Illinois 73, Iowa 61 Postgame

As even the insiders have said, it's almost impossible to predict what these players are going to do in this new transfer portal world.
Dain's increase in minutes and inspired play is very similar to Coleman in 2022 and RJ last year, who both struggled early on before becoming key players by the end of the year.

Coleman stayed and became an all-time Illini legend while RJ left and is now a solid contributor on a below average Georgia team. We'll have to see what path Dain chooses, but I'm happy he's having success for our sake and his own.

I would like to think that Dain is a smart enough fellow that he realizes the amount of NIL $$ that will be available after TSJ , Cohawk , QG and Harmon leave his year.....From almost all the accounts I read Dain is bought in on working with Fletch still and that there should be more tick next year.......myself , I hope he stays and has a breakout year next year , as in B$G accolades....at least HM....

I didn't include Doc Domask in the departing group above as it's been posted that the odds on a waiver for him to play next year for the Illini are getting better each day........I hope so.....I really really do......................
I can see a scenario where the offense flows through Dain (and Amani), looking somewhat like the Kofi years. I hope we have some outside shooters.

I am thinking the extra playing time Dain is getting is an attempt to encourage him stick around instead of transferring. The roster make up will be so much different next year, perhaps we'll have some guards than can get him the ball effectively.
I doubt coach is going to play a guy in the hope that it discourages him from transferring. The focus is completely on winning the game at hand.

Of course if you have a 20-pt lead late in the game, that's a different thing.

Just getting to highlights since I missed the game for work!

Nobody talking about this absolute gem from CoHawk at the 1:00 mark of first half!!

This dude...
Great play, but my favorite Coleman moment in this game was late in the 2nd half when he swatted a sure layup right to another Illini player, pretty much cementing the victory.

Edit: oops

beat me to it.

Brad is not very good about giving charity minutes to bench players.

1. It appears that NET ranking still take margin of victory into account (although they claim they stopped doing it) so Brad does not let up on the accellerator at end of game.

2. Brad says you earn minutes in practice so if you are in his dog house he is not going to play you regardless of score.

3. In 2nd half of b10 play we have not had any major blowout wins. So less charity minutes.

Dain and Moretti are earning their time. Justin is important to our team and we have struggled when he does not shoot well. JMO I would play him less based on last 2 games.

thought the interior D was much better. didn't think the transition D was good to be honest, thought Iowa got a ton of open 3s in transition and we were fortunate they missed a lot of them. we deserve that after opponents have gone off against us all season long, but I don't think the actual D was THAT different despite what the score said
I think going over screens works better on unathletic guards like Iowa (Perkins Dix) and Purdue (Smith Loyer), but not guys like Bouie, Young and Walker. With the later, you might run them off the three point line but you are a step behind them and they can get to the rim. Think we need to keep the switch everything defense in the back pocket for the tourney when we might run into some quick guards that can get to the rim. Go over the screen on Shedd and I think he would make you pay.

Part of defense is we score quickly so we give up more points. But I like our defense vs. Iowa and Purdue. Not so much vs. Minnesotaa and Penn State.
I think we are improving. Terrance definitely shut down Perkins (Iowa), Christie in 2nd half (MN) and Storr (WI) 4-12

We held Iowa to 61 points. They were averaging 83 points per game. --- (-22)
We gave up 77 point to Purdue. They average 84 ppg. ---- (-5)
----
We gave up 83 points to WI. They average 74 ppg --- +9
We gave up 97 points to Minnesota. They are averaging 76 points per game. ---+23
We gave up 90 point to Penn State. They are averaging 75 points per game. ---+15
We gave up 80 points to MD. They average 70 ppg ---+10
We gave up 68 points to MI. They average 73--- (-5)
We guve up 88 to MSU. They average 73 ---(+15)
We gave up 84 to Nebraska. They average 77 --- (+7)

Unfortunately, Ohio St/Iowa will both likely be Q2. Neutral court Q1 is NET top 50. Ohio St is currently 60 and Iowa is currently 58.

In the next round, Nebraska would be Q1 (NET 40), but Indiana/Penn St would be Q2.

And the final game against Purdue wouldn’t count towards seeding.

Not sure if one more Q1 win (best case) is enough to propel us to a 3 seed without some serious help.
Thanks for breaking this down!

Since I wrote that, Ohio St is up to 54 in NET. So if they beat Iowa by double digits, there’s actually a chance they could sneak into a Q1 game.

What I’m unsure of is how the committee handles a team at 51 NET (Q2) and a team at 50 NET (Q1).

How deep does the committee look at each individual win? That I’m unsure of.

Well, if that's the criteria, I hope Brad never has an opportunity to win the award.
Even looking at just the last 5 years of the award, it's obviously untrue that the team has to improve significantly from the year before for the coach to win. Brad got screwed in 21, just like the team did. But the other years, he's been near, but probably not at the very top. It seems to be a complex award in college due to the coach being the coach and GM at the same time. I think voters sometimes have difficulty deciding how much the coach's work as GM should factor into who wins.

Getting 9-10 minutes vs 5 minutes won’t influence dain’s decision. NIL $ will be the final factor along with coaches end of year meeting

I agree with you about Nico. He brings an element we don't have. I want him to play more. I can't help worrying he'll enter the portal if he doesn't get more PT. As the starting point guard next year he could be huge.
Nico isn't going to be our starting PG next year. I'm guessing he'll likely be 3rd on the depth charts

"I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" Nick Saban

TSJ, Quincy, Domask, Hawkins, and Harmon all gone
7 players potentially returning including Sincere
3 Freshman (Morez, Jase and Jackson)
3 upperclassmen from the portal potentially
It will be interesting to see what transpires,

Could see this happening for sure!! A 5th year veteran transfer/ Jase / Nico I will trust the insiders that keep talking about Jase. To me, Nico is good and serviceable , but limited. I hope I am wrong, because that just frees up another scholarship to use at another position.

And for that matter we've played the whole season without a PG and been very successful. Underwood may want to continue that scheme again.
