was saying Illinois’ size could give Connecticut problems and you could see other hosts put their head down, literally writhing in their seats and staying silent. Lying cheat Bruce Pearl was the worst (SEC trash). SportsCenter didn’t even cover the game or mention Illinois, but spent over five minutes on Carolina, who lost! ESPN just wrote about the upcoming IL/CT matchup, again using half of the coverage to unnecessarily insert the “rape” accusation to smear TSJ without facts or context. Edit- Seth Greenberg on ESPN this morning: “Illinois can’t guard Connecticut”. Just like ISU was going to dismantle our offense, right? Just like the narrative that our defense is awful and we couldn’t defend ISU? Just keep proving them all wrong, boys and shock the basketball world.
Every since I got rid of cable and Direct TV I have not watched ESPN regularly for years
Use to watch Mike and Mike religiously
The quality of programming on ESPN and the basketball analysts has really gone downhill
It is of little surprise their profits plunged 20% to $1.48 billion through the first nine months of fiscal 2023. :) :) :)

Can’t like this enough!

Reviewing this thread, I saw some complaints about the officiating. Personally, I thought this was an extremely well-officiated game in the big picture. It was a very, very difficult game to manage because of Illinois' athleticism and Iowa State's aggressiveness on defense. I will grant that the Hawkins charge was not a good call, but in a 40 minute game at that level officials will make mistakes as well.

I said this to my son when it was a 3 point game with about 3 minutes left of so. I can't be criticized for only saying I thought the officiating was good because Illinois won. I would personally have no problem with the same crew working tomorrow, but I know that won't be the case since I'm sure there will be a completely different set of three officials working the game tomorrow from either game last night.

100%

One egregiously bad call, but they did not let ISU get away with mugging us. WE let them get away with it at the free throw line, but alas.

The game was like a European soccer match with the way the Cyclones flop on defense and they often got the call rewarding that garbage. Then, the most legitimate defensive play of the game with Coleman taking the full hit for an obvious charge with beautiful positioning is called a block. As a longtime former zebra, I almost threw my beer through the TV screen I was so outraged. That was an absolutely terrible call by the ref involved.
Coleman played beautiful all around basketball last night. The follow-up play to TSJ's late steal for the dunk where Coleman came flying through the air out of nowhere and got his hands on the inbounds pass, just missing out on the steal and ending up in the seats is a play that I could not believe was not commented on by the announcers covering the game. If he makes that steal, the game is over.
Hopefully, his all around game is attracting more attention to him by NBA scouts. He deserves to be rewarded for his selfless team play and leadership of this amazing ILLINI team. Thank you Coleman!
I agree with your sentiments. I'm not a real expert at basketball to explain certain details, but, having played a lot of sports and coached, I kind of know what I'm watching during a game. I don't know about the flopping, but the continuous bumping is what caught my attention. I don't know if it should be called or not, but it certainly seemed more by ISU, than I usulaly see, the entire game. I'm not complaining. Regarding Coleman, everything you said went through my mind as well.

I am so glad to see others reinforcing what I have been seeing all thru the Illini's 3 games. Kenny Williams -everything is North Carolina, Charles Barkley-Everything is Auburn and SEC and so on. I thought the remarks about TJ'S off court issues were off color and totally irrelevant to the game! I hope the Illini cram it down all their throats then refuses to talk to any of them after.
Simple solution: Don't watch the postgame shows on TRU/TBS/TNT/CBS.

I turned immediately over to BTN after the game ended, and the coverage was all about Illini in a positive way. Why do so many of us care about what the national media/talking heads think?

Titus opened his show talking about Illinois and seemingly has spent 20% of his on-air time pumping up the Illini over the last five years (RIP Titus and Tate).

Sleepers just put out a 35 minute video recap of last night’s game and have never hidden their love for the team and Brad specifically.

Field of 68 guys were great last night! (I don’t watch them often) Goodman straight picked Illinois to beat UCant.

All of these are on YouTube and most of it is on Spotify most likely.

Illinois is getting some great coverage out there. If you’re unhappy with media with more of a corporate responsibility than you can find alternatives. Or you can piss and moan.

This is a great take. I have always tried to ignore the comments of most national broadcasters. I always shrugged my shoulders at the bias cries. The good ones come through with their delivery and comments. But, you are pointing out things that are difficult to ignore. You would hope that people that are considered journalists would not have biases. But, we all know that is not true.

With the exception of Pearl, I generally like the TBS studio crew, esp Jay Wright's insightful comments and Seth Davis gushing about us.

Jay Wright, in my opinion, is outstanding. He's what we'd want an analyst to be both in the studio and during games. He focuses on the game at hand, isn't afraid to admit when he's wrong or hasn't thought of something another analyst brings up, and generally stays away from hot takes. Plus, he has the demeanor and presentation that Bob Knight (who was also just focused on dealing with the game at hand) obviously never had.

You can't both say that the press is being unfair when they complain about TSJ refusing to do any media appearances and also complain that the coverage surrounding the games is unfairly ignoring him.

There's a reasonable argument to be made that the Douglas County (KS) State's Attorney has been horribly unfair to TSJ. That will be addressed through the proper channels in due course.

But GIVEN what the Kansas DA decided and the legal jeopardy TSJ is under, everything that has happened since from a basketball perspective is so miraculously lucky (for TSJ, but especially us fans) that I spend every day marveling at it. It is UNBELIEVABLE that we are here after where we were when the charges came out. This was an impossible outcome, full stop.

And I go back to what I've always said through all the basketball and fandom darkness we've all been through the past decade-plus: we, the Illini fanbase, deserve this good fortune, we've earned it.

But don't look a gift horse too closely in the mouth, y'know? The public narrative has been UNIMAGINABLY hands-off about all this.
I wholeheartedly agree. Maybe I missing something, but I have assumed TSJ has avoided the media to avoid letting nothing turn into something. I'm happy. I assume he's happy. We'll see.

I said to my wife, "What was he thinking?"

It reminded me of a d-lineman intercepting a pass and trying to return it for a touchdown only to fumble after 5 yards. The steal on the play though was in itself crazy.

Thanks for the kick in the teeth Jack.
